Torchwood Episode 211 Recap: “Adrift”
Cardiff, nighttime. A kid walks across this really cool-looking futuristic bridge thingie that’s apparently the Cardiff Barrage, and thank you Wikipedia for that helpful article all about its history, construction, and purpose. I love you Wiki, warts and inaccuracies and all, truly I do! Mid-barrage, the kid gets a message on his phone from a Mom trying waaaaay too hard to be down with the tweens and their “texting,” since she writes: “UR 9 mins late! MUMXX,” and I can just imagine how mortified this kid is by her when his friends are actually around. Still mid-barrage, he looks up toward a nearby building, where a woman, presumably MUMXX, is standing at the window watching him. I guess some people would find that sweet, but I find it disturbing in a Norman Bates-y way. Is it possible for a mother to stalk her own child? He texts back, “Chill!” and she laughs and turns from the window. As the kid continues walking, a gust of mysterious wind kicks up, and then a mysterious light shines down on him. We get this overhead POV shot of him that spins and spins, and then the kid is suddenly gone, and it’s the most X-Files moment we’ve seen yet on this show.
Cut to Gwen and Officer Andy standing mid-barrage in the light of day. I’m amazed that somebody even remembered that Officer Andy was ever on this show. I was always kind of intrigued by him and I’m glad to see he’s back.
Andy tells Gwen that a kid named Jonah Bevin, born in 1993, disappeared seven months ago and hasn’t been seen since. If you ask me, give your kid a symbolically loaded name like “Jonah,” and you can’t be all that surprised if he disappears and/or has an aversion to long ocean voyages. Andy’s getting into details of the investigation, but Gwen is barely following him, giving the clear impression that listening to him is about as important to her as things like competent police work and carefully assessing all the evidence before jumping to erroneous, possibly life-threatening conclusions. Andy calls her on how distracted she is, saying she’s got a face like a “slapped ass.” Heh. Oh, Andy, how I’ve missed you. But unfortunately this is about when the “new” Andy emerges, with him getting increasingly whiny, needy, and irritating, and I start to realize that with Rhys having been given a backbone this season, they needed someone to provide the doormat/wet noodle role and it’s going to be the formerly tolerable Andy.
Gwen asks Andy why he blew off her wedding and suggests that he “still has feelings” for her. Excuse me?! What does she mean, “still”?! Did we know he had feelings for her before and I just blocked it out? And how is it possible that, other than Ianto and the stripper at her bachelorette party, every other man on this show has had the hots for her, including the ones with a good dose of gay in them like Captains Jack and Spike? I’m sorry, but that just strains credibility well past the breaking point, not an easy feat on a show that routinely tests credibility by the minute. Returning to the subject of Jonah’s disappearance, Gwen wonders if there’s anything “strange” about the case, and Andy accuses her of already knowing. Then he shows her some CCTV footage to demonstrate how Jonah was there one second and gone the next. But his big “gotcha” reveal is footage taken 45 minutes later of Jack arriving on the scene, or as Andy calls him, “Your mate, Mulder.” Heh. Even Andy realizes how much this rips off The X-Files.
