"Project Runway" 7.12 Recap: The Big, Top Designers

On this “morning at home with Anthony,” Mr. Williams has decided he’s going to “pump up the volume” for this week’s Project Runway challenge: “Create a high-end runway look inspired by the circus.” Mila is “reeling” at being in the Final Five. I’m sure most of America is wishing she wasn’t. Early on, I was totally rooting for her: the 40-year-old “over the hill” woman, out to show these kids a thing or two. But she’s been so darn mean!

Of course, I’ve been saying the same thing about Emilio, and Jay hasn’t been much better with his blatant dislike for Mila. Seth Aaron and dear, sweet, Anthony are the only good guys left. But you know what they say? “Good guys finish last.” (I hope not!)

The designers are treated to a command performance by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. Growing up in Detroit, my family always went to the Shrine Circus. RB and B &B, I’m sure, was far too expensive. But never do I recall seeing shirtless, totally hot male circus performers back in my youth! Evidently, neither does Jay as he can’t stop staring at their “amazing bodies.”

With thirty minutes to sketch after the show, Tim Gunn warns the designers against getting “too costume-y.” Rather, “think fashion.” Emilio decides to go with stripes and polka dots. Mila is “mesmerized” by the Ringleader and his “larger than life presence.” Anthony chooses to use the female acrobat at his inspiration. Jay is modeling his look on the clowns: exaggerated, big pleats, waist bands etc. Seth Aaron promises to “extract” and bring colors/elements “down to a fashion level.”

The budget is set at $300, with thirty minutes to shop at Mood, and this will be a two day challenge. Tim tells everyone to “turn up the volume,” and “make it work!” At this point, Anthony confides in us that his “destiny is in Bryant Park.” (I hope so!)
