Torchwood Episode 211 Recap: “Adrift”

It’s tempting to take some sort of perverse pleasure here in how spectacularly Gwen’s nosiness and refusal to listen to Jack exploded in her face. But I actually don’t think she necessarily did the wrong thing. And I do think Nikki is better off knowing the truth.

Granted what happened to Jonah is horrible, but it’s still, I’d think, better than some of the much more horrifying things a parent might imagine could have happened (and might still be happening) to their missing children. Not to mention that many people in Nikki’s situation would do anything for the chance to be reunited with their children even for a few moments just to hold them and tell them they love them.

But there’s really no clear or simple answers here, and it shows how science fiction at its best can address some truly thought-provoking ethical issues. I’m glad to see that Torchwood can go there, and I think for the most part this episode did an admirable job with some pretty tough material.

We cut to a mini-montage that shifts between Gwen tearing down her room of missing persons photos, and Nikki throwing out the crowd videos and cleaning up Jonah’s room. Gwen touches the photos and starts crying. Gwen touches Jonah’s pillow and starts crying. I watch both of them and start crying.

Chez Gwys. Gwen comes in to find Rhys lighting candles for a romantic evening. Gwen tells him that tonight they can talk about whatever he wants, kids, the future, anything. But he can see how upset she is and encourages her to tell him about it. He holds her to him, and she says, “There’s this woman, Nikki. And she had a son Jonah.”

Good episode, no? Weevils believe that the guy who wrote it, Chris Chibnall, is one of Torchwood’s best writers. And since he’s also written the upcoming final two episodes, Weevils assume we’re going to finish out the season with a Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Sometimes cheaters prosper.

Fabulous episode.  Besides, it doesn't matter what was wrong with it, Ianto's smile when he says "He cheats, he always cheats" makes up for it.

And a jolly good recap. Humorous as always.

Though, I think there's a bit of name confusion going on in the last few paragraphs.  Nikki was clearing out Jonah's room, but you have Gwen, and it was Gwen lighting candles though you've got Rhys.

You're absolutely right about the errors toward the end. Thanks for catching. Chalk it up to late-season-recapper burnout on my part.

Not my fav episode...head scratcher.

This was one of those episodes that makes you think they had a deadline to meet and dusted this off from the "work in progress" bin.

It had it's sweet moments and an interesting premise...but it's a total "Why did they do that episode?"

Why in the world would Jack wanna keep this a secret? Well...they finally put 2 and 2 together...ladies, here's the situation and what has been going on. Jack being all cloak and dagger about it made no sense.

Why in the world were these victims kept in a shit hole? Seriously...they couldn't spare some paint, a few lamps and a dehumidifier?

Why in the world do the writer's of this show insist on making Jack and Ianto non-romantic? Gwen catches the two together and what's the first thing Jack does...he invites Gwen to join. Plus they weren't even together in a caring way...they were playing one of their "naughty games". It's all about the sex with those two.

Why in the world can Ianto not hold water? The boy cannot keep a secret...unless of course the secret is that his 10% human girlfriend is being kept alive RIGHT THERE AT TORCHWOOD.

How many times are we gonna have to see Gwen and Rhys argue about Gwen picking Torchwood/work over their relationship?

Why wasn't PC Andy naked in this episode?

Why can't naughty games be 'caring', too?

Well, it seems to me that Jack only kept it a secret from Gwen and Tosh. Ianto certainly knew, and from some of the looks Owen was giving Jack, he knew too. And I can guess why Jack didn't want Gwen knowing. The whole episode was an example of why he didn't want Gwen knowing.

How are the writers making Jack and Ianto non-romantic? Seriously, I see this said a lot and I don't get it. Jack is awkward and sincere in asking Ianto on a date (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). They kiss after a heart-to-heart (To the Last Man). Jack believes in Ianto even when the best technology claims he's a murderer (Adam). And they share personal history with each other that they keep private from everyone else (From Out Of the Rain).

How was their (aborted) sex in this episode not 'in a caring way'? Because Jack cracked a joke when Gwen interupted him? Would you rather he had yelled at her? That's not how Jack is - he teases and he flirts. It doesn't matter that he invited her to join in, because both he and Ianto knew she never would.

I'm guessing that Ianto told Gwen because he figured she was going to bother them all until she found out. Plus, he probably can see this from her point of view as well as Jack's.

I think one of the reasons

I think one of the reasons why Jack wanted to keep the hospice secret, and one of the reasons why it looks like it does is because it is Jack's private project, meaning the Torchwood powers-that-be don't know about it.

We still haven't been given any indication that Jack and Ianto's relationship is anything but physical.  I know some here keep saying they are boyfriends or dating, but aside from the first episode where Jack asked him out, which seemed to be a first, there hasn't been any other evidence to back this up.  In fact, in his interview with AE, Gareth David-Lloyd pretty much said that he didn't think that Ianto and Jack are romantically involved.

Megh's picture

I don't remember that

In fact, in his interview with AE, Gareth David-Lloyd pretty much said that he didn't think that Ianto and Jack are romantically involved.

Where did he say that? Did we read the same interview?

brenrose's picture

actually, regarding

"We still haven't been given any indication that Jack and Ianto's relationship is anything but physical." As  mentioned in other posts, BBC America's website has the missing pieces in the Captain's Blog. Personally, I'm finding the relationship to be nicely balanced between physical and non. I think the boardroom scene last week and the hallway scene in this ep, says "non-physical". Last Man Standings' scene + this ep's Hot Hot House says physical". so out of 11 eps: score <heh, heh:> is 2:2. ['course that's based on the scenes i'm recalling. i'd have to rewatch for correct totals]

Excellent Recap as always...

Normally I’d say that’s obvious code for sex, except I think with the two of them, they actually do go Weevil hunting. Which gets them all worked up for sex the way most couples use wine, hot tubs, and Cinemax After Dark.

ITA. And for me this is one of my favorite Janto moments of the season. Jack looked really excited to be going on his "date" with Ianto.

...just like that scene in A Beautiful Mind where Russell Crowe stands in the center of a room filled with his insane math ramblings. God I hated that movie.

If enjoyment of your recaps was enough, I've finally met someone who hated that movie! I thought I was the only person. I feel so validated now.

I don't know if you read the Captain's Blog over at BBC America, but it's always full of Janto goodness and this week was no exception.

Other Staff issues: Seeing Gwen experience it for the first time took me right back to when I first heard that terrible scream. After Gwen had gone home, I just held on to Ianto for a couple of hours, as tightly as I could.

Never happy without my Torchwood Recap

Honestly, I just LOVE these things!

So, where to begin. How about poor Andy dealing with the Welsh Dragon herself?

You know, Gwen has a tendency to go off like there's no tomorrow when somebody else fails to be attentive to one of her crusades. Yet here poor Andy is trying to consult with her on a child disappearance and she's more concerned about his failure to show up for her wedding! He (new backstory) apparently having been an ex-boyfriend. Yes, I'm sure that having her marriage rubbed in his face was something he was really looking forward to. Oh wait, no, it was Gwen that was looking forward to it. She's pissed he deprived her of the pleasure.

Meanwhile, back at Torchwood, I was wondering about Jack re-looping his belt. Jack, as we all know, lives in a bolthole under his office. Apparently, when not manning the tourist office, Ianto lives under Jack's desk. Interesting though that Jack is now actively Weevil-hunting with Ianto these days. Apparently they are now the Starsky & Hutch (Crockett & Tubbs?, Scully & Muldur?, Cagney & Lacey?) of Torchwood. "Move aside Gwen! Ianto and I are going Weevil hunting! (wink, wink)"

I thought that it was funny when Gwen was at a loss to explain to Nikki what her area of expertise is. I've been wondering about that too pretty much since the first season. We know she's good with printing documents and a rubber stamp. If Jack hadn't hired her she'd be working the mail room back at the police station. By the way, aren't the British trying to be carbon-friendly these days? Given the piles of LCD's they have down there was it really necessary to hang all those printouts?

BTW: Tosh must be a seething mass of rage and hatred by now. She slaves while Gwen goes home and plays Lady Marmalade with her hubby.

Who, I'm sorry, I disagree with you about. Rhys has been a freakin' saint throughout Gwen's tenure with Torchwood, and that's even allowing for the fact that because of the Retcon she fed him he can't remember that she was screwing Owen. Incidentally, when she said "There'll be no secrets in our marriage" I somehow suspect that this one wasn't counted, along with the no procreation thing. But in any case, poor Rhys has had to mold his life around Gwen's Torchwood addiction and I think he has a right to be pissed. Maybe he should take up with Andy instead.

Did I mention that I loved Andy rubbing Gwen's nose in the GPS thing? She's gotten so smug and arrogant (despite being useless with technology unless Tosh or Ianto is around). It was nice to see him bring her down a peg. That and the need for his help to get a boat underscores what I've been saying all along. By herself Gwen's about as useless as tits on a bull. The whole team's been carrying her all this time and now Andy's having to do it too.

I too did wonder about this special care facility Jack's got running. More jokes about the British NHS were doubtless getting tossed about when this first aired over there. Then I remembered that, despite his sexuality, Jack literally lives in a hole in the ground and by his standards this is probably quite tasteful.

As for your remark about "Gwen’s the Queen Bee of their clique-ridden junior high". DUH! I've been saying all along that she's like the most popular girl in school that everyone secretly hates. Great line though.

The resolution was actually good writing although, despite my hatred of Gwen, I think that Nikki was being unfair to her. What if Gwen had been a regular detective and it turns out that Jonah had been raped and carved to pieces by some mundane psychopath? Would have been the detective's fault for ruining her "hope"? If that's the case then the cops should never tell parents of lost children anything unless they find the kid alive so as to let them have happy fantasies.

Now that that's all out of the way: Janto!

I don't know where to put my emotions here. It was nice to see the two of them getting busy. That they were in the greenhouse and not in bed doesn't surprise me given Ianto's remarks about Jack's "avante garde" technique. I'm actually a little surprised they weren't on bungee cords hanging from the Pterodactyl's nest. But it definitely was hot and heavy.  I also loved the "He cheats, he always cheats." line delivered with a chuckle.

Ianto seems very familiar with Jack this episode, which is just as well because I think he may be an emotionally abused spouse. Did anyone else notice the amount of shouting, specifically barking orders or otherwise shouting for Cinder-Ianto to come serve him, there was this episode? I did think that the "I'll talk to him" was great and implies that Jack and Ianto are becoming closer than the rest of the team. But I can't help wonder if their's is an Edith & Archie Bunker relationship.

All-in-all a great episode! Thanks for recapping!

Fave Janto episode by far...

This was probably one of my fave eps of Torchwood, thus far, mainly b/c I really felt like this was the one episode where Jack and Ianto's relationship was completely out in the open. I loved that Ianto was the one to go and "reason" with Jack after the boardroom scene. I loved that clearly Ianto knows more of Jack's secrets than any other of the team. And, of course, the little make out session in the hothouse didn't hurt. I didn't watch the BBC America version--did Jack take off his shirt again after he said "work to do"? I also liked that after the showdown with Gwen, Jack's voice and demeanor softened, beckoning Ianto back into the room. That was really nice.

Ianto gets up to follow him, telling Gwen, “I’ll talk to him,” sounding like he and Jack are the parents and Gwen’s the daughter who’s disappointed Daddy by getting her tongue pierced or announcing she’s joining the Peace Corps. Aw...see...my parent's just threw me a going away party with strategically placed friends trying to convince me that going to Africa and living in a hut for two years wasn't a good idea. Didn't work.

The actress who played Nicki was quite brilliant as well--really sold the emotion there, and made me quite sad for what she was going through. The whole story was quite moving--really enjoyed it.

Another funny recap - thank

Another funny recap - thank you!

I just finished the second season today, and looking back I think this is one of the best ones. It deals with Gwen's character in a realistic way, not in the 'she can do no wrong' light that she sometimes gets.

This ep made me love Rhys even more, if possible. Yeah, I agree that line he gave her at the park was stupid - but the last scene made it obvious that he didn't mean it. I can't fault him for snapping at her, though.

I don't really think Nikki will stay away. If she had a borderline creepy closeness with her son, could she really cut ties just because he's been aged and emotionally scarred? But it was good character development for Gwen to have all her efforts thrown in her face.

And I mean that in a good way. I like Gwen.

Great recap

I began this episode annoyed by Gwen, especially for being so nasty to Rhys after hes been so supportive.

At the end I ended up being not so annoyed and liking this episode very much. Mostly because it has some real sci fi elements and it presents some interesting questions. After last week episode, I wasnt expecting something like this.

There were some questionable moments, like the crappy accommodations. But, is Torchwood Cardiff still cut off from the London branch? Maybe its a budget issue, remember the (hotel?) they put the time travelers in, nasty. But you do have to leave something to immagination.

The good thing is that it seems a turn around for the remaining episodes of the season.

That scene between Jack and Ianto was hot, I too decided not to see it so it was so very enjoyable. BTW, to me Jonah looked like Anakin in Episode VI just before he died.

Keep the hilarious recaps coming.

Not bad!

Wow… This episode was pretty good, tightly plotted, with a real emotional pull. (Not to mention the inclusion of a bit of totally unnecessary---but much appreciated---snogging.) Now this illustrates why I’m so fed up with Torchwood in general. It’s obvious that the writers can deliver a knockout script; so why are so very many of the episodes absolute nonsensical rubbish?

The closing scene with the mother really did get to me a bit; ah, call me sentimental. I think I would have written a different coda for this episode, however. I thought it was extremely, unnecessarily cruel to leave the mother in that state (and really, out of character for Gwen to do so), and would have ended it thus… After the mother’s emotional speech… Cut to Gwen checking back with her, asking her how she’s doing, and offering her a drink liberally laced with retcon. Of course the mother completely forgets everything she’s learned about her son. Fade to another meeting in the town hall, filled with people who have lost loved ones. Gwen and Jack are standing back near the doorway, unnoticed by the crowd. The camera picks out the mother talking with a group of others; they are all comforting each other, helping each other deal with their losses… The Torchwood folks slip out the door and walk away… And only then cut to Gwen having her heart-to-heart with Rhys.

There were only a few minor quibbles with this episode, some of which have been previously mentioned. Well, first off, it turns out that Cardiff has an incredibly and unusually high rate of disappearances---greater than any other city in the UK---and no one ever even noticed it until now?

I liked Gwen’s policeman friend (if I can be shallow, I thought he’s kind of cute---pity he’s not joining the team!). But, perhaps he’s not too bright. (Hmmm, dimwit policemen---perhaps part of the reason no one ever noticed how many people go missing in Cardiff.) Gwen takes off in the boat on her investigation without him, and leaves him fuming at the dock. Um, he knew exactly where she was going---why didn’t he just follow her in another boat? I would have done so; her actions would have ticked me off so much that I would not have simply waited behind.

Man, I guess the Torchwood organisation is on a tight budget, but couldn’t they have gotten more pleasant rooms to house the insane returnees? That little complex was dreadful; dank dungeons, walls dripping with mold and slime.

I was a bit confused as to how the returnees actually got back (from their other worlds) to Cardiff. Were they just spit back out by the Rift, about an hour or so after they left, but much aged and now insane? Does that mean that Jack personally picked up everyone who was housed at the complex on his own, since no one at Torchwood (but Ianto) seemed to know about it?

And there’s my biggest complaint. These abductions---and returns---are a pretty big part of the problems associated with the Rift. Why was not the entire staff aware of what was going on, and involved in the cover-up/clean-up operations? Why did Jack make it such a huge mystery? Okay, if there was no mystery I guess this would have been a very short episode, but still… It made no sense to me that this problem was not common knowledge among the Torchwood staff, and the relocation of the abductees part of their duties.

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...

Just a small note

After the talk outside the hot-house, as Ianto's going back in after having told Gwen there's a package for her, you can see that Jack's already started getting naked again. Work to do, indeed.

I don't get the whole idea that because Jack and Ianto aren't conventionally romantic, it's all about sex with them. If you read the Captain's Blog entries on BBCAmerica, you'll see several different bits where it's obvious that it's more than sex. Not everyone expresses love the same way - in my geek household, I'd be much more thrilled with an XBox 360 as an anniversary gift than a diamond ring. Just because Jack's not constantly sending Ianto flowers doesn't mean he doesn't care.

My 2 cents

Stuff I wrote before reading the recap : Stuff that I would have liked to seen developed further. Ianto’s motivation for going behind Jack’s back to give Gwen the GPS device. (Knock on Gwen for thinking it was alien high tech). Obvious that Ianto must have disagreed with Jack about what was happening. They must have argued in that scene in the hallway just after the boardroom meeting. Keeps within character: Ianto knows the most about the secrets of Torchwood and more than likely it has been his job in the past to spirit away these Rift Returnees. However, the “why” does he go against Jack is missing. Good scene with Ianto caught in the middle between Jack and Gwen, literally, after she catches a Janto moment. At first I thought that Ianto might have been upset with Jack about for making the comment about having Gwen take part in their naked hide and seek game. But second viewing showed that Ianto had already made his decision, as he had left the package on her desk before Gwen interrupted them. While this episode demonstrated the fallout from Gwen’s actions, we don’t see the repercussions that Ianto faces with his relationship to Jack for going behind his back (perhaps this is something the writers will explore in a future episode?).

Rhys! Got to love the poor guy. Honeymoon certainly lasted a long time. Three cheers for speaking up and putting Gwen in her place while on picnic under the tree. Rhys also keeps in character as he was called Rhys the Rant in the episode “Adam”, and I did like the small smile that crossed Gwen’s face while he was chewing her out. She really does love the big lug and his rants.

I’m coming around to Michael Jensen’s arguments about Gwen from “Something Borrowed”. She really is self-centred and selfish. It’s all about doing what she feels is the right thing to do and damn the consequences or anyone else’s opinions. If it feels right to her then that has got to be the correct course of action. I guess that was the lesson that she was to learn in this episode. And while she attempts to make amends with Rhys with candles and dinner, her breakdown and crying just felt to me that it was a ploy to bring it back to it all being about her again. Rhys you are a saint. So while the ending makes perfectly good sense and all, I was bothered by it. Another item for future development, has Gwen learned anything from this?

PC Andy gets more development and he seems like a concerned and caring guy. Had / has a thing for Gwen (going to cost you a lot of points with this crowd Andy). Actually the more I saw of him the less I liked him. The way he manipulates, cajoles and guilts Gwen into taking an interest in the case. He wants to use Gwen to advance his career by putting a word in for him at Torchwood. The way he worms his way into going on the boat trip. (Yell at Monitor Moment: “Don’t go for the tea you knob, she’s so going to ditch your stupid ass!”) Then the self-centred Gwen goes and ditches him. However, she soon enough comes crawling back when she needs him to vouch about Torchwood after she tells Nicky.---wait, so now Torchwood is back to being a secret organization? Or is Nicky the last living soul in Cardiff to know about them? --- Actually these two users really seem perfect for each other. Finally the perfect Torchwood couple, Gwendy!

Oh, and a question for Andy. Seven months?!! You’ve had the info that this kid maybe tied up in a Torchwood case (CCTV of Jack on bridge) for how long and you’re only going to confront Gwen about it now?? What the bloody hell took you so long? No wonder you were partnered with Gwen and are still stuck on the beat.

Electronic swipe cards with chalk and slate name boards? Can’t they afford nicer facilities for these poor people? Say, is that village that they filmed the old Prisoner series in Wales ? Is it not torture to keep these people so close to home and the love ones they can’t go back to?

Retcon pills. This is the problem I’ve had with them. It has been all too easy to sweep plot weaknesses and stuff under the rug with a dose of Retcon for a quick tidying up of loose ends. However, you come to a time when using it might have been the kinder thing to do for Nicky in the end and we get nothing. Of course we could debate back and forth about would giving her back her false sense of hope be the correct thing to do now that she knows.

Can’t understand Tosh this time. She should be telling Gwen off at the first scan job as she shows she knows how to do her job, and she (Tosh) was in Torchwood and doing that job long before (3 years) Gwen came on the scene. You don’t need to listen to her Tosh! Then when she comes up with the theory of the rift stealing people, instead of going to Jack with it she follows Gwen’s instructions and does that whole research and lets wallpaper the hub with missing people flyers! Again Tosh, Don’t listen to Gwen! Plus I’ve given up on counting how many episodes you can wear something plum coloured.

OK, reading the recap now : Missed Andy calling Jack “Mulder” could not make that out. Glad to see I’m not the only one with trouble hearing, your Weevil problem with Tosh. Nice catch with Jack’ excuse about the coffee shack! Like that. No, the last person using a vcr would be me actually. I liked the park scene, see above. Totally missed the creepy / clingy mother vibe that Nikki was giving off. Octobercountry, like your alternative ending!

good episode......

I actually don't have much to whine about, except I think Jack needs to handcuff gwen to a chair and let her know who is boss.

the constant "Oh, I need to do this because it's the right thing" act tires me to no end. as we see, her plan went both ways...maybe in one sense, jonah's mom got closure, but in another sense, she won't be able to forget that incident and it'll scar her probably the rest of her life. Other than that, nobody really bugged me this episode.

great recap as always. :-D

Selfish = Emotional

OK, I got kind of a weird vibe that equated emotion (Gwen being the heart) with selfishness (Gwen and everything in this episode), as opposed to Jack and Ianto just being sex, but then Ianto's puppy dog eyes saying "He cheats. He always cheats." redeemed everything about Jack and Ianto's relationship for me. And the fact that Jack walked back into the greenhouse and took off his shirt again was telling - coitis interruptus only last a couple minutes between these two. The other thing that got me - they had missing persons cards with barcodes, but then they marked them with a bingo pen if there was a negative rift spike? I cracked up with that, picturing little old ladies in the underground Torchwood lair waiting for Ianto to call out "I-17" and winning a pterodactyl as a prize. Seriously, it was a little too X-Files for my taste, though I can agree with Adjovi above - let's invite Andy to join naked hide-and-seek.

Great Episode

Thanks again Steven for all the hard work you put into the weekly recaps. You always point out something I missed the first time round. I'm glad you noticed too the great work put in by the actress portraying Nikki. She gave heart to the episode that's sometimes missing when the storyline doesn't go outside of the TW hub.

Jack comes across as rather callous during several points this season. Most notably when he brings back an unwilling Owen and then basically tells him to suck it up and deal with being the living dead. If Jack had just come clean with Gwen, things would have been much easier I believe. But then again, we wouldn't have had the story would we?

However, I think Rhys was right on the mark when he told off Gwen. He's put up with a lot from her since she joined the hub and I think he'd just reached his boiling point.

And yes, I think Ianto could use some on-camera tenderness from Jack. I have to side with the faction who says they mostly see only physical pleasure from Jack's side of the situation. Well I'll wrap up now.

But now hear this:

Everybody buckle up cause for the last two episodes it's going to be TWO VERY BUMPY EVENINGS.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.

From BBC's Captain's Blog

We offered Nikki, Jonah’s mother, amnesia pills, but she refused them. She said she didn’t want to go back to constantly hoping in vain. As much as it damaged her, at least she was now able to let go. She asked about giving the pills to the the victims, but they’re so badly damaged, the amnesia drug doesn’t work on them. That was the first thing I tried, when the first of them came through. -- Captain's Blog, Entry 24

For those wondering about the Retcon and Nikki. Interesting as it also contradicts what Nikki herself says to Gwen, but I have to think (if only to keep from hopping) that it's because Nikki was offered the pills later, after she'd packed up everything and had gotten used to the idea she could still be controlling and smothering during Jonah's good periods maybe eventually get over it, now that she had some degree of closure. Or something.

Of course, it didn't have to do with Nikki exactly, but everyone I know was thrilled by the blog's ending:

Wonderful recap for a wonderful episode. Btw, if anyone else like Ruth Jones as Nikki, I highly recommend checking out her show Gavin and Stacey, which she cowrites and costars in. She was also Myfanwy on Little Britain, and is an all-around wonderful actress to watch.

Not MISSED, quite...

Nah, I just didn't quote it. I figured Auntie Mame had quoted that bit about 10 hours before in an earlier reply, so I didn't need to repeat it. I was just answering a point unanswered.

I loved that part, though. It certainly helps give dimension to Jack & Ianto's relationship.

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

Not my favorite episode, although it certainly had its moments. Given the kind of pounding the last couple of episodes have gotten, I'm surprised to find everybody giving this one a pass. For my money, it was a bit too Gwen-centric and depressing. I got depressed all over again, just reading the recap. Gitmo? I'd never have made that connection, but I guess it's appropriate. Maybe Gwen can return and leave the occasional flower on Jonah's windowsill. By the way, do we know yet whether there will be a third series? I certainly hope so. Next week's episode and the season finale will blow you away.

As for Gwen, why don't you haters make up your mind? You bi-atch and complain about Gwen "not really being the caring one" and then when she pushes to find out the truth motivated by trying to do the right thing, even though it ends badly, you bash her for that, too. I think you're just being whiny. Kinda like Rhys. ;)

I suspect that people just

I suspect that people just wish Gwen could be caring but perhaps take a moment to think about how best to care, rather than just going off half-cocked. Personally, that's my usual problem with Gwen: even when the writers are showing her as caring, it's a somewhat arrogant, patronizing, "I know best" sort of caring. She's worse about that than Harkness is, and that's saying something.

Now that said, I think that Gwen (and, truth be told and everything granted, Eve Myles) was great in "Exit Wounds," and I'm interested to see the AE reaction to that episode.

Then again, I also don't consider myself a Gwen-hater. She's often annoying, and I'd often be happier with less Gwen, but I'd also be happier with a less-annoying Gwen who adds something to the team and to the show. I'm not really frothy about Gwen, and I'm fine with Gwen being the "heart" of Torchwood, if she could just show a touch of empathy along with that caring.

Not that Good

I didn't really get into this episode. I knew it was an episode that's supposed to be emotional, but I felt nothing. It failed in that respect.

"Random Shoes" from last season was a million times better, and that episode seems to be hated by quite a few people.

I guess all an episode needs to have to get a thumbs up from some people here is some Janto action. That's pretty sad.

I think the hothouse scene

I think the hothouse scene is one of the best Janto moments this season (and not entirely because they're shirtless, although WOW! Gareth's chest is niiiice!) because they can get right back to where they were (Jack with his shirt back off already) like Gwen was never there. And Ianto fixing them coffee (as Gwen calls) is so cute and domesticated.

And the Captain's Blog really does help. Jack having to hold onto Ianto speaks volumes (though I would like to see this onscreen) about their relationship.

I want to be a hero like Captain Jack Harkness, kicking butt and snogging anything with a pulse! Besides, then I get a sexy receptionist of my very own.

Recap had me in stitches for

Recap had me in stitches for the first part anyway. I'm sure family think I've gone mad. I loved this episode but it ends on a sad note.  Perhaps I wrongly took this line Ianto: He cheats. He always cheats as some horrible foreshadowing to be endlessly used in fanvids if indeed they do break up.

OMG! DON'T EVEN SAY THAT!

Take it back! I don't even want to think about that. Although, *heavy sigh* they really can't be together forever, can they? If nothing else happens, Jack is going to live forever. Ianto isn't. So they better make the most of what they have now. So, more scense like this one, please!

I know we all bitch about their lack of relationship development but I honestly think the writers are starting to work on it, so just wait. I hope they show us more next season.

fairly decent ep

excellent recap. :)
had missed the We've all/Weevil confusion. just glossed over it.  Also missed Jack's pant "readjustments" of past episodes. good excuse to rewatch this (otherwise iffy) season.

I thought it was a fairly decent episode; 'though I just can't get past the idea that it would've been over very quickly if one of 2 things happened:
1) Jack lays down the law; he is the boss after all. [Okay, so Owen disobeys Jack and he gets fired. Gwen disobeys but is allowed to stay?! I'd say it was unfair application of rules but for the very different situations.]
2) Jack just tells Gwen everything about the island.

The mom did creep me out a bit but after remindering myself that the events were 7 months after her son's disappearance, the creepiness left. I replaced it with the idea that the mom was getting a just a bit obsessed.
As for the facility, I thought it was a converted military bunker so wasn't expecting homey touches. 'Course we didn't see the whole facility.

Fortunately this episode balanced annoying, bossy Gwen (maybe that's how she took over in Jack's absence?) with not only Rhys but Andy. Made the ep tolerable.
Enjoyed Andy's return in this episode. Liked his asking about job openings. :D
Thought he should've have been less forgiving of Gwen since she did treat him like crap. I agree with other posters that throwing the drinks after the boat and then getting into another boat to follow would've been better. Especially as it would lead to us getting another "outsider's opinion" on Torchwood activities. Rhys is proving an excellent (unofficial) addition to Torchwood.(yeah Torchwood's Mickey Smith!) Rhys the Rant had reason to  this episode and it was nice to see that Gwen came around at the ep's end.

Janto: 'cuse me while I drool. :-D
Loved how Jack already had his shirt off when Ianto went back into the room. "work to do" - omg.  "he cheats. he always cheats." - perfect. Somehow it doesn't surprise me that Jack cheats. :}  jack's saying to Gwen "we could've used you an hour ago" did surprise me though as did NOT need the image of Gwen naked in my head. <<shudder>> Thanks, Jack. :-|
'kay, common sense time: Why wasn't the proximity alarm shown/heard in "Cyberwoman" turned on? I thought they'd be in the habit of turning on such a helpful device. Did they forget to install one when the Hub was rebuilt?
Hadn't read Captain's blog for this ep yet but having read them before, glad to know jack's committed to the Janto relationship. I'm fairly certain Ianto is.

And we got a revelation this week (not THAT one. I already commented on That one ;) The Hub does have windows!!! I was surprised at that. More hints/proof that they aren't much of a secret, perhaps?

Next ep's teaser:
This is the ep where we find out how Jack & others came to Torchwood. THough it doesn't look promising: The "I'm made of Glass" Owen is out in the field, again. (Jack is making soo many bad decisions. is he really 200+ yrs old? where's the 'wisdom' that should've been gained from such a long life?) Of all people to be near a bomb, "Death [doesn't quite] become [him]" Owen is not among them. I briefly hoped that what we'd see Jack doing the "human shield" bit for Owen but no - all summaries of this ep state that Owen is among the unconscious. How's he going to recover from any the brain/skull damage or the cuts from the flying debris? hopefully the answers are in the ep. We'll see. Ianto's story should be good.

Alarm?

Why wasn't the proximity alarm shown/heard in "Cyberwoman" turned on? I thought they'd be in the habit of turning on such a helpful device.

Do you mean the alarm on the door? If so, you must have watched the BBC America edit; in the original cut when Gwen opens the door, you do hear an alarm, and she calls out "Jack!" but they seem to be too preoccupied to notice. The American edit skips past that part.

yeah that one...

just re-watched (thanks youtube) and heard it; improves the scene. so it seems they weren't the only ones pre-occupied. 'course they had the better reason. :)

You crack me up. I love

You crack me up. I love reading your re-caps. One of your best lines is, "After all, why would he need to visit a coffee shack when he’s got a trained barista like Ianto on hand who’s only too happy to froth his cream whenever he’d like?" I got a sick pleasure out of this. I also was dumbfounded as to why Torchwood had labels with bar codes on them. I thought it was a bit overkill on the prop department's part. The Janto scene? Yea, I watch it repeatedly like a sick teenager. I'm not certain, but I thought that deformed Jonah asked his mother why she didn't marry, and she replied that as long as she had him she wouldn't be alone. But I could be wrong because I had trouble hearing the actor. Owen had a lot in this episode didn't he? I get really mad at people who take the sanctity out of marriage. The words "For better or worse" mean FOR BETTER OR WORSE. If I ever find "the one" I will imagine the worse possible thing that could happen in our relationship and if I can live with him through that, then I will marry him. Okay, there is my two cents. Long live Janto!

Jonah's mum

I heard it the same way you did, that Jonah had asked Nikki why she didn't marry, and she was the one who didn't feel lonely as long as she had him.

I don't know why, because all the points in the recap make sense, but Nikki didn't seem overly clingy to me. Maybe it's because I have a close relationship with my mum.

Scene I would have loved to see in "Adrift"....

I wish this scene that was described in the Captain's (b?)log at the BBC America site... I wish they had actually shot this scene:

Other Staff issues:
Seeing Gwen experience it for the first time took me right back to when I first heard that terrible scream. After Gwen had gone home, I just held on to Ianto for a couple of hours, as tightly as I could.

Is it my imagination, or are they trying to make as few scenes as possible that show Jack's vunerable side. For intance, in Starburst Magazine it was revealed that the scene where Jack asks Ianto out (in "Kiss kiss, Bang bang") was actually longer and showed more of Jack's vunerable side but they cut that bit.

Maybe they want to make Jack seem more mysterious and like he's always in control.. but personally I think they've made the character more two-dimensional this way. It also pushes Jack and Ianto's relationship into the background. I just wish they'd write Janto with the same openness as they write Gwen/Rhys and Tosh/Owen... which reminds me, can anyone tell me if if the last two episodes in this season are more Janto centered? I haven't seen them yet.

Janto!

Janto Janto Janto Janto! Who cares about the rest of the episode? (to be fair, it was a pretty good episode. Very emotional)

I completely agree with you Steven in that Jonah looked like Sloth from The Goonies! For me, it was a cross between that and a Sontaran.

For those of you saying the relationship is "non-romantic" (yeah I know other people have been opposing this view), how's this - in "Adam" Ianto said that Jack gave him meaning. I doubt he just meant hot sex with Jack ... though I'm sure that'd give me meaning too...

Shirtless Jack & Ianto scene

Just re-reading the recaps b4 the 5 night miniseries and am amazed that no one commented that in the beginning of the scene, both of them had their hands Moving Below the waist ROFL. They sure weren't just hugging or wrestling for top. or pulling their pants up.
