Ugly Betty Episode 201 Recap: “How Betty Got Her Grieve Back”

D’OH! I’m sure the right wing crazies will be pleased to see they’ve finally found a cure for gender confusion: all it takes is a gruesome car wreck and three weeks in a coma.

At Casa Suarez, Betty is busily making dinner but happy now that she’s snuffed the torch she’s been carrying around for Henry. She tells Justin she heard all about the fashion elf at work, but spoke to Daniel who said it would be okay for him to spend the summer at Mode as an intern. He OMGs a bunch and hugs her, and seriously, how awesome is Betty as an aunt? I truly hope all the Justins out there right now have an Aunt Betty looking out for them, don’t you?

Upstairs, Santos tells Hilda he needs to go now. She begs him to stay, saying she needs just one more day. He tells her she’s going to be OK, and then leans in to kiss her. Just then, Betty enters and asks if Hilda wants to come down and help make dinner. We see that Hilda is actually alone on the bed, sitting in the dark room by herself and crying. “He’s gone, Betty. That’s the first time I’ve said that out loud.” Betty runs to the bed and sits holding her sister.

I totally saw this coming but damn if I’m not completely sobbing at this point. I’m not crying, it’s just that I touched my contact lens after eating spicy chicken wings. Do you have a tissue?

Cut to the streets of Manhattan, where the Tucson express bus to New York has made its regularly scheduled stop, which is impressive since it seems to be the only bus granted special permission to go directly to Times Square and bypass Port Authority completely.

Senor Grubstick (aka Henry) gets off and looks around. Hey, I thought he and Betty were on a break.

Justin Fabulousness Meter this Episode (Scale of 1 to 11): 7

Justin becoming an intern at Mode is the best development on a TV show since Alexis Carrington marched into the courtroom on Dynasty. So I’m giving this episode a 7 only because we need someplace higher to go later on. I know the next few weeks will find Justin attaining even greater levels of fabulosity as Mode’s very own fashion elf.

Favorite "Betty" Line of the Night:

Claire Meade: "I’ll be dressed as a nun ... or a cat. I haven't decided yet."

If this was Doctor Who

she could have been both. There are cat nuns in the year 5 billion and something :D

Great recap!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of that despite just watching the episode a few hours earlier.

And INTERESTING what you had to say about the paparazzo - I totally did not notice that at all. I wasn't really paying attention to him anyway, but still.

The premiere was definitely awesome though. I could've done without the whole "Santos is alive but isn't" thing though. Just really messed with my emotions. Otherwise though, awesome episode. Totally on par with Season 1.

EDIT: I just realized I say "though" far too much. :<

Justin quoting Coco Chanel was genius!

He's obviously on the fast track to becoming the World's First Teenage Fashion Designer Sensation -- as this pic clearly indicates: http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/rids/20070821/i/r2266679510.jpg?x=380&y=263&sig=erUSRfK1ZnRiRsYL3idWrQ--

Awesome!

This is my favorite recap so far. Just the right blend of snide and sarcastic observation. Plus this cracked my **** up.

I love this show so much!

I love this show so much! Since I got spoiled that Kevin Alejandro was going to be in Shark, I knew how this would turn out but yes, I too touched my contact lens after eating spicy chicken. Anyway, I agree about Henry being introduced too soon. Although I think they never intended Henry to be a regular -- it's just that the casting director was so very competent that she got Chris Gorham to play him and voila: fan favorite. When they got so much positive feedback about him, they made a decision. Just like how they changed midway through about the mysterios bandaged woman and turned her into Alex/is, they added him to the cast and jettisoned Walter (although it's funny to have seen his name in the credits for a long time after)

So for reasons that don't

So for reasons that don't really exist and factors that are just kinda... well, also non-existent, I simply haven't found the time--er, rather, taken the time to get into this show. However, I can only ignore what is possibly the gayest show on TV for so long, before I have to watch it. I kick started it off with this episode, the first of season 2, and now I'm downloading season 1 as I write this. I'm kicking myself for not doing this sooner, but also pleased because it means I have a brand new show to promptly spend an entire day binging on! And it's faaaaaaaaaaaabulous.

aw, c'mon!

Why download from that i-service when you can rent from that n-service? Not that I really needed to rent, because I'd seen all the episodes when they aired, but the DVD has the shows as they were originally conceived (meaning the order they were supposed to have aired before the newtork started interfering and the producers had to compensate by shooting new scenes and recutting). The gag reel alone is reason enough to get the DVDs.

For reference's sake

Paparazzo is, in fact, the original singular (as portrayed by Walter Santesso in Fellini's La Dolce Vita); paparazzi is the derivative plural thereof.

 Just something I know… [/Grubstick]

So glad to see you recapping this, Steven!

coz I love your Torchwood recaps. Also great to hear you quote Flight of the Conchords.

I totally did NOT see Santos' fate. After crying so much at his death last season, I was happy to see him again, only to have him taken from me :(

I love that Amanda gets a storyline here, she's a great character. And having Marc by her side is an added bonus :)
