"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 208 Recap: “Something New”

Cut to a seamstress shop where Nora is wearing her old wedding dress and telling the seamstress she wants to dye it midnight blue (hides the armpit stains), and maybe raise the hemline. Is it me, or was this dress actually more flattering on Kitty?

Cut to the Hollywood Bowl at night. A band is rehearsing on the stage and McAllister is giving Kitty a tour — ostensibly because he wants to use the venue for an upcoming fundraiser.

Kitty: Are you kidding? This place is huge. There aren’t that many Republicans in LA.

McAllister drags her out onto the stage where she recognizes Lyle Lovett, who appears to be friends with the Senator. Very cool. So, Lyle Lovett is a Republican? Either that, or he’s got a new album he’s desperate to plug.

The Senator apologizes to Kitty and tells her he knows they don’t have a particular song.

McAllister: But whenever I hear a song that’s even remotely romantic I think of you.

McAllister asks Kitty to dance, and as the two sashay around the Hollywood Bowl’s stage Lyle Lovett launches into the first single from his new album, “available on iTunes and from fine music retailers everywhere!”

So, just my two cents but I really loved this episode. Loved the stuff with Scotty and Kevin, which came as a pleasant surprise. I even liked the stuff with Kitty, Sarah and Rebecca. And we had just the right amount of Senator McAllister — meaning basically he just stood around and looked pretty.

What did you think of the episode? And perhaps more importantly, what do you think of Kevin and Scotty getting back together?

The lobster bibs rocked! :)

Yay! for more Kevin and Scott love. And the bibs were an especially cute touch. Too bad they didn't show more of the kiss. It's no coincidence that Kevin's arm partially obscured the ongoing lip-lock.

Nice recap, btw, though I disagree with you about the opening scene. This is "Brothers & Sisters" - not life and death stuff like a medical show. Most issues they deal with should NOT be major crises. I thought the exchange between sibs/mom about the songs they lost their virginity to was well-written and very funny.

Thank god for those bibs!

Thank god for those bibs! They made the scene even more cuter and enjoyable to watch! :)

A few comments

I think what Kevin meant was he'd tried to change himself for Jason, and he wanted to go back to his real self. Remember at the beginning of this season when he was going to church and praying? Were you bothered by the way they had Kevin's elbow block most of his kiss with Scotty? It really annoyed me. It seems like the few kisses they have had this season have been very obscured.

Ha! Wang!

"That one’s always game to go in front of a camera. Just a hunch, but I think Vera Wang would trade her entire design empire for a small recurring role on The Bold & the Beautiful." Seriously, that line made my whole evening! So true....

We all need a little Scotty in our lives

And that's the Truth.

Lobster bibs

I understood the lobster bibs to be a symbol of the myth created on "Friends" when Phoebe stated lobsters mate for life. Since Scotty and Kevin are perfect for each other, I thought the symbolism was really great.

Hey Bridc - That's a really

Hey Bridc - That's a really interesting theory. Makes sense to me, the lobster thing seemed a bit pointed, didn't it?

Lobster

Even though Ariel's friend, Sebastian, is a crab, not a lobster, I can see why they chose lobsters instead because of the allusion/homage to what Phoebe said in that "Friends" episode that when a lobster chooses a mate, they mate for life. Those lobster bibs really show how true that sentiment really is between Kevin & Scotty.

Good show but...

Shouldn't Kitty already know her "song"? If it's the song she first had sex with the Senator to, she knows it. If it is the song that is her and McAllister's "song" she knows that, too. So this is just a contrievance to get everyone to talk about their first time. And OMG, not Chevy Chase! ugh, yech, gag etc. The whole story line of having Kevin be faithful to a missing missionary was a way to de-sex the character anyway. Glad that guy is out of the picture (of course he could show up at his brother's wedding to totally mess up Kevins decision) As I recall Scotty broke up with Kevin because he was semi-closeted, very unhappy with being gay and embarrassed by Scotty's more open messy life. The last two episodes Saul, Tommy and Justin have all severely critisized Kevin for being the "unhappiest" guy they know (this while he is supposedly in a committed monagamous relationship). So Yay for Scotty, one night stand Marines, any Tom, Dick and Harry he runs across.Let this 36 year old lawyer have a period of openness, sex and freedom before they tie him down again.

I have nothing against

I have nothing against Scotty but I'm a Kevin/Jason shipper so this was a sad episode for me! LOL. Like I've always said, if Kevin had to break up with Jason, I'd rather have him with a new guy or atleast with Chad. Here's hoping that Kevin apologises of Jason and they hook up again.

You said: "You know, I think

You said: "You know, I think I figured out the central problem with this show. Most episodes the stakes just aren’t high enough. With a show like Grey’s Anatomy or ER you always have people coming in and dying on the main characters. So it’s a life or death situation every week. But here on Brothers & Sisters we’re limited to more mundane crises. I mean, choosing a wedding song and finding a mother of the bride dress? Seriously. What do they have planned for sweeps? Tommy gets a plantar’s wart?" Is life more like Grey's or Brothers? Life is mostly about the mundane, like choosing a wedding dress and even getting rid of plantar's warts. The way the writers of this show handle the mundane can be uneven at times but I don't find a problem in the attempt to do so. Life isn't filled with drama and, when it is, our drama is usually self-made. I'm pretty sick of Grey's, to tell you the truth. Week after week, they throw another obstacle at Meredith. How many obstacles can one person encounter? It's no wonder she prefered death to McDreamy.
