Project Runway 406 Recap: "Eye Candy"

From Team Gay, Rami blew everyone else off the runway. He made a silver foil pleated skirt out of candy wrappers, and cut up some red pillowcases to make a bodice that fit his model like skin. We all knew he could drape fabric, but being able to drape candy wrappers? I'm not sure that's a useful skill. I know it's not marketable. And yet, I was impressed.

Jillian's red whip outfit looked kind of dazzling, although I didn't think it fit her model as well as the judges did, given how stiff it was. Can you say "bend forward and flash the audience, darling"? I can understand, though, that the soutache-like effect and rich red color of Twizzlers was pretty cool, if a bit messy and unpredictable to work with.

I once considered Victorya a strong contender for this season's winner, and in fact, a friend of mine's 20-something daughter wore her winning design from the Sarah Jessica Parker competition to a holiday party at my house last month. But this challenge was her worst yet. The design was a few boring layers of ruffles and frills, and she ignored Tim's workroom advice that it wasn't working to stick with her vision. The highly stylized stomp she told her model to use just reinforced the unwearability of the design.

The envelope, please: Ricky, Christian, Kit, and Kevin lived to design another day.

The three highest and three lowest scorers were Elisa, Chris, Rami, Sweet P, Jillian, and Victorya.

Jillian got the first critique, and it was clear she was one of the top scorers. Michael Kors told her, "You got the charm and spirit of working with all this crazy candy" and then giggled that it was "deliciously chic."
