Project Runway's Second Season Struts to an End
by Robert Urban, February 22, 2006
(Opening theme music - Fanfare for the Common Man) "Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety... the thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat..." No, sillies, it's not the Olympics-it's Project Runway's Season 2 finale! Bravo's mega-reality-hit Project Runway has already garnered record ratings and continues to grow week-to-week. The second season premiere was triple season one's, and Project Runway is now more often than not the #1 show on cable on Wednesdays. There is no denying the show is a smash. Tonight, as part of its season's overall grand finale, Project Runway offers two different special episodes. The first is Project Runway's “Reunion” episode airing at 10:00 p.m., ET/PT. Sparks will surely fly as both judges and contestants get to air their personal reactions to each other while watching the season in reruns. The show's producers promise comical and even arresting outtakes from episodes that did not make it into the original episodes. Additionally, contestants will share their thoughts on how the series has changed their careers and even personal lives. Bravo President Lauren Zalaznick also claims viewers who tune in for the reunion can expect “more than the chatty bitchfests that are the hallmark for sour grapes reunion shows.” Sounds charming. Frankly, none of the show's “reality” type candid camera infighting has ever reached the sensationalistic levels its producers and sponsors have obviously hoped for. And what is a reality show without conflict? Also on Wednesday, February 22 (11:00 p.m., ET/PT) Bravo is airing a one-hour documentary special, Project Jay. It features Jay McCarroll, the winner of the first season of Project Runway. It follows Jay's move to New York from his rural Pennsylvania town; his desperate search for affordable space in the city and his struggle to make it as a designer in the Big Apple. “Jay won an incredible chance to have an impact on the fashion world," boasts Zalaznick. "We are offering an inside look at the life of someone who is enormously talented and has an extremely bright future in fashion." Bravo may also be coyly offering us a glimpse of Jay's comeuppance. The high point (or low point) of the special is the drama that transpires after Project Runway princess Heidi Klum invites Jay to design her gown for the Emmys. Without giving away the ending, let's just say that Jay learns a lesson from La Klum in just how ruthless the spoiled, fickle world of high fashion can be. Indeed, making it in the city turns out to be way tougher than Jay originally thought. "There's no handbook for fame," he says, admitting that although he's now a celeb, he's still penniless. It turns out that McCarroll actually turned down the show's $100,000 prize and the chance to be mentored by Banana Republic designers. He did so in hopes of landing an exclusive deal with a licensing company. Now he's paying the price. |
