Project Runway's Second Season Struts to an End (page 2)
by Robert Urban, February 22, 2006 Although Jay is reportedly furious with Klum over the Emmy dress, there are inside rumors suggesting that Project Jay may turn into a full 12 episode series, not necessarily a good thing. Jay's ok in small doses, but this viewer finds his overweening and insufferably hip manner way less appealing than his fabulous creations. (Now if only an image consultant was included among all those prizes he won!) On Wednesday, March 1 (10:00 p.m., ET/PT), viewers will watch as Santino, Chloe and Daniel return to their hometowns to create their fall lines, which they will present before the world's fashion cognoscenti at Olympus Fashion Week in NYC. Naturally, we get a sneak peak at their collections as they work on them. Additionally, Project Runway's mentor/den mother Tim Gunn will visit each of the contestants at their homes. Then on March 8, the three finalists will face-off one last time. With a full line of their design, each will show on the runway at New York's Fall Fashion Week. Their work will be scrutinized by a live audience of media, industry elites and uppity A to Z list celebs. The guest judge will be Debra Messing. When the smoke clears, the new winner of Project Runway Season 2 will be crowned. So how do the three finalists rate at this point? Finalist Daniel Vosovic set a new Project Runway record with five challenge wins during the season. At first, the seemingly shy Daniel came across as a rather pale and mousy Midwesterner who seemed perhaps a bit in over his head. But his quiet charm, steady fashion temperament (and blossoming dude-licious good looks) slowly worked their magic on judges and viewers alike. By mid-season he was just about everyone's (including this viewer's) favorite to win. He deserves it as his fine work has been among the most consistent of all this season's contestants. Though seemingly innocent, Daniel played Project Runway's contestant/challenge game well. He knows his craft and never once over-played his hand. He may seem like a simple guy from the heartland, but this guy has traveled the world cultivating his talents as a designer. During one episode this season, Daniel spoke briefly, though touchingly, about his growing up being gay. He also developed an obviously close friendship with 5th place winner Nick Verreos that, at times, seemed like it could be more than just a friendship. In one episode, they engaged in a heartfelt mutual pep talk that ended in "I love you's" and hugs from both boys. Perhaps time will reveal more about these two. Just what are we to make of the unreal, uneven, and perhaps evil genius of Santino Rice? One thing is for sure. He's harder to eliminate than Rasputin himself. No amount of overdone, garish, ill-fitting “Santino'ed” fashion disasters has yet gotten him booted from the show. (Did the judges ever consider silver bullets?) Perhaps sensing his prodigious potential, and perhaps in awe of his promethean approach to design, the judges have apparently decided to just stay clear of him and let him move on each week. They seem helpless in his presence, like deer in the headlights. Yet they allowed this untamed creative lion into their own three ringed fashion circus and now have to deal with it. To his credit, Santino has the power to infuse a sense of worth and importance into a garment he designs. Like a sculptor, he seems to envision his final work from the start and merely cuts it out. It's as if he's tracing from an imaginary stenciled pattern. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he is already receiving offers of work. |
