"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 308 Recap: “Going Once … Going Twice”

Cut to the house that Kevin bought. Nora pulls up in front of the derelict McMansion to find Kevin waiting for her. She says something about how it’s not enough for him to steal it out from under her, but now he’s got to gloat about it too. She certainly does know her own son.

Kevin invites her inside, and from the looks of the interior, it definitely is haunted. If you squint, you can actually see the blood dripping down the walls, as well as the door to the little room where they’re keeping Karen Black locked up. [Editor's note: Plus the television is showing an endless episode of The View with Hasselbeck and Shepherd blabbing on and on about subjects they know nothing about.]

Kevin says the house is Nora’s if she wants it, apologizing for what happened at the auction and admitting he was acting too much like his father, which is something he never wants to do.

He offers the keys, saying he hopes she’ll take the place off his hands since it will go a long way toward helping him patch things up with Scotty. I’m hoping she’ll say no, which would then pave the way for Kevin to try to sell the place during a very special Flipping Out crossover episode. Admit it, what wouldn’t you give to see Kevin go head to head with Jeff Lewis? I’m just not sure that even a McMansion this size could contain their two egos.

Cut to McCallister Ranch. Instead of late-night infomercials, Kitty is now watching post-election news coverage. Robert comes home and takes this as a sign of improvement (although that’s debatable), asking if she’s feeling better. She says she is, although no thanks to “Operation Distract Kitty.” He says he pretty much assumed she’d figure that one out. Heh. Give him some credit for knowing full well how long secrets typically last with his in-laws.

Then he says he’s sorry for not being more understanding, and she says she’s still sorry about what happened with Trish, and I’m the one who’s sorry that even in a decent episode like this it still has to devolve into “The Apology Show,” as it does at the end of every week. But it gets better when Robert says he's "arranged" for Trish to "change her mind" and give them the baby when she gets back from her surprise visit to Guantanamo Bay.

Cut to Kevin driving around with a blind-folded Scotty beside him. Scotty’s trying to figure out what Kevin’s up to and says he thinks maybe he should have a “safe word.” Like he doesn’t have one already. And I’m guessing it’s the word “Kitty,” because if anything would get the two of them to stop having sex immediately, it’s mention of not only a family member but the one whose name is also a synonym for “p*ssy.”

Kevin says it’s funny that Scotty mentioned the word “safe.” Because he’s brought Scotty to a bank, where he proposes they now go in and open joint accounts. Scotty is clearly pleased. Kevin says, “Did I do good?” and Scotty confirms he did. Then they tell each other, “I love you,” and embrace in this really stupendous kiss, one of the best we’ve seen between them.

Significantly, this very loving kiss is unfolding right out in public. The image really resonated with me, coming as it did on the heels of the nationwide Prop 8 protesting that had taken place this past Saturday. I have to think that having a relationship like Kevin and Scotty’s portrayed in all its love and normalcy on network TV is doing something in terms of public education and acceptance.

Letter grade for this episode: A-. B&S, you “done good” this week. Now don’t screw it up.

Apology show..

Thank you Steven, for this recap! Hilarious! I couldn't hold back laughing out loud several times. Head cheese.. *lol*

I never really liked Rebecca and even with two very funny lines this episode, she is just too bland for my taste. In high contrast with the Walkers and even though they get all annoying at some point, I prefer them to boring Rebecca.. I think it's her hair too.. So late 90s..

I agree with you on the 'apology show'.. It really irks me. It is far too easy to apologies AFTER you've done something wrong, instead of not doing it in the first place (it IS possible to avoid sometimes!). I have family members who are very good at messing up big time, only to come crawling back to apologise. Too easy and very infuriating at times, because the harm is done..

Anyway, I'm happy for you and the adoption. I've met several people who have adopted and, gay or straight, it always seems like an ordeal. But the happy ending is all worth the work/wait of course.

Thanks j U d E

I'm glad you liked the recap. And appreciated your words on adoption. Through the adoption agency we ued, I've met many families like ours. And even though they vary significantly in terms of the process (in terms of timing, especially), and even though the process can be completely crazy, it all seems to work out wonderfully in the end.

I forgot Saul!

I forgot to mention Saul! WOW! He's already dating someone! Good for him! Just CANNOT wait to see the other man and the story unfold! Excellent!

I like Dave Foley, but as a boyfriend for Saul?! No no no!

This episode is awesome

This episode is awesome and I love Scotty more than ever.

Kevin was a little bitch in this episode and Nora said too much to Kevin, but it's Walkers.

Also I like the way they use same meaning lines in different moment always, such as "This conversation is not over." and "We're not finished." between Scotty & Kevin and Saul & Justin.

In addition to, finally Saul has got a caring person. That's great! I was always hoping Saul would be involved with someone, someday.

By the way, at very beginning of this episode, Scotty made a loud sound, and I think it was caused by his bag hitting some books on the cabinet, not stuff falling out of his bag.

Scotty's Occupation

Just a heads up Steven on Scotty's career. In episode 2.16, when Kevin was going through Scotty's address book, attached to the address book was a current business card of Scotty's at San Estephe. On it says that he was "Sous Chef". So, basically, yes, Scotty graduated, made it through internship, got to Sous Chef and now is head chef.

Scotty's career

Thanks for the update on Scotty's occupation. I figured I must have forgotten something. I like this direction for him and I think it would be a good direction for the show to introduce Scotty-focused storylines centered on his job, maybe even characters who he works with. Being so limited to the Walkers has made the show suffocating. It's not like Dynasty was all about the Carringtons -- they just linked the different storylines. I'd love to see Scotty grapple with an undermining sous chef, or overbearing restaurant owner.

Is it wrong that I want Dave

Is it wrong that I want Dave Foley to be in EVERY episode? He really did say all of the things I've been wanting to say during every one of these excruciating "family" dinners!

Finally!

A good episode! I have been waiting all season for one. Great recap, Steven. Great snark. Your recaps are the only saving grace for the bad episodes.

Who is making the Editor's remarks? Dennis? Michael? They are hilarious too.

Are you working on a Lena Horn (ask Dennis) type of pun?  I think every recapper must have one.

It's Michael

making the editor's comments. And I like reading them too -- almost always make me laugh.

I still don't like...

the fact that Kevin works for a Republican. Why does Kevin have to work for a Republican? If he cares so much about public service, why can't he work for a Democrat instead?

But I did love Dave Foley's appearance in the show! Dave Foley is awesome!

Kevin working for a Republican

Because Senator McHalo needs a second story-line besides being Kitty's husband in the adoption-story. And what better person then one of the most popular? Now he gets to be suprior to Kitty AND Kevin... And make me go from 'not caring about' to 'absolutely disliking' Robert.

Rob Lowe is such a storyline hog

How about more of a storyline for Scotty instead? Luke MacFarlane is so underused.

As I said before

the only comment I could think of was 'Way to go, Scotty'. As for the phrase 'swing a cat', it's one I've heard many times before, although not recently. Of course, I am a lot older.

Any Kevin & Scotty Centric Episode

Is a good one and they didn't disappoint. I have many issues with B&S but when they come through, they in fact do real good. But why hasn't anyone mentioned when Paul licked his fingers and then shook Nora's hand? I think that's where the 'look' came from. The recap was great and more Kevin & Scotty, they are the heart of the show.

And I think that Paul said that the chairs at Sarah's were "butt killers"!

Novinous's picture

Awesome episode

I liked every single thing in the episode, Dave Foley, the dialogues even better than usual, the classic conference conversation on the phone, Saul being there, Julia not being there (okay it's not fair to her, she didn't really get the chance to be interesting but even when she is there I find her boring and annoying, since the first season), Sarah and kitty's "fight" and of course Kevin and Scotty ! For once all their scenes were awesome and really well written, it seriously seemed like something changed in the writers' team... or maybe it's just Scotty's come back that makes everything better !

Loved the recap too, I always look forward to it when I finish the episode !

Conflicts with Rob Lowe?

Seems the last few episodes Robert was in scenes with Kevin and Kitty, and none of the other Walkers. He wasn't able to attend the last 2 big Walker bashes (although, who could blame him), anyone know if there is behind the scenes angst in the cast? Schedule conflicts? Seems odd?
Kong Chang's picture

This trend continues into

This trend continues into episode 3.10.  Robert is not seen with the family until the very end.  It's better that way too.  You'll see why when 3.10 rolls around.  Best episode ever...even better than 3.08.

oh and I forgot to say that

oh and I forgot to say that I think it's great that Justin and Saul are getting closer and I'm loving the scenes where we see Scotty and Kevin wearing their rings and call each other husband.

A thought for The Editor

First, Steven, let me say how much I've been doting on your recaps. And imaging Mrs. Scotty as a swingin' jazz cat made me snort something out of my nose.

Michael, I love your writing, and I love that you created this site and the mission it fulfills, and I love your columns (including your brief B&S wrap-ups the morning after)...but (and I don't have a truly diplomatic way to say this) would you please stop making comments in Steven's column? It changes the tone, it takes away from Steven's carefully constructed flow, and it feels, honestly, like an intrusion. I know someone above said they liked it, but I just have to disagree.

As a fellow writer, I appreciate your opinions (which I would love to see in your own wrap-up), but I feel very uncomfortable that it's usurping energy from what Steven is doing so beautifully.

Now don't be mad at me, and let's hug it out.

I have a different take

I am another who enjoys the editor comments in the column.  For me the flow is not damaged at all, and, in fact, the comments create a sense of...of...of...."community", for lack of a better word, or perhaps collaborative reinforcement.  I'm not really coming up with a good word, but you get the drift.

Even though I disagree, I'm still up for the hug!

Absolutely my favorite episode this season

And this season is turning into a winner as far as I am concerned. I am just so loving the way the writers are working the Kevin/Scotty storyline. I thought I loved these two characters a lot before, but now I am just head over heels crazy for them. And I agree the timing of the public kiss just days after the Prop 8 debacle was brave and appropriate. Brothers and Sisters this season is doing more for gay causes just by showing how normal gay people are. Thank you writers of B & S. Bravo!!!!!!!!

I Agree

That this was one of the best episodes and that the humor worked. And the recap was just as entertaining as the episode.

My only criticism of the show is that Scotty and Kevin's kisses have to be so short. If Justin and Rebecca kiss we get to linger but it's obvious that someone at ABC has set a rule--two men can only kiss for two seconds.

But I have to say for a major network show this was an important episode, especially to begin and end the show with the gay couple showing affection for each other.

Wow, what an improvement.

Last week I was just about ready to give up on the show and didn't bother to watch this episode when it aired. I read the recap 1st(great BTW) and just finished watching it online. It was even better than I expected, for 3 reasons IMO. 1st, it's great to see Kevin a Scotty presented as complex people not caricatures and being the focus of an episode. 2nd, Dave Foley as Paul. I hope they make him at least a semi-regular. He was a scream. I can see his characters inappropriate behavior is a cover for some deeply painful issues. I'd like to know what they might be. We know he's in N.A., but what led him there? I hope we see he and Justin develop a friendship. It would be great to see a caring friendship between a young straight guy, and a middle aged gay man portrayed on TV. But then Justin and his brothers seem to have a pretty good friendship with Uncle Saul, but he's more fatherly. Paul might bring another element to the show; fun! 3rd, the writing was really improved. The scene between Kevin and Scotty near the end rang really true. I liked Scotty's line about Kevin wanting to change the headline. The dinner was to honor Scotty's success and Kevin changed it to "I bought a huge house" thereby overshadowing Scotty again. And was Nora ever projecting! LOL.

Best in a while

I agree with all the comments above. I had almost stopped watching this show after that tired and unbelievable episode last week, but I found myself smiling through much of this one. I don't know who Dave Foley is but I thought they should somehow bring Paul on board as a regular. I guess I missed them filming Kevin/Nora's McMansion on Dallas' Swiss Avenue, right down the street from the baths. Could Kevin really be so clueless that he would be surprised that Scotty might be upset with him for buying a house without him? This series sets a new record for most narcissists on a single show.
Bountiful's picture

a little sitcomish, but still good

I thought Kevin's asshole behaviour was way out of character, despite him generally being insensitive and emotionally unaware. They had to hyperbolize his thoughtlessness, especially with Nora, because they didn't have the time to subtley build up the tension. That's the downside to having such a large cast. However, I'm glad that his mistakes were of the sort that could be fixed, unlike the dinner with Scotty's family. It was nice to see him realize his mistakes *and* be in a position to rectify them. Saul's surprise was nice. I don't think the subplot with Paul was about Saul as much as it was about Justin. Seems like Justin saw, in Paul, the sad pathetic man that he, Justin, was afraid to become. But it was nice to see that Saul has something coming up. It's important that they don't just focus on the younger characters.

SCOTTY and KEVIN UNCUT

Isn't there anyone who could "liberate" the uneditted version of the last Kevin/Scotty scene  from the  bank parking lot and share it with the masses?

Mr America is thankfully gone!

Whatever the reason Mr America is not here and that is cause to celebrate! There is a pattern here, that Mr America features in 40% screen time in the first 4 episodes of every season. Other storylines fade and reappear in the last 4 episodes of every season once Mr America is no longer doing whomever he is doing at ABC.
