"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 311 Recap: "A Father Dreams"

Back at the Stately Walker Manor Post-Op Recovery Wing, Scotty’s got Kevin just the way he likes him, good and greased up and ready for swabbing. He’s certain, though, that Nora will interrupt them any minute and even bets Kevin twenty dollars that she’ll criticize his wound dressing.

Kevin asks Scotty the exact same thing I’ve been wondering myself all episode … why in the world are they at Nora’s house instead of in their own Fab Gay Pad? Scotty reminds Kevin that Nora offered to take care of him and Kevin accepted, and Kevin acknowledges that Nora does have a “Ph.D. in caring for her kids.” Why Scotty doesn’t say, “Good, then you can have Dr. Mom all to yourself” and storm out and take himself to the movies for the rest of the day is beyond me. But he’s Saint Scotty and used to taking whatever crap Kevin and Family throw at him. At least he manages to get in a couple of eye-rolls and bitchy looks behind Nora’s back.

Which he proceeds to do when Nora comes in and, as predicted, bashes Scotty’s lube and swab job, leading Scotty to whisper “Ka ching” in Kevin’s ears. Then, much to both their horror, and mine too, Nora announces it’s shower day for Kevin and proceeds to try to pull down Kevin’s pants. Scotty offers to do it himself, but she’s having none of it …

Nora: Don’t be silly. It’s nothing I haven’t seen before.
Scotty: Well hopefully it’s nothing you’ve seen in a long time.

Heh. This whole scene is actually really funny, especially the mortified look on Kevin’s face as he prepares for Mommy to get an up-close look at how his boys are doing after all these years.

Kevin has had enough coddling, though, and orders Nurse Ratched and Patch Adams out of his room immediately. On the way out, Nora mutters something about how the pain pills make Kevin so grumpy. With ice in his voice and daggers in his eyes, Scotty says behind Nora’s back, “Yeah, it’s the pain pills.” I’m wondering if all of this is leading up to Scotty’s head finally exploding, because lord knows mine would have long before now.

Commercials. And we come back to another dream sequence. It’s the one from the “next week” clip starring Hetero Kevin. First he and Julia tongue kiss, then she rips his shirt off, then they do it right on his desk, while that baby’s infernal crying continues off in the distance. I find it really depressing that the hottest sex we’ve seen Kevin have in a season and a half is in a dream, and it isn’t even with his own husband but with his sister-in-law. How is it that Kevin and Scotty instantly went from being a married couple to being an old married couple?
