Brothers & Sisters Recaps: Week 8 (page 5)
by Dennis Ayers A short time later back at the Walker Mansion. Kitty is in the kitchen having her morning coffee and picking a glass splinter out of her foot. It's a symbolic splinter, see? Apparently it's a tiny shard from Bill Walker's shattered orange juice glass – the one he broke back in the 9/11 flashback. It's meant to represent the pernicious harmful effects of 9/11. Either that, or Nora's slatternly housekeeping. For gosh sakes, does that woman ever sweep? Speaking of Nora, who should stumble in looking disheveled from her sleepover at David's?
Nora tries to pretend she was just out running errands but it's no use. Kitty recognizes the walk of shame when she sees it. Nora admits she slept with David the night before. Kitty has a wonderful opportunity to skewer her mom, but she resists. Instead, she tells Nora about Justin's letter from the Army.
Nora gives a little hiccup of fright. She hasn't forgiven Kitty for her conservative politics and her initial pro-war stance. She believes that's what made Justin enlist in the Army in the first place. Nora assumes the worst when Kitty tells her she's going over to Justin's apartment later to talk to him.
Nora tells Kitty she's going with her to see Justin. You know, all this moral support is touching, but so far, no one has given Justin any tangible help in getting out of being called back to active military duty. Correction. No one in his family. The drug dealer at least is working on getting him a fake passport. I still can't believe no one on the show has thought of the obvious: Justin can get out of this by telling the Army he's gay. He could just set up a bogus profile on manhunt.com and email it to his enlistment officer. How hard is that? Actually, I'm curious. How hard, really, is that? The number of military personnel discharged under the current Don't Ask Don't Tell policy seems to be on an uptick these days. Could straight men and women be avoiding recall to active duty by going into a sort of reverse closet and pretending to be gay? But I digress. Back to the show. The scene shifts to Holly's house. Sarah Walker has gone there to confront her father's former mistress again about Rebecca. Sarah thinks Holly lied to her earlier. The fact that Bill Walker used Rebecca's initial as part of his bank account password implies he thought Rebecca was his child. So why did Holly lie about it earlier?
This sets Holly back. Obviously, Sarah is onto something here. The women are interrupted when Uncle Saul walks in from the bedroom. Obviously, he stayed the night. Saul tries to explain, but Sarah cuts him off. She's waiting for what Holly has to say.
Holly resignedly spills the beans about Rebecca. The girl's father was Bill Walker, but she never told Bill that. Holly claims it was a selfless decision. She was afraid if she'd told Bill that Rebecca was his, he'd have been forced on principle to leave Nora and the rest of his kids. Holly didn't want that on her conscience so she lied and told Bill that Rebecca was the product of a one-night stand with a film director. Hmmm, don't know about you all, but I'm not buying what she's selling.
Sarah casts a beady eye on Uncle Saul before she storms out.
Ooh, that's harsh. Cut across town to Kevin's law office. He's on the phone talking to Scotty's answering machine. Kevin is laying his heart on the line here. Something he should have done earlier.
We split screen to Scotty's apartment. He's in bed hugging a pillow and listening to Kevin through the answering machine. Moved by Kevin's words, he finally picks up the phone.
Bummer. I was hoping these two would patch things up, but it sounds like, while Scotty may be ready to forgive Kevin, he's not interested in resuming their relationship. Kevin accepts the breakup stoically, but you can see he wants to cry. Poor Kevin. Alone again. **** Spoiler alert**** Not for long though. I hear he'll have a new love interest by episode 11.
This was a really touching scene and even got me a little teary-eyed. If this really is the last we'll see of Scotty, then it was a reasonable send off. And I'm really glad they stuck in that final business about the check. The only part of their breakup that struck a false note with me was Scotty's earlier refusal of the reward money. That was just plain idiotic. Glad to see he wised up a bit. The scene breaks to Justin's loft apartment. Kitty, Nora & Tommy burst in to find Justin comatose on the bed. They try to rouse him but he's not responding. Momma Nora gets hysterical and Kitty gets on her cell to call 911. Speaking of 9/11, we get another flashback to 5 years ago —the Walkers are gathered around the dinner table. It's a few days after the WTC attack and the family is still trying to come to grips with the tragedy. Momma Nora suggests that they pray. Bill Walker leads the family in prayer.
We return to the present. We get a brief montage of present-day Justin being wheeled into a hospital emergency room. Nora is frantic beside him. The scene fades to black and a “…To be continued” Darn. Forgot this episode was a two-parter. Looks like we'll have to wait until next week to find out if Justin pulls through. The preview clips for next week are brief but they offer some interesting tidbits. First, looks like Rob Lowe is joining the cast as a Republican senator and a potential love interest for Kitty. I'm guessing Justin pulled through from his overdose because it is hinted that Kitty asks “Senator” Lowe to pull some strings to get her little brother out of active duty. Hmm, that could make conservative pro-war Kitty a bit of a hypocrite, couldn't it? Well folks, we are at the end of yet another Brothers & Sisters recap. If this entry seemed somehow less snarky than my previous posts, sorry about that. Frankly, this episode was just so good that it didn't leave me a whole lot to poke fun at. Other than maybe Sally Fields' insanely bad wig in the 9/11 flashback scenes. Ah well, it's the price you pay for recapping a sophisticated, well written drama. See you guys next week! |
