Brothers & Sisters Recaps: Weeks 1-5 (page 4)
by Dennis Ayers Before we can get to tomorrow's date night, first we have to get through tonight's family dinner. Creepy Jonathan has prepared a casoulet, which is a French peasant stew. Everybody's impressed with the meal. Everyone except Nora, who still seems perturbed that Jonathan commandeered her kitchen without asking first. Dinner gets interrupted when a beeper goes off. Sara (Rachel Griffiths) and her husband trundle their daughter Claire off to the den to administer her scheduled insulin shot. (We found out in episode 3 that Claire is diabetic.) Sara and her husband are still not comfortable giving injections, prompting little Claire to start wailing in fear of the needle. Suddenly, Justin jumps up from the dinner table and runs over to them. He grabs up Claire, distracts her with funny faces, and gives her the insulin shot before she even notices. Everyone is really impressed with how masterfully Justin handled the situation. When asked how he knew what to do, Justin makes it sound like he learned his needle technique while in the army fighting in Afghanistan.
And here I thought he knew his way around a needle because he was a heroin addict! I'm just kidding. It's a really cool scene actually, because up until this point Justin has been a complete junky screw up on the show. Nice for his family to see another more heroic side of him. Kevin sums it up best.
Okay, we can move on to date night now. First up, we have Nora and David (Treat Williams) at the restaurant opening. Nora doesn't want to give David the wrong impression so she drives herself to the restaurant. Nora looks cute in her little black cocktail dress and push up bra, but she's talking mile a minute. Clearly she's nervous about the evening. Is this a date or just two old friends sharing dinner? Already off balance, Nora really gets thrown for a loop when she spies her brother Saul (Ron Rifkin) out on a date with her dead husband's mistress, Holly (Patricia Wettig). Nora proceeds to get really drunk on watermelon martinis, and you can tell that poor David is deeply regretting this date, or whatever it is. A few tables away, Uncle Saul and Holly try to ignore Nora and enjoy their dinner. We haven't seen Holly since episode 3 when Nora invited the poor hussy over to a family pool party and then, with the entire Walker family as witness, “j'accused” the crap out of her for sleeping with her husband. Ouch! Needless to say, there's some bad blood between these two. Still, Uncle Saul seems to have a soft spot for Holly. Or maybe he's just pretending. It could be that Uncle Saul is only trying to pump Holly for information about the missing 12 million that Bill Walker took from the pension fund. I don't have any proof, but I get the feeling that Holly is a real bad egg. She claims Bill Walker was the love of her life, but there's something sneaky and calculating about her. Maybe she and Bill weren't having an affair at all. Maybe she was blackmailing him and that's where the 12 million went to. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. At any rate, I hope we get some catfights between Holly and Kitty in the coming episodes. Physical catfights like Krystle and Alexis used to have on Dynasty! Oh that would be grand.
But I digress. We cut away to another restaurant where Kitty and Jonathan are chaperoning Warren and intern Amber. Why the hell did Jonathan agree to this evening? I mean, he knows that Kitty slept with Warren. The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Still, everyone is civil for clueless Amber's sake. However, when Amber excuses herself from the table to take a call on her pink Sidekick, Jonathan's gloves come off. He tells Warren he knows all about the one night stand, and he can't blame him for falling for Kitty.
Oh Kitty, this is so not your night. Your boyfriend is creepy and the guy you really like is totally dissing you. Finally we get to the scene we've all been waiting for – Kevin's date with Scotty. They are at some Indian restaurant swapping coming out stories. Flamboyant Scotty apparently came out while he was still in the womb.
Kevin proceeds to tell Scotty about his high school sweetheart Danny McCullough. Apparently, indiscreet Danny spilled the beans to his older sister. The older sister had a big mouth and was also best friends Kevin's older sister, Kitty. When Kitty confronted Kevin he had no choice but to come clean about being gay. And Kitty, despite being sworn to secrecy, the told the rest of the Walker siblings. This little anecdote explains a lot about Kevin. I was having trouble understanding how he could be so “out” with his family and yet so seemingly uncomfortable with his sexuality. Sounds like Kevin came out under duress.
Scotty finds it all very touching.
I'm absolutely loving this scene. For the first time I see some genuine chemistry between flamboyant Scotty and button-downed Kevin. It gets even better when Scotty leans over and unexpectedly kisses Kevin. It would be a perfect moment, really, except uptight Kevin seems really unnerved by the public display of affection. He clams up and becomes very distant for the rest of the dinner. |
