Cut to Senator McAllister's office You'd think the Senator would have his main office in Washington, DC wouldn't you? But, conveniently, he does most of his work out of Los Angeles. Helps to explain the tan.

Senator McAllister (Rob Lowe) and Kitty are clomping down the hallway with coffee, having one of those walking conversations made popular by Aaron Sorkin on the The West Wing. I don't know about you, but those frenetic tracking shot scenes always gave me motion sickness.

McCallister: You're perfect for this job. The [Republican] party needs more honest people like you.
Kitty: Still, it doesn't make any sense. Why me?
McCallister: You know, I'm starting to think you have remarkably low self-esteem or you're relentlessly fishing for compliments. You can't possibly be that blind to your own value.

Kitty still has her doubts. How can he offer her such an important job virtually sight unseen?

McCallister: See these shoes? I bought them on the internet sight unseen. Never had a problem. I'm a very good judge of quality, Miss Walker. And how things are gonna fit.

He looks her up and down. He could be merely emphasizing his point. Or possibly he's appraising her physique. Or maybe he's imagining what her navy blue DKNY suit would look like on him. (Better, I think.)

Kitty: Did you just compare me to shoes?
McCallister: You started it.

Kitty cuts to the chase.

Kitty: You don't know me well enough to offer me the number two spot on your team.

McCallister considers this and then suggests she come out to visit him at his ranch in Santa Barbara so they can get to know one another better.

McCallister: I'll take a crash course in Kitty Walker!

Kitty misreads the invitation as a come on. The girl is awfully high on herself!

Kitty: I don't date potential employers – especially the ones who are going through a divorce.

A brief aside to note how this scene sort of echoes the opening scene with Justin and his pretty yoga instructor. However, in that scene Justin very clearly was trying to pick up the girl. In this scene, Lowe's agenda is much less clear. Not certain what his ulterior motives are for pursuing Kitty yet, but romance seems like the last thing on his mind.

McCallister: You'll have lunch and a professional conversation. If you consider that a date then your social life must be pretty lame.
Kitty: It is.
McCallister: That I can't help you with.

Cut to the Walker Mansion. Kevin Walker is confronting Kitty over the McCallister job. He's shocked that she would even consider going to work for a Republican Senator who voted in favor of a constitutional ban to prevent gay marriage.

Kitty: There are lots of people in the world, for instance me, who have no problem with gay people but still believe that marriage is fundamentally a religious institution that has nothing to do with the state. And that does not discount civil unions or domestic partnerships….
Kevin: Oh come on, Kitty. That's a cover that people like you provide for people like him, who hate people like me!

I thought that was very well put, and totally agree with Kevin's take on the matter. But Kitty scoffs at him for making the whole thing “personal.” Kevin replies that someday, when he's mature enough, he actually wants to settle down and get married. The issue is personal by its very nature.

Kevin: Don't take this job Kitty, I'm warning you.

You should listen to him, Kitty. You really should.
