Cut to downtown LA offices of Senator Jack McAllister. Kitty has just arrived for her first full day at work and to meet the other staffers. Kitty can't help but notice that the other employees are giving her a cool reception.

Male Staffer: Between you and me, some of the staff are concerned about you coming to work for us but, uh, so long as you're discreet…”

Another office worker, Noreen, shows Kitty to her sad little windowless office. She too is brusque. Kitty demands that Noreen spill the beans – why do the other employees seem to have a problem with her?

Turns out, everyone thinks she and the Senator are having an affair.

Now I wonder how that little rumor got started? Could the Senator be promoting the rumor himself? If so, what possible motive could he have?

Noreen: (Jealous and barely able to get the words out) Personally, I think you make a cute….couple.
Kitty: What? Couple? No coupling. There is nothing going on between the Senator and me.
Noreen: I get it. You want to keep it on the “down low”
Kitty: What can I say to you to make you understand that I'm not involved with the Senator? If you don't believe me you can ask…my boyfriend.”

That seems to put Noreen in her place. As she leaves, Kitty tells her to “feel free to spread the word” that she has a boyfriend and is not involved with the Senator.

The only trouble is: Kitty doesn't have a boyfriend at the moment. Her little white lie puts her in a quandary. Good thing she held on to that business card from Elise, the executive matchmaker. She pulls it out of her bag. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Cut to the Walker mansion. Kitty is waiting around for a fax – a matchmaking questionnaire from Elise. Too bad for her that Nora intercepted it. Momma Nora confronts Kitty with the fax pages.

Nora: Oh Kitty, you don't need a dating service. There are other ways of fulfilling your physical needs. There are electrical things….”

Yikes, did Sally Field just tell Calista Flockhart to go get a vibrator? I think she did.

Kitty: No! Mother, please! (embarrassed) Oh somebody just kill me.
Nora: Okay, all right, if it's not a husband, if it's not sex then why….
Kitty: I need a beard! I need some arm candy. Somebody's picture I can put on my desk because everybody in my office thinks that the Senator and I are dating.

Okay, taking an aside here to mention the irony in Kitty's need for a “beard.” Doesn't it seem like she herself is a beard? Last week she questioned why the Senator wanted to hire her in the first place. We never got a good answer. My take was that the Senator was a closet case and he needed Kitty around to create the impression that he was dating a woman. I still think that, though I seem to be in the minority on that score. But I digress.

Cut to the gym. Kevin is working out again and can barely contain his excitement when his new gym buddy, Chad Berry, shows up. Chad shows off his new “kicks” and tells Kevin he has his pair in his locker.

Chad: You need to break them in though. What are you doing tomorrow around eleven? I thought maybe we could go for a hike.

Normally Kevin would be at his law office (or over at Walker Foods perusing MySpace pages). But for a hiking date with Chad Berry? He's more than willing to clear his schedule.

Chad: I know this great off-leash trail we can hit.
Kevin: Uh, I don't have a dog.
Chad: I do. A pug named Lola. And she's getting pretty fat.

Kevin smiles to himself. Obviously owning a fat pug named Lola is a clear sign you're gay.
