"Torchwood" Episode 103 Recap: "Ghost Machine"

Seeing ghosts- When we rejoin the Torchwood gang, Owen and Gwen are in hot foot pursuit of a suspected alien. They run frantically down streets and through alleys, their target leading them all over town. Back at Torchwood's hideout, Toshiko is tracking the alien by reading its energy trail, whatever that means. On their earpieces, Owen and Gwen can hear Tosh: "Owen, Gwen, left, into the alley! Right, 30 meters!"

"What can you see?" Gwen yells breathlessly as she races down yet another dark alley. Toshiko doesn't have a visual yet – she only knows it's alien. For all they know, they’re chasing a stray cat.

Captain Jack is also giving chase, from the Torchwoodmobile. He warns the others they don't know what they're dealing with. Just then, Toshiko gets an image of the alien from one of the city's ubiquitous CCTV surveillance cameras. It's cleverly disguised as a skinny young dude.

Gwen is fast as a bunny rabbit. Leaping over fences in a single bound, and sliding under a lowering gate, she's gaining on the target. Jack leaps out of the car, joining up with Owen. They both get stuck behind the closing gate just long enough for Gwen and her little girl sneakers takes off out of sight.

Gwen catches up to the suspect in a bustling train station. Running at full speed, she reaches out and tries to grab him, getting him by the sleeve of his jacket. They tussle. The alien wriggles out of his coat and is off again. Gwen stands holding his empty jacket, winded and pissed.

Gwen: Damn!
Toshiko: You scored! You did it!
Gwen: I was that close!
Toshiko: No! You got it.
Gwen:
I've lost him, Tosh. I've lost him…
Toshiko: I swear, whatever it is, you're holding it.

On the monitor, Toshiko watches Gwen pace back and forth, holding the alien's jacket. Gwen searches the pockets and finds what looks like an alien TV remote control – a metal device with small lights and buttons. She has no idea what it does or if it's dangerous. So what does she do? She starts pushing the buttons, of course. Somewhere, an alien is wondering who keeps changing the channel.

Suddenly, Gwen is transported to another dimension. We know this because the picture gets all wavy; also the universal sign for flashbacks, dream sequences and acid trips.

Gwen is standing alone and the rail station is empty and quiet. From out of the shadows, a small blond boy wearing short pants and a little cap slowly approaches her. Holding a suitcase in one hand and a teddy bear in the other, he stops a few feet from Gwen and looks around. He's severely creepy.

Gwen's not sure he can see her – she seems to be in some sort of alternate universe. But then he says in a thin little voice, "I want to go home." Just then, Gwen notices the tag tied to the button of his jacket. It says "Tom Erasmus Flanagan." Luggage tags for children. There's an idea.

"No one knows who I am here. I'm lost," little Tom says. Gwen's eyes are bugging out of her head. Tom turns and toddles back into the shadows. Gwen calls to him to come back, but he ignores her and keeps walking until he disappears from sight. Kids. They never frigging listen.

And as quickly as the window into the alternate dimension opened, it closes and Gwen is back in the present. The train station is again crowded, noisy and probably a little stinky, if UK train stations are anything like the ones in New York.

Jack and Owen finally catch up to Gwen. Still a little stunned from her trip into wherever, she turns slowly to them and says, "I've just seen a ghost." And, dammit, it didn't look anything like Patrick Swayze as Sam Wheat.

Ghost busters- Back at Chez Torchwood, Gwen is at a loss to explain what she saw. She says she could feel the little boy's fear as if it were her own. Toshiko plays the station CCTV footage again. All it shows is Gwen grabbing the jacket as the alien slips away. A few seconds later, Jack and Owen run into the frame.

Gwen insists her vision really happened and she's not "bloody senile." Hitting the old crack pipe again, eh Cooper?
