Brothers & Sisters Recaps: Week 8 (page 4)
by Dennis Ayers We flash back to the Walker Mansion on September 15, 2001. US domestic flights have just resumed, four days after the WTC collapse. Kitty has flown cross country from New York to be with her family in LA. They all hug her fiercely as she enters and ask about her trip. She seems dazed.
A short time later, Kitty is alone with Justin, telling him about her 9/11 experience. She appears to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, having been only six blocks away from the World Trade Center.
Justin is clearly very affected by Kitty's trauma. He wants to ease her pain and offers her a drink. We know how well that works for him!
I'm going to take a brief aside here to commend the show for how they are handling 9/11. We all remember what that day was like and how it affected us. These flashbacks might have been very maudlin and contrived but instead they seem entirely realistic. We flash forward again to the present and Justin's loft apartment. He is in bed, clearly wasted from whatever drugs he scored off the dealer in Echo Park. There's a persistent knock at the door and Justin rouses himself to answer it. His boss/girlfriend Tyler is there to check up on him. Justin tries to act coherent but fails miserably. He is a wreck and it's painfully obvious to Tyler that he has fallen off the wagon.
Just then, we hear the sound of a toilet flushing and Justin's former girlfriend, the heroin-chic Fawn, shuffles out in panties and a tee shirt.
Tyler, devastated, turns to leave.
The door slams behind Tyler and the look on Justin's face is just heartbreaking. Is it just me or is he the most loveable character on this show? You want to take him under your wing and protect him. Justin throws Fawn out. He wants to be alone with his misery. Just a guess here, but I see an overdose in his very near future. Cut to Sarah Walker's house and stepson Gabe's attic bedroom. Gabe is camped out on the bed reading and listening to his Ipod. Sarah knocks and enters. She's there to tell him that he is, indeed, a part of the family and she assures him that she loves him, even if he refuses to consider her as a parent.
It's a very touching scene. Gabe is moved by Sarah's words and opens up about the fight he had at school.
Sarah makes to leave but Gabe calls her back to ask about the crudely decorated plates Cooper and Paige were using at breakfast. Sarah tells him it's a tradition her Dad, Bill Walker, started. When Sarah was a kid, Papa Bill got tired of having to do so many dishes, so each Walker kid had their own personalized plates that they were responsible for washing up.
Suddenly her voice trails off. Clearly, the initialed plates have given her an idea about her father's secret bank account password. We cut to moments later at Sarah's kitchen table. She's in front of her laptop and she's at the login web page for her Dad's secret bank account. On a piece of paper she writes down the names of her siblings in the following order: Sara, Kitty, Tommy, Kevin, Justin (I guess this finally confirms the birth order.) Sarah draws a circle around the first letter of each name: “SKTKJ”. She tries this as the password but it comes back as invalid. She thinks a bit and then remembers potential half-sister, Rebecca. She tries a second time, SKTKJR. Voila! She's able to access the account. You'd think she'd be overjoyed, but her first reaction reflects her loathing of Holly.
BTW, shouldn't those forensic accountants Uncle Saul hired have thought of this? Just asking. We cut to contractor David's bachelor apartment. Nora wakes up in bed next to David. She seems disgusted with herself for being there. What, did she get drunk again last night? David is still asleep, his hand draped across her chest. Nora carefully extricates herself without waking him and makes a hasty exit. |
