"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 311 Recap: "A Father Dreams"

Tommy assures him he’ll always be “a part of her life,” and Kevin says that’s fine, just so long as he can be the “crazy uncle” who buys her tons of presents and gives her a place to crash whenever mom and dad fight. Personally, I’d rather bill myself as the “totally cool uncle” who takes her to her first rock concert, confirms her suspicions about what an ass her father is, and registers her as a Democrat just to piss him off.

Tommy, in magnanimous dick mode, allows Kevin to hold Elizabeth while he goes and helps Julia prepare a bottle. When he’s gone, Kevin tells Elizabeth he’s been thinking about her a lot lately. Then he notices that she’s drooling and tells her she’d better quit that before she gets into boys. “Or girls,” he adds. “One never knows, right?” Personally, I would love nothing more than for Tommy to have a gay daughter. It would be even more hilarious than the Cheneys.

Episode Grade: B+.

It was probably closer to a B. But I’m awarding extra points for the lack of Rebecca, Holly, and the Wunderkinds. What did you guys think? Be honest.

Psionycx's picture

Overall it was good

I just want to further emphasize something here.  Robert's poor secretary, who really should file some kind of complaint or call a newspaper, sits a mere 5 feet or so from the frosted glass door that Robert was humping Kitty against.  I hope that poor girl had vodka instead of water in that bottle!

One redeeming feature in the episode was this:

Nora: Don’t be silly. It’s nothing I haven’t seen before.
Scotty
: Well hopefully it’s nothing you’ve seen in a long time.

This is such a common mother line, and until now I have never been able to come up with quite the correct snappy response.  Thank you Scotty for resolving that long-standing issue.

Now, I don't see how anyone can think that Kevin was being a dick in this episode when Tommy was reaching a whole new plane of dickiness.  If that idiot wanted an anonymous sperm donor who would never threaten his manhood by revealing that he shoots blanks and couldn't biologically father his daughter then he should have stuck with the sperm bank!  He was the one that insisted on having Kevin's manjuice (grudgingly accepting Justin's as well to allay any sibling rivalry). There is no way in Hell the No-Secrets-Walker clan will ever be able to keep this one quiet, even if Kevin keeps his mouth shut.

What kills me though is that the writers didn't really try very hard to make Tommy out to be the selfish jerk that he is.  Instead they wrote Kevin signing the papers! This was so totally about Tommy and his male inadequacy issues and yet they make him look all wounded and vulnerable.  So Kevin should pity him and agree to his wishes.

After Tommy's already come back to Kevin once looking for spare parts for his daughter!

The fact that Kevin forked over a chunk of his liver (which God knows he needs the way he drinks) along with his spunk and signed that damn paper (doubtless drawn up by the lawyer Tommy and Holly hired to replace Kevin) just to satisfy Tommy's insecurity issues totally kills any argument anyone can ever make that Kevin is "self-centered" in my opinion.

But other than the mistreatment of Kevin and the easy-out given to Tommy it was actually an okay episode.

For starters, there was no Rebecca and no Holly.  Always a plus.

Also, I don't think Scotty really was a victim.  He was actually being as sassy with Nora as one would expect a good Southern boy to be given that he was in her home. They do have manners down there.  Even Scotty's bitch of a mother never manages to be more than frosty when she's expressing her displeasure. I wouldn't expect him to have a catfight with Nora.  It just satisfies me that in the end he flat-out said to her that Kevin is his husband and he should be the one doing the caring for him.

Kevin running out, leaving Scotty behind is actually not as much of a diss as one might think. I suspect that he realized that Scotty would probably make enough of a fuss about him moving that he knew it would be impossible to escape Nora unnoticed if he included Scotty on the escape plan.  Once he was safely alone with Scotty at the hotel, with no Nora or siblings in sight he was more open.  In particular the discussion about having kids was particularly sweet.

Now, if only we could actually see Kevin and Scotty do what Kevin and Julia did in the dream. I swear, B&S is getting like Obama's Inauguration.  We're there, but clearly as second-class citizens only.

Thanks for another great recap!

Psionycx, your comments are fun and interesting to read.  You obviously put a lot of time and thought into them!  :  )

Agreed.

Thank you, Psionycx, that was a great comment to read. I agree on all points. I've become a bit weary of coming here because lately I feel Kevin's being seen as the biggest ass on the planet - as opposed to Scotty ever the victim - and the scapegoat for all things bad on this show.

I feel the writers have missed out on a great opportunity when they let Kevin sign the papers like that. A proper conversation between those him and Tommyirl would've been nice.

It really offended me that

It really offended me that not only Tommy, but Sarah and Justin got up and walked out on Kevin the minute he said he wanted to talk about Elizabeth. Kevin donated his sperm, against his better judgment, after the family pressured him into helping Tommy. He agreed to major surgery without hesitation to save the child he never wanted to father, and he's the bad guy for having feelings about the whole thing?!? And what has Tommy done for Kevin? Oh, yeah, he FIRED him. Tommy IS a total dick. Overall, I thought it was a good episode. I like Scotty more and more and think the character is maturing realistically. And I thought the line about making the Nora apology CD was great! I enjoyed the absence of Rebecca, too. One of my great fears is that Justin and Rebecca will procreate and their child will be oh so pretty, but have the IQ of an artificial plant.

There is a new rumor about Hollywood...

I smell fresh Emmy material for Brothers & Sisters matriarch Sally Field. According to sources, Balthazar Getty, who plays the Oscar winner's eldest son, was informed last week that producers were not planning on picking up his option as a full-time series regular next season. However, that doesn't mean that Tommy's place setting at the Walker dinner table is being permanently removed. Not yet, anyway. Per a B&S source, Getty is currently in talks with the show to stay on in a reduced capacity, perhaps as a recurring guest star. While a rep for the show declined to comment, Getty's spokesperson denies that the actor is leaving. Rumors about Getty's possible exit have been grist for the gossip mill for months. The actor's real-life drama -- the collapse of his marriage and ensuing tabloid-ready romance with Sienna Miller -- has allegedly alienated him from his co-stars, many of who had grown close to his wife, Rosetta, and their four young children. What's more, according to E! Online's Marc Malkin, Getty has been showing up late for work and proving increasingly "difficult" to work with. But per multiple sources, Getty's sorta-departure is not the result of any one issue but a combination of factors that also includes budgetary and storyline considerations. Tommy has long been considered the most disposable of B&S's siblings. Removing him, at least as a regular presence, frees up the show to introduce some new blood. In any case, don't expect Tommy to exit by way of a casket. Although an ABC insider says the idea of killing off a Walker has been discussed, the network would likely view such a twist as "too morbid." As a result, Tommy is likely to either relocate with his wife and baby, or just drift into the background and reappear for the occasional disastrous dinner party.

Justin's Pill Raid

When Scotty found Justin in the bathroom acting suspiciously, was anyone else afraid we were going to have a Misunderstanding in which the family suspected Justin of stealing Kevin's pain meds? Thank god they didn't swing at that pitch.
Ed Kennedy's picture

I wondered about this too

I mean, is Justin so recovered that Kevin's pills are just out and accessible with him in the house?  Or was there a missing scene, showing why Justin only found antibiotics on the counter and not the pain meds?

The episode was good, what I hope for and expect from the Walkers, though the fact that the dream sequence with Kevin and Julia getting busy was much steamier than anything Kevin has gotten into with his myriad of men bugged me quite a bit.  Luke and Noah?

Bonus points on the recap for including a Discworld reference.  Made my morning.

Recovered

If he can hang out with them while they are drinking, he should be able to manage the temptation of some pain pills - particularly given that he has medical training and knows the pills are (a) necessary for someone he cares for and (b) his family would likely crucify if they would. I realize MDs and other medical folks include some addicts and that in some situations, addicts would be the first to steal from spouses, family and friends, nothing in the season so far indicates Justin is in those kind of straits.

I have never said this before..

but, I was on Tommy's side in this episode. Yeah, he's a dick and I don't like him, but he is Elizabeth's father. How and when they tell her about her conception is up to him & what's her name. Kevin is an uncle, and a sperm donor, period. He knew this going into it, begrudgingly or not, he knew what he was doing. I'm just surprised that they didn't have papers drawn up before they went through with the donation, you would think with Kevin being a lawyer that's something they would've thought of up front.

Meanwhile, something needs to be done about the snoozefest that is Kitty and Robert. Could those two be any more boring??

Tommy/ Kevin

Eh.  All he said was he was having feelings and dreams, which he's entitled to do.  It wasn't until Tommy decided to throw the papers in his face, as if they were something he was obligated to sign after the fact instead of something he was asking for, that Kevin seemed to balk.  Had Tommy not been a dick and let Kevin actually work through the emotions he was feeling, the whole scene could have been avoided.

Keep in mind that I LIKE Tommy, but he was absolutely a total dick in every sense in that first hotel scene.  He wasn't in a position to demand that Kevin have no emotional reaction to what he'd gone through.

kevinfan's picture

re: Tommy/Kevin

I agree with the above.

Tommy is typically a dick, not because he never has understandable motivations, but because of how he BEHAVES in response to those motivations.  This episode was a perfect example of his being a selfish ass.  All Kevin did was admit he was having troubling dreams and some difficulty psychologically processing the revelation he was Elizabeth's bio father.  All of that was COMPLETELY understandable given the complex situation and the recent surgery.

But no, instead of even allowing Kevin a second to elaborate, Tommy flew off the handle and stormed out.  And then he threw the contract in Kevin's face and basically told him to sign it and shut up.

If Tommy was really a good father, he wouldn't have been so avoidant about the truth and he would have honored Julia's desire to formulate plan to tell her.  If he was a good brother, he would have at least given Kevin the chance to explain where he was coming from.

As usual, it was only about Tommy and his insecurities.  He's a dick.

Psionycx's picture

Tommy's a jerk. Kevin's a saint

I'm in full agreement here.

Tommy was being 100% unreasonable.  Kevin merely said that he was having dreams about Elizabeth and Tommy immediately went ballistic.  Kevin did not say he wanted to usurp custody of Elizabeth or demand public recognition that he is her biological father!

Because Tommy has self-esteem issues he immediately went nuts.  Yeah, he feels like a limp dick because he has gone and lost his beloved father's cherished family business to the clutches of Holly, who treats him like an underling.  He's also feeling emasculated because he, the hetero, is shooting blanks while Kevin, the homo, is virile. So when he measures himself up to his father, building a business from scratch and fathering 6(+?) children, Tommy has insecurity issues.

But, Tommy also treats Kevin like crap.  Even putting aside firing him, which was a demonstration of Tommy's arrogant belief that only he has a rightful place in their father's company, Tommy is contemptuous of Kevin.  He expected Kevin to fork over sperm, all because Tommy had jealousy issues about some stranger's sperm in his wife's body, and a desire for a child that was biologically related to him which he could thus pretend was his. When Elizabeth manifested liver problems he kind of took it for granted that Kevin would submit to having a piece cut out of his, even though it galled Tommy to be reminded that he wasn't the biological father.

Tommy has always been self-centered and of all the Walker children he really is the one closest to William in personality.  I've disliked him since Season One. What turned me off was the way he sulked about Sarah being named William's successor as head of the company instead of him.  But then all the problems William left behind came out and after one of Tommy's bitching sessions Sarah flat-out offered to step down and let him take over.  Tommy backed away from that.  He wanted to be the president of a healthy, profitable, Ojai Foods, not one that was wracked by problems. For all his complaining about not being made president he didn't want to step up to the responsibility in hard times.

Which kind of sums up Tommy. He wants everything his way and he will be an asshole if things aren't his way.  He's also the least likely of the Walkers to help out when things get rough.  He's more likely to go off to pursue his own needs and only help under duress.

So I don't like him.

What annoys me is that I hear so many people say it's Kevin who's mean.  But I would like some real proof.  In Seasons One and Two Kevin was the most reliable one to drop everything and go help out when he was needed. Yes, he did tend to bemoan it loudly.  But he did it nonetheless. And here, he very calmly forked over a chunk of his liver for his daughter.  Nobody had to bribe, cajole or threaten him into doing so.

So while verbally he may come across as bitchy, his actions speak louder than his words. Unlike Tommy, who often talks family love but almost invariably looks out only for himself.

As for Kevin having a sudden rise in feelinsg towards Elizabeth.  Well DUH!  He just had his body cut open and a piece taken out to save her life. You do not generally get that level of commitment from anonymous sperm bank donors! So dissing him because he's "only" her biological father, while Tommy is her "real" father amounts to a contemptuous level of political correctness. By donating a piece of his body to save her life he proved himself more than just a sperm donor.

So I think he deserves some respect.  It's not like he even hinted that he wanted to take Elizabeth away from Tommy and Julia. He just stumbled into Tommy's possessiveness and insecurity and that's where the ugliness came from.  Tommy was panicked that his illusion of being a bio-dad was about to get popped.  If anyone was denigrating non-biological fathers it was Tommy, not Kevin, because Tommy is the one who apparently believes that Elizabeth is not really his unless when she grows up she believes that it was his sperm that helped conceive her.

What a loser!

With the news that Getty

With the news that Getty (Tommy) is either getting the ax or reduced to a reoccurring role I hope the show kills off Tommy and his wife in a car accident then Kevin can raise Elizabeth with Scotty. For added drama, Julia's parents can try to sue for custody. This would also resolve Sarah's story line as she takes Tommy's place at Ohi and has to deal with Holly. no votes

Episode was just ok....I hope the rest of the season is better

I wasn't that moved by this episode. I think the whole dream sequence scenario is way overdone. Also the Kitty/Robert sex in the office was a big, big cliche and you know we would never have seen Scotty and Kevin do it in his law office after they got married. Poor secretary...another cliche. Seemed like the writers just took their brilliant caps off and went pedestrian with this episode. I did love the amount of time though spent on Nora purging some of her William angst. That's something that should be explored further and Dave Annable was adorable...I do like him better without Rebecca. And this was the first episode all season without Rebecca and Holly. Didn't miss them at all. My one continuing criticism of B & S is that the scenes are just too short and choppy. I wish they would cut back a bit and let us focus more on the major storyline for that episode. The whole Robert/Kitty thing really could have been deleted this time through and maybe emphasized at a later time. B+ for this one.

More Tepid than OK

I was sick or I probably would have taped and fast forwarded through much of it. It didn't really cover anything new, what they have been passing off as humor is more painful than not (I mean, really, Kevin agrees to stay with Nora and Scotty doesn't even put his foot down? He needs to recover but the hospital tosses him out on the sidewalk?) The lack of logic to make these plots bend to what the writers think they need to do is almost painful to watch.

I wouldn't miss Tommy or Julia, and I wouldn't miss Robert or Kitty, although they are unlikely to get out from under Calista contract. The show has too many cast members, too many plot balls in the air, and does an injustice in not developing anyone's stories. The only decent things in this episode was, agreed, NO HOLLY and NO REBECCA.

What happened with Ryan Lafferty?

They must be keeping the reveal for next season since there hasn't been any mention of him for the last few eps. Maybe with B. Getty's role reduction there will be room to add the Lafferty story line, or maybe the idea has been dropped altogether. I wish they'd drop Rebbecca. I was glad she wasn't in this ep, so bland. Justin is much more interesting without her. I agree with the observations about Tommy. I think dealing with his insecurities and unresolved issues with having a gay brother would make for an interesting story line, but since he's not going to be in the show much, oh well. I hope Saul's BF turns out to be the Foley character we met a few eps ago! Hee Hee.

YAY TOO!!! That is good! Loved that character/actor a lot!

Am WAITING for Saul's story to unfold!! Please, let it happen!

Same here, Rebecca - blaaaaand!

I do like the Tommy character! It's true, he is a jerk, but that makes him intersting! True - him "dealing with his insecurities and unresolved issues with having a gay brother" would indeed be interesting! I want Tommy to stay and Rebecca to go. I hope Balthazar Getty's real life issues/problems do NOT interfere with his Tommy role. Unless what they say is true, that he's becoming a jerk on set, but that can't be a reason to fire him. Or can it? Hmm.. I hope he stays.
