"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 306 Recap: “Bakersfield”McCallister Ranch. Kitty answers the phone, and it’s Robert finally returning her call. He’s obviously prepared for her to bitch away some more at him while he holds the phone away from his head and makes the “she so crazy” gesture to his colleagues. Instead, he’s no doubt surprised by the warm response he gets from her, as she tells him the happy news about having been picked by a birthmother. She says, “We’re going to have a baby in three months!” and I just keep groaning away about how ill-advised thinking like that is. Then she says, “I’m really happy!” Yikes! Again with the tempting T.V. fate talk. Just go pick out his tombstone already, why don’t you?
Stately Walker Manor. Nora opens the door, and by George … it’s George! As in George Lafferty. He says he was up all night wondering what would make a seemingly non-sadistic person like Nora drive all that way to make accusations about his dead wife. He figures there must be more to her story. When she tells him the affair took place 22 years ago, he figures out immediately that this is actually about his son, a.k.a. he-who-is-often-named-but-must-not-be-seen: Ryan.
End of episode. I’ll give it a B–. Of course, major points
off for no Scotty. But other stuff was pretty well-handled, especially the
Kevin/Tommy bout and the confrontation with George Lafferty. While I’m not so
keen on the Internet dweeb duo so far, I’ve been complaining for so long about
Sarah needing to get away from Ojai and get a decent story of her own that I can’t
penalize them for actually taking the show in that direction. Not yet anyway.

I gave it a "D"
Granted, I was put off right from the start by the (torturous) extended Justin/Rebecca/bathrobe scene. Am I alone in finding those two more tedious and unwatchable with each new episode?
The rest of the sub-plots were also a yawn. Factor in a complete absence of Scotty and I really just couldn't get interested.
Except when George was onscreen. "Edible" doesn't even begin to describe the man. What can I say? He's very much a mature muffin.
However, if this all continues I should be completely over B&S within 2-3 weeks.
A Liza Minnelli PILLOW?
Third time's the charms
I Thought....
.... the thing about the pillow was so ridiculously stereotypical as to be offensive. Overall, I gave the episode a C. I guess I don't subtract points if Scotty is there or not simply because in the context of the show I wouldn't expect to see him every episode. It's the fate of a Walker spouse. Heck, the show struggles to squeeze non-Walker Robert in every episode and I suspect they have no choice but to do that with him.
Oh and the guy who played George was pretty cute.
The Pillow
Are you kidding? I would kill for a pillow like that.
No, that may be hyperbolic of me. Let me think on it a sec...
Yes. Yes, I would kill for a pillow like that. (and I don't feel stereotypical)
What is so wrong with a musical theater fan owning a LIZA
pillow?
Kevin doesn't need to be coded gay. He's OUT!
I think what's so funny about the pillow is that in most ways, Kevin is very traditionally male but he clearly loves that pillow (despite how unlikely a thing it might seem to be for him to have in his house) which is why I think folks make such a point of it (Holly, Jason, etc).
I think the pillow is cute and I think it's cute that Kevin (who is a very masculine man) is comfortable enough with himself and in his skin to not be so worried all the time about what's "stereotypically gay" and what isn't.
He loves to cook and decorate and he loves theatre but no, you wouldn't necessarily know any of that by looking at him (if you were thinking in stereotypes) and I think THAT is what makes him more realistic.
It's like folks expect him to be chopping wood and chewing tobacco and smacking beer cans on his head or he's stereotypical.
How bout a happy medium?
Liza-Pillow
That pillow just belongs in Kevin/Scotty's place, just like the other 10 thousand little things, such as the books no one probably ever reads, but are just there to be decorative.
I dislike Justecca more and more, but I figured out that that is probably due to the fact, that their presence only emphasizes that they can be shown intimately together and Kevin/Scotty cannot.
I think the episode wasn't bad, but it added nothing much either. It seems to be one of those 'in between' episodes.
There's a real start up to the Ryan story, some cracks in the perfect Robert/Kitty relationship, Tommy/Kevin is not solved (despite the faking), Sarah is getting back in charge. Just curious where it will lead.
Sadly: No Scotty, he might have added some spice to the episode, but I doubt it.
Best of all: No Holly.
Bitches Anonymous
Nora Remembers
I literally clapped out loud when Nora angrily reminded Kitty how inappropriate Robert's attack on her a few weeks back was, and how no one jumped to her defense.
Thank god SOMEONE on that writing staff is paying attention!
Couger Alert?
I thought the same thing.
I was almost ready to give
I was almost ready to give this episode a D, maybe F, but then I saw the previews for next week and wouldn't you know it Senator Prettyboy is having and affair!! So it makes up for the ho-humness of this episode just a little bit. Although I will give points to the prospect of seeing Sarah take a note from Brenda on SFU and slut it up for us with those two hipster nerds.
Oh, and there should be nothing anonymous about being a bitch as every queen here knows how good it feels to be one.
Trope
Definitely a D
Pretty much a dud episode for me. Contrived fights. No Scotty. And this internet startup plot would have been eye-rolling craptastic in 1998 -- but 2008?! Come on, writers. Do like 2 hours of research on start-ups and funding in this horrible economic moment we find ourselves in...
Now, George Lafferty. Totally yum! More of him, please!
And the pillow is great propping. It's one of the so-bad-it's-good conversation starters that you keep out because it's expensive and horrible. And clearly Kevin knows its expensive but can't seem to get rid of it or stash it in the guest bedroom.(Jonathan Adler needlepoint pillows run $150 to $200. And the Liza/"Disco Diva" pillow hasn't been available for more than a year.) And didn't he try to hide it before someone (Chad?) came over?
Craptastic Internet Startups
It just goes to show how really lazy the writers are - just as no temp agency in California would threaten to 'fire' a temp for refusing an assignment -- they wouldn't even imply it over a food company with little, if any need, for clerical help -- two dudes in a crappy apartment would never make it pass the vetting a recruiter would do for a placement agency. Sell his truck? Selling his truck, even if it were a Hummer, would barely pay the commission an agency would request for the placement of an MBA grad/former CEO. It has as much logic as a 50ish Pasadena housewife trying to start a $17M charity or that anyone would give her more than money for postage to do -- irrespective of who's wife she was.
They need to do basic routine research, learn simple logic skills, try to be more creative than rehashing their own plot contrivances (a Walker or a Walker spouse has an affair! Ojai is many millions in trouble! William Walker has an illigetimate child!). Please.
Affair?
The Baby
My hope is that the possibility of adopting a non-white baby will expose Robert's underlying racism.
Who am I kidding? The man is God, I am sure the child will turn to pure solid gold as soon as he lays hands on it.
Hmm. I detect a new meme for
