Torchwood Episode 206 Recap: "Reset"

Right then Martha starts the convulsion table dance, and we can see something trying to burst out of her stomach. Uh-oh. Jack rushes over and cries for Owen to do something. So once again, he revs up the EarPhone, figuring maybe third time’s a charm. Jack is understandably skeptical given the last few efforts. But Owen zaps her anyway, and she promptly collapses.

She’s clearly dead. At least, that’s what you might think if you’re Amish and are watching TV for the first time during your Rumspringa break. All the rest of us know this is the old fake-out, and sure enough, she soon gasps awake and is just fine.

Ushering out a woozy Martha, Owen decides that, given she’s already been violated by one alien life form that day, it’s the ideal time to hit on her, promising to “supervise” her bed rest. She shoots him down with the old “I’ve got a boyfriend who saved my life before you” line.

Outside, they meet up with the rest of the team. Jack instructs Tosh to shut down the Pharm via laptop, setting off the sprinklers and other emergency systems that will essentially destroy the place. Tosh has just started up when Copley comes up to them with a gun pointed, saying there’s no way he’s going to let them destroy his life’s work.

Owen again tries the strategy of kissing the guy’s ass, complimenting him on his many achievements, and then saying, “You know you don’t want to shoot.” So naturally Copley shoots, hitting Owen square in the chest. Then Copley points the gun at Jack, saying, “You’re next.” Turns out he’s next, because Jack gets him with a shot right to the forehead.

The Hubbies gather around a seriously bleeding Owen and try to save him, until Martha pronounces he’s dead. So Tosh’s stellar track record with boyfriends continues. Frankly, the Pharm could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if instead of hiring a hit man they just had Tosh date all the clinical subjects.

But this being TV, and sci-fi to boot, there are obviously varying degrees of “dead.” Owen might show up in flashbacks a la Lost, for example. Or he might continue showing up as a ghostly Jiminy Cricket figure offering tedious words of advice to the living. Or, they can fall back on some sort of space-time Rift/alien-technology contrivance to bring him back. Of course, there’s always the possibility he’s really, truly, 100% dead and won’t ever be back. Does anyone know if they’re shooting Bleak House 2?

Torchwood Needs Martha!

Okay, just so we’re clear up front:  Gwen needs to die and be replaced by Martha.

It’s no great secret that I hate Gwen (God knows I say so often enough).  But there were always questions.  Was I being unfair?  Was she really more sympathetic than I was giving her credit for being?  Was it just that I felt annoyed by the persistent threat she poses to Jack and Ianto?

Nope.

This episode cleared it.  I really just hate Gwen.

Martha was just such a fabulous addition to the team.  Unlike Gwen’s “It’s-all-about-me-so-get-out-of-my-spotlight” attitude, Martha fit in neatly and quickly, even with Owen who felt threatened by her presence at first.  Her interaction with everybody was so great.  It didn’t come off as preachy or nagging the way that Gwen does.  Martha is also an everywoman who got sucked into the world of the fantastic, but somehow she’s just more fun about it.

The way she handled Jack and Ianto’s relationship was great.  Somehow I would expect that Gwen (when she finds out) will end up dragging Jack off by the ear and shrieking at him for half an episode.  Martha is more of the fun fag hag.  And what the heck, we already know that Jack and Ianto are bisexual.  They can add Martha to the mix and make it threesome.  We all ready know Ianto likes chocolate.

Indeed, that makes for an ideal Torchwood Jack/Ianto/Martha (let’s come up with a portmanteau for that one!) and Tosh/Owen (if something can be done for his “situation”) with Gwen dying a horrible, tragic and painful death so that poor Rhys can find a proper mate.

By the way, interesting interrogation techniques they practice down there in Abu Gay-ib.  I’m very impressed by Ianto’s ability to handle crazed Weevils while wearing a suit without getting dirty.  Still, it seemed unnecessary.  You had a military guy held prisoner by three bisexual men.  Somehow I think they could have gotten info out of him some other way, although it would have been kind of gross had his chest exploded during the action (“Jack!  When I said f*ck him hard I didn’t mean THAT hard!”).

All-in-all this was a really fantastic episode and I hope that this sets the standard from now on.  Unfortunately, we only have Martha for two more episodes and then it’s back to the Princess of Wales’s reign of terror...

Pity about Owen, because he really is showing beatufiul porcelain skin these days.

Fantastic recap!  Loved every minute!

Gwen

DennisDennisFirst of all, back when tthe vote was called, I voted for let Gwen alone, I have since chanced my mind. She should have been the one shot in this episode. What an anal rentitive biach!

Too late to ask you guy's to back off Owen. I alway's thought he played his part well. He was kind of desperate, never getting anything right until the very last second, and trying too hard to cover. He couldn't get laid at a nymphomainach convention,( first episode, he steals alien cocaine that makes him irresitable).

I have no Idea why he dislike Tosh, but everyone has someone they dislike on site, even desperate people.

Wordy word WORD! to

Wordy word WORD! to everything you said! Martha only points up the lack of charisma of the rest of the regular cast. I should have felt a real fear/sadness when Owen was killed. Instead, I was all, eh. Gwen -- forget it. Martha makes her look like the pale imitation of a Doctor Who Companion that she is. I think "Torchwood" is getting better, but how wonderful would it be with Capt. Jack, Capt. John as the sexy, untrustworthy ex-boyfriend, Martha as the brilliant, sexy sidekick, and Ianto as whatever he is. I'm not a, Ianto fan, but I'll give him to those who enjoy him -- I think he was the most interesting when Capt. John was ragging him -- that kind of interaction is just what this show needs!
Adjovi's picture

Really enjoyed this ep!

And, as always, great recap! Especially loved the line about faking injury to avoid middle school gym class. Hee!!!

Martha really was a refreshing addition to the mix, and although I did feel some initial resentment coming from Gwen, Tosh and Owen, I really didn't get any of that from Ianto. I just thought he was being all professional with her (he smiled when Jack enthusiastically embraced her in the beginning, so didn't think he saw her as a threat, and he was pretty much the only one who didn't ask her about her connection to Jack). I really loved that cute exchange between the two of them about the UNIT cap. (of course I'd seen it on YouTube about 100 times prior...) I totally agree with you that the writer's treatment of Jack/Ianto this season is, well, almost as frustrating as last season. I kinda get the sense that things will get better (more clear), but who knows with this show.

I liked the story in this one as well--an interesting alien, creepy medical facilities, moral dilemma that Torchwood itself often has to face (good of few versus the good of many)--was one of the better stories of the season. And Alan Dale, you always give such good villian.

Oh Tosh. Jesus. She really is karma's punching bag, isn't she? Who'd she f-over in the past life to have her pining after Owen?

In other news, and since no one in my world has even heard of Torchwood, thought I would share. Went last night to see "Be Kind, Rewind" (cute, but gets a little too golly gee at times), and there was a commercal for Torchwood wedged in between the ad for Patron tequila and Doublemint gum in the previews. Just so totally random.

Cameo's picture

Don't forget Sport's Equipment

"Hence the need for stopwatches, measuring tape, and God knows what other office supplies." All that, and hockey stuff, or so Jack's quip to that officer in "Sleeper" leads us to believe.Clearly, Jack probably keeps a hockey stick in his bedroom.

Also just have to say. Ok, look all the fun amazing alien technology Torchwood has, you'd think they'd have access to Kevlar. I mean are you kidding me, they knew they were going into a situation where there were lots of people with guns, so someone might have suggested wearing bullet proof vests. Also, it isn't like its the first time someone from the Torchwood team has been shot, so you'd think after the first time someone got they'd invest in some vests.

And another thing, Tosh is also a doctor, she has a medical degree, she's worked in  the medical field. She is Dr. Sato, and this is never acknowledged.

Ricky's picture

Write a note to BBC...

Tell them to bring Martha back again! Tosh/Owen/Martha story may be great! Jack tells Ianto to wear nothing but boots and red cap! Jack will be his "daddy" at night. Ditch Gwen & Rhy away on honeymoon!

Thanks for the second set of eyes!

Great Recap. Half the fun of this show is reading the recaps after watching it.

Thanks for the second set of eyes! I thought that was an old mayor of Cardiff from Doctor Who sign in the back ground. (Someone can correct me, but I think the correct term is Whovians not Who heads).

Got to love Naoki Mori's (Tosh) acting in the scene with Owen about the date. Its just so painful to watch Tosh (queen of low self esteem) be that desperate for him. Poor thing is a pure doormat, will let him still flirt with others. Have the thought that the writers were trying to make Owen seem like a nicer guy to Tosh so that there would be some sympathy for him when the end came. Even Jack's powers to live forever might be put to the test by a date with Tosh, poor thing.

Anyone else find it strange that even when they were alone together Martha and Jack would not come out and say "The Doctor" but did all that "him" business ? Love that Martha has gotten a job with UNIT. Perfect place for someone with her past experience and her brains and courage.

Really smart episode. Story moved along at a quick pace. Ok, Tosh's Weekend at Bernie's idea was a weak point and I too wondered about why things came to a crashing halt at the end so that Gwen could have a couple of minutes to stare at the bug in the tank. Whatever did they do with Ms Morgan ? Saved her from the killer but just leave her to die from the bugs ?

My "I hate Gwen" moment. When Martha first arrives at the Hub and Jack has to explain who / what UNIT is, Gwen made some comment about forgetting / not knowing which organization they were. You've been in the job how long now ??? You were in charge while Jack was away ??? Given the choice of swatting her or the bug, I'd vote Gwen. Stupid Stupid Stupid.

Having to search out and download the episodes from the web, I sort of knew the surprise at the end a head of time. Wish the writers had come up with better episode titles for the next two shows, they sort of give the plot away just a bit. Anyway, I'll try and refrain from watching them before rest of you stateside get to see them.

I loved this episode!

I loved this episode! Martha is pretty amazing and she needs to become a regular. Martha must be a Janto fangirl, cajoling Ianto into admiting he "dabbles" with Jack, then getting all giggly about it. And I loved the way Ianto kinda went off to Happy-Shagging-Jack-Land for a minute there.

Did anyone else want to shoot Gwen when she did the whole "Hand on the jar" thing with the mayfly? She is just so useless and this episode blissfully points that out.

I'll admit, Owen was never a big favourite of mine, but I couldn't help but be upset when he was shot. Who will make snarky comments, do doctory things, and DAMMIT HE WAS ABOUT TO GO OUT WITH TOSH!

By the way, I liked the very subtle reference to John's antics as revealed by the interview with Gareth David-Lloyd. Fanfiction manna, that was. (F.F.M.)

I want to be a hero like Captain Jack Harkness, kicking butt and snogging anything with a pulse! Besides, then I get a sexy receptionist of my very own.

Dennis's picture

Dabble

DennisDennisI hatted that "dable" referance. Either they are shagging or not, why be so oblique? As another poster said, they have no problem getting almost pornographic with Gwyn and Rhys, but even a good kiss with Ianto and Jack is lackiking

 Get with it BBC!!!Dennis

Say what?!

Dennis, Jack & Ianto had a fabulous open-mouth makeout scene just three episodes ago in "To the Last Man".  It was orders of magnitude more involved than anything I can recall seeing on U.S. TV other than on Logo or Here.

For your reference, since you seem to have missed it:

Jack/Ianto Kiss Torchwood 2x03

The only thing we're still waiting on is to see Jack and Ianto actually in bed (or else copulating in Owen's autopsy bay).  But in fairness we haven't actually seen Jack in bed with anyone yet, which I'll concede is a let down.

gwen! why must you be so pathetic?!

gwen is sOoOoOo pathetiiiic. god, what was it? 2 episodes ago when she told everyone how much she loves rhys and how good a man he is??? raise your hand if you remember that episode.

but whaddya know? she is back again pining for jack! So pathetic. what next? they're gonna have her baby hungry?

Psionycx's picture

Why Gwen is pathetic

1)  She's nowhere near as pretty as Martha

2)  She's nowhere near as pretty as Ianto

3)  Unless my visual perceptions are skewed Tosh has a better rack

4)  My visual perceptions are not skewed: Owen has better skin

5)  Martha's arrival has bumped Gwen to #3 in queue for Jack, behind Ianto and Martha, but still ahead of Tosh and Owen

6)  She has an utterly adorable boyfriend who's slavishy devoted to her but whom she treats like shit

7)  She's such a hair-trigger temper that Ianto now has to announce guests over the speaker system in order to avert a verbal assault on the visitor

8)  Despite the fact that UNIT is way more public than Torchwood and has been openly active in the UK for decades she has no idea who they are, despite being the supposed leader of Torchwood in Jack's absence

9)  She's now mastered the art of being curt to police officers, despite having been one herself, while still managing to feel empathy for giant bugs in oversize jars

10)  The gap in her teeth appears to be widening and may account for Jack keeping his distance as he fears having a large groove carved into his ****

...anymore. What is *really* pathetic is the non-stop psychotic "Gwen hate" ranting. You know what folks? We. Get. It. You hate the character Gwen. There is so much more to comment on in these fun shows. And given that Eva is a good friend of John's, I doubt she'll be leaving any time soon. Get over it.

I am 2 episodes ahead in watching this from the rest of you. Na na na na-na. May you writhe in anticipation. (ducking and running)

Flashback

DennisDennisI posted no comment last week because I missed that episode, I caught the rerun this week What a greeseball Adam was! He would never have been able to plant memories im me, I wouldn't have let him touch me! ewwwwwwww

I find it Hard to believe anyone put up with the touch from someone they had no memories of, especially when others said they did. That was a big red flag. Alien in the Hub, do something.

Martha's alias

Just to further geek it up, Samantha Jones was also the name of a previous Doctor's companion in the books that the BBC put out between ending the original series and releasing the current relaunch. She was a 19 year old eco-campaigner who fawned hopelessly after the Doctor to an irritating degree and got herself into unforgivable danger due to her own incompetence. She was almost universally loathed by Who fans. So, basically, a blond version of Gwen.
Campion's picture

Samantha Jones

Thanks for posting that. I thought that was the name of the 8th Novel Doctor's first companion. I came to hate Rose as she seemed to be a carbon copy of Sam, ie nothing new.

Were there any Sex and the City jokes in this episode that we missed ?

Psionycx, your....

Liz, please calm down. I guess I should have written "teasing tone on/off". You don't have to get over anything if you don't want to. But I still have the right to write how what you say makes me feel. And I feel like ya'll should get over it! (teasing tone off again)

Believe it or not...

..but except for item #10, all of this was inspired just by this last episode (Reset)!  I'm sure that if I spent time pondering previous episodes this could keep expanding indefinitely.

What can I say?  Martha really set this one off.  I don't know if it's just that Martha is better looking, more intelligent, more competent and more personable than Gwen or what.  Perhaps her obvious superiority over Gwen just really cemented my feelings.

The whole team just seemed so much livelier with her there.  It was just so nice to start actually having Torchwood on an adventure.  Not Torchwood on an adventure to demonstrate how inconvenient all this alien rubbish is to Gwen's otherwise cozy domestic life (when she's not actively cheating on Rhys or just mooning over Jack).  We realize that the Doctor is very good at getting his Companions up to speed on the whole universe thing.  Clearly superior to Torchwood orientation training.  But Martha really seems to have fun with this life, as opposed to Gwen who's just addicted to it.

Now I know that in some aspects things are unfixable.  Freema is a lot more beautiful than Eve and that's that.  But it's just that there felt like there was more give-and-take in the dialogue.  I can't imagine Ianto and Gwen having a conversation like he and Martha did.  Not just because Ianto's not likely to discuss having sex with Jack with Gwen.  But because most Gwen "conversations" come across as if they were monologues and she's a little surprised that someone is speaking back at her.

I know, I know.  I'm obsessed.  What can I say?  I love Torchwood but I hate Gwen.

It's really a problem of the writing for Gwen...

These are the same writers that write dialogue for all the other characters in the same episodes, unless there is shared writing duties within episodes that we don't know about (i.e. writer A does Jack's dialogue, writer B does Gwen's, etc).

So the real question is why do the writers dislike Gwen so much that they continue to write her in such an unlikable fashion (see your earlier 10 point list)?

Average (1 vote):

Lyle Masaki's picture

Gwen's problem...

IMO, is that they haven't figured out her role, which was the problem with every character in season one, now it's just Gwen. So far in each episode they failed to explain what she brings to the operation. Sure they may mention her police skills (though wasn't she a pretty low level officer at the beginning?) and an outsider's perspective but we haven't seen her demonstrate good police work or any other contribution. I think at first she was supposed to be the one with heart but Ianto turns out to be so much better at that.

BTW, it's great seeing all the Martha love, here. I got the impression that she was hated by a vocal segment of Who fandom (who mostly hated her for not being Rose).

I think you're right about Gwen

You raise some good points about Gwen. And what's worse, the writers have her cheating on the lovable Rhys, which makes her even easier to dislike. Owen hasn't been likeable either but at least he has a very defined role.

As for Martha, I think saving the world scored her a few brownie points even with diehard Rose fans. The return of Rose in an episode of series 4 should be interesting.

Yes, she's more beautiful,

Yes, she's more beautiful, but she's also a better actor AND her character is intelligent and more interesting. When she walked into the Hub it was like someone had finally turned on the lights in that dreary cellar -- and turned the humor and fun back on in Capt. Jack. When she goes, they better get Capt. John back pronto!

Characterization

And that's really what it all boils down to.  There's this credibility issue surrounding Gwen's entire character.

Gwen was a patrol cop, not a detective or something.  So her forensic police skills can't have been that fantastic yet.  Even now, after some considerable time with Torchwood, she still seems utterly clueless (doesn't know who UNIT is?!).  And she has a tendency to get distracted by personal concerns at odd moments.

We're supposed to believe that she was the best candidate to lead Torchwood while Jack was gone?!

Add to this the fact that writers continued beating the dead horse of how being in Torchwood is so difficult for Gwen because unlike the others she has a real life.  *YAWN*

Thus Martha brought in contrast.  She's also someone who got yanked out of normal life and into a world of aliens and space/time travel.  Yet she comes across as genuinely enjoying herself rather than this pseudo-victim thing that Gwen has going on.  And I do wonder about Even Myles because a sizeable part of acting isn't just the ability to do one's part, but it's to interact with the other actors and Gwen's interactions all seem so tense and wooden.  Freema seemed to generate a much more relaxed, interactive atmosphere.

Add to that the fact that it's been hard to do much character development for the others because, despite what some perceive as the writers hating Gwen, they nonetheless make her the focus of most of the show, cutting time spent on the others so we can see more of Gwen's travails.

I agree that Martha was a breath of fresh air and I only wish she were a permanent addition.

Ah. That's the reason why I can't stand the character of Gwen. It's all about "how Gwen's going to deal" in most of the episodes. Tosh, Owen and Ianto get maybe one or two episodes that focus on their lives, but Gwen's supposedly "the heart" of the show?! My left tit she is. I don't like Owen as much, but it's nice when the writers can allow themselves to spread their interest to those characters OTHER than the wonderful Gwen.

I agree that Martha was a breath of fresh air and I only wish she were a permanent addition.

It was so nice to see Martha interacting with the Woodies. I love Freema as an actress and I also love Billie's contributions to the Doctor Who universe, but I won't put them against each other as "Who was the Better Companion" for the Doctor. IMO, it defeats the purpose as to why he needs these companions in the first place. They all play a part in how he interacts with humanity, in whatever generation/place he's currently discovering at that moment.

Nevertheless - I can't stand Gwen myself, so bravo for your list.

Little Hound Dog's picture

I so agree.  And what's

I so agree.  And what's more, I can't imagine Gwen and Jack having a conversation like Ianto and Jack do - can't imagine Jack trying to playfully entice Gwen to photocopy her butt with him for example.  So to me all the Jack/Gwen stuff feels very shoe horned, I don't feel any chemistry there whatsoever.  And I can't believe we're supposed to consider her a sympathetic character given how awfully she treats Rhys.  Relationship troubles I could empathize with, but he's nothing but good to her and yet she seems to find it so easy to cheat on him, lie to him, and blatantly lust after her boss while sharing tender moments with him.

Loved Martha so much in this episode.

an ok ep

Still loving the recaps!

ok they lost me at the door. While I enjoyed the newspaper clipping from Jack's 1st Cardiff adventure, I couldn't believe the door it was posted on. No wonder Ianto doesn't have to literally "mind the store". Only the brain-dead or airheaded tourist would ever consider shopping/askinig for directions in what's essentially a storage area.
Also,if they wanted Martha to be a secret (the "visitor's pov), why included her in the "next week on.." ad at the end of Adam? So she walks right in and makes herself at home. okay, great. after having Adam "fit in" [at 1st], some tension would have been nice, oh, wait: 3 potential catfights... And nothing happens. such teases, those writers. promises, shmomises.

Campion - agree. How could Gwen NOT HAVE KNOWN. I've stated this before: She's still recovering from hitting her head 1st ep. We'll find out later that Torchwood was a dream like Oz or Dallas.

Agree. Lack of curiosity = a bit (only a bit)worrying - possible explanation is the Hubbies think that they did ask but forgot [Adam} -though can't explain why they didn't ask again. They ask about everything else but not the important stuff. To be fair: Jack hasn't asked them about the Himalayas trip Saxon sent them on.

Why haven't they used the contacts before? they're actually useful. I'd prefer them over the "invisible phones" they have. Forget Gwen (easy ain't it?) - the phones REALLY Annoy me. What do they do THINK at it?!? or Is it, 1 tap for Jack, 2 for Tosh, press & hold for Gwen?? Where can I get one?

Did anyone else start to wonder what the Hubbies dorm room must have been like? I doubt Ianto's would've been like Barry's. Gwen's might have been. Owen/Tosh: would they have had time to add homey touches?

Loved

  • Ianto's 'lost-in-memory' moment But then I like any Ianto moment. 'course i'd prefer Janto moments but the writers aren't providing.
  • The final act with Torchwood destroying the Pharm.
  • Jack's "not listening to White Hall"
  • End of World Survivors Club
  • Tosh asked Owen out.
  • Owen finally seems to be stepping up (Martha's Doctor-like influence?? 'course why Jack wouldn't/doesn't have such an influence baffles me)
hated/disliked:
  • Why no Martha/Tosh time?
  • the "him" references - i get that [you] want new viewers for Doctor Who but, unless the Hubbies have taken to eavesdropping/spying on Jack, why the secrecy?
  • The Pharm security - dead-guy-at-wheel and they're let them in??
  • agree: lack of bullet-proof vests. Stupidity 101. How could Jack have overlooked such a necessity?
  • hCampion: Gwen's not knowing about UNIT - amnesia pill side effect, maybe? can't make up reason for her being in charge of team, though.
  • Tosh loses yet another potential partner

Psionycx: a possible portmanteau is (get this) JANTHA
& enjoyed the "Why Gwen's pathetic" post.

Cameo: they haven't actually established that Doctor Toshiko Sato from Aliens of London/World War Three is this Tosh. Though, they also didn't establish that _That_ Tosh was actually a medical doctor. (at least as I remember it)

Steven Frank's picture

We're so in sync Brenrose

I had similar thoughts about the TW front office, how they ruined Martha's entrance, and the lack of continuity after the Adam amnesia epidemic (just had to cut all those rants because the recap was so long already). I love seeing where we all pick up on the same issues and how even as huge TW fans similar things often tend to bug us all.

About Tosh

I really don't know for sure, and I don't know if the writers even know, or have revealed the whole story. From what I could find, it seems to be Tosh is the same person from Aliens of London/World War Three. Now, for fun with time lines. Tosh used to work for UNIT, and was then recruited for Torchwood in 2005. The events of Aliens of London took place in 2006, apparently, and its not clear if Tosh was working for Torchwood, UNIT, or both at the time.

She is called Dr. Sato, and examines the alien body. I think the running theory is that she could be a medical doctor and a computer expert, and took on the role of technolgy expert in Torchwood, because that's what was needed. She also seems to like certainity, things like mathmatics, where as in medicine there is always a degree of uncertainity. As for her being the same woman, it hasn't been contradicted and is generally ascepted.

Also, if she wasn't the same character, she probably wouldn't be given Like how, Freema played a woman who was killed in Torchwood 1 in London, and Martha mentioned having a cousin who died there. If they didn't want Tosh to be the same Tosh, she might have mentioned having a relative to exsplain it, but they chose to have the same actress play a character with the same name, so the logical conslusion is its the same character. I honestly wish the character's backstories were more clear sometimes, just so we know the writers know who the characters are.

UNIT and Gwen

I can't believe I've just registered so that I can make this (mostly unimportant) comment, but here goes . . . As far as I know, this is the first mention of UNIT in the Torchwood series. I'm trying to think through the first season and am pretty sure I'm right in this. So, because there are those who watch Torchwood and have never seen Doctor Who, someone had to ask the "Who's UNIT?" question because it's one that the viewer may have been thinking as well.

This happens all the time in TV Land and while I'm no fan of Gwen, I think in this case her comment was necessary. Who else was going to ask it? Not Jack, and certainly not Ianto, who spent most of the "Sleeper" episode telling us he knows everything. Tosh and Owen have been in Torchwood for longer than Gwen so they are not as likely to ask the question either.

Since Gwen is supposed to be the "viewers eye" into the group, it seems she had to act unaware of Unit so that it could be explained to the viewer. Did she look stupid? Yes, and that's unfortunate because she does a good enough job of that on any given week on her own.

I'm the least likely person to ask anyone to cut her some slack, but to me, that was just one more way the writers are messing up. There were other ways to do that which might have required more creativity, but they went for the quickest solution yet again. They write Gwen differently in every episode and can't make up their mind about Owen either, which has frustrated me all season. He's nice to Tosh in one episode and mean in the next.

It's fairly obvious there is no one writer overseeing the tone of the show and the motivation of the characters and I think it's the one thing that is keeping this show from being consistently great every week.

Gwen and on-the-job training

Well consider, when Gwen was a police officer do you think it would have been considered unusual if she'd never heard of Interpol?

Gwen has now been working for Torchwood for a while, and indeed was apparently the leader of the Torchwood Three team in Jack's absence (for reasons completely incomprehensible).  This would (presumably) entail her taking the time to learn something about the environment in which Torchwood operates given that it is a specialized agency in a quasi-intelligence field.

UNIT is the big international anti-alien agency (although most people assume they're counter-terrorism).  Unlike Torchwood, which is in theory secret (despite being well-known by everyone in Cardiff) UNIT is quite visible.  For decades when big weirdness went down in the UK (on Doctor Who) odds were good that UNIT troops would show up.

Thus, Gwen's ignorance of them implies a general ignorance of the field she supposedly works in.  Or else it's a gaping plot hole.  Given her general obliviousness I'm inclined to believe the former.

Actually,OlivaJones, UNIT

Actually,OlivaJones, UNIT was mentioned in "Greeks Bearing Gifts". Jack kept asking for "that report for Unit". Gwen could've ask "Who?" then.

I love your reviews. You

I love your reviews. You crack me up. I especially liked, "Because the best way to celebrate overcoming a major disease that requires you inject yourself several times a day is by injecting yourself several times a day for recreational reasons". And you are absolutely right about the Pharm saving money by getting Tosh to date their lab rats. Poor girl. Thank you for explaining who Christopher Isherwood is. I watched this epsiode with my fellow theatre buddies and I was the only one who didn't get the joke.

I'm cracking up so much...

my brother's come up to see what's so darn funny. At this point, he observed the "Pornochio" line. LMAO! I have now saved the "Why Gwen's so pathetic" list onto MS Word. LOL about "rich, powerful, evil old white guy" Alan Dale. It is revealed in Torchwood De-Classified that all the crew could only think of him as "Jim from Neighbours". Anyway great recap as always :)
