Ugly Betty Episode 206 Recap: “Something Wicked This Way Comes”Betty wistfully sits alone in the theater lobby … Henry wistfully sits alone in the audience … Daniel wistfully stare at Betty’s empty seat … Wili wistfully eats at her desk … Hilda wistfully tries on her High Beams uniform … A man wistfully approaches wistful Betty in the lobby… It’s Henry! They’re just about to kiss, when she sees a giggly Daniel and That Girl! as they head into a cloakroom that, like all rooms containing valuables in Manhattan, is kept completely unlocked and unsupervised since everyone in the city is on the honor system.
That Girl! is truly shocking me in this scene by using words like “ass” and “tush” as she ogles and gropes Daniel, who’s only too happy to play along. But then he spies Betty’s coat and, remembering Betty’s faith in his abilities, launches into this boring business pitch that actually seems to work on her. She agrees to give him their ad business, but then adds, “You’re a smart guy. And your tush is darling … But smart guys are turnoffs.” So I guess now mommies are free to be sexist pigs too. We’ve come a long way kids. Meanwhile, Betty and Henry, running to hide from Daniel, have managed to find their way backstage. Betty is worried they’ll be caught by the “theater police.” She’s right to worry. They can throw you in theater jail and sentence you to sit through Cats now and forever. But they realize that, at long last, they’re truly alone, and they start to kiss. Just then, there’s this loud clanking noise and they lift off the ground. Meanwhile, on stage, Wicked is in the “Defying Gravity” showstopper that ends Act One. The mechanical pendulum thing Glenda rides on comes down from the wings, with Betty and Henry perched on top of it. The audience and cast are shocked into silence, while Betty and Henry sheepishly wave.
Outside the theater, Betty and Henry are kicked out, banned from Wicked for life. While Henry goes to get a cab, Betty confronts Daniel, who’s angry Betty lied to him.
Betty walks away from Daniel, but when she sees Henry, realizes she can’t go through with seeing him and walks away from him too. Back at Casa Suarez, Betty cries and Hilda eats. You’d think given how upset her sister is, Hilda could maybe share dessert, but she’s just scarfing it down all on her own. And then Hilda says the one thing Betty is sick of hearing; she tells Betty she’s being stupid. But Hilda has a different spin on it. To Hilda, Betty is being stupid for NOT being with Henry. “There’s a man out there who loves you,” she says. “Go!”
Downstairs, Papi and Justin have another surprise for Hilda. They unveil a professional hair dryer for Hilda to use opening her very own salon. Realizing how they were able to afford it, Hilda says to Justin, “You sold the Merman?!” And then she hugs them both.
