MAYBE NOT JUST YET
Sheryl Swoopes’s announcement she is a lesbian has sent speculation through the stratosphere about the coming out of a gay male athlete. Greg Stoda over at the Palm Beach Post says male gay athletes shouldn’t fear coming out. But Ian O’Connor at Fox Sports thinks that maybe athletes coming isn’t such a hot idea. Meanwhile, the Boston Herald talks to some current and former Celtic stars who also think the idea might not be such a good one.

Unfortunately, some gay blogs are making the Celtics out to be a hotbed of homophobia when in fact both Doc Rivers, the coach, and Robert Parish, a former player and now a member of the team’s community relationship department, had positive, if realistic, things to say about the topic. Sadly, both men might be right about the time not being right. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine when the “right” time might be.

RAFE VERSUS CLAY: THE GAY SMACKDOWN
Now that’s a reality show I’d like to see. It’s been a few weeks since I last checked in on the gay contestants over at Survivor: Guatemala and The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. Both Rafe (Survivor) and Clay (The Apprentice) are still in the running, although if I were a betting man, I’d wager on Rafe to last a lot longer than Clay. The fans over at TelevisionWithoutPity.com have much to say about both contestants, and if I were Clay, I think I’d stick with reading the Wall Street Journal. Many viewers tend to find the hunky Texan arrogant and irritating, and more than one is surprised he hasn’t been fired already. Rafe, on the other hand, is becoming something of a fan favorite. Yes, he’s often described as dorky, but it seems to be meant affectionately and he’s also described as sweet and decent–sort of the anti-Richard Hatch. Speculation is that Rafe will go deep into the game. But the best news? To my mind it has to be the fact the neither men’s orientation hardly rates a mention. Now that’s the kind of reality I like best.

TV TIDBITS
Online gossip has been running feverish about which character on Commander in Chief was going to be outed as a friend of Barney. (Barney Frank, that is. No, not Barney Fife from Mayberry R.F.D. You know who I mean. The gay congressman from Massachusetts. Come on, people!) Speculation had centered on Geena Davis’s hunky son, played by former reality contestant Matt Lanter, but official word (from an ABC press release, no less) has it that it’s going to be Anthony Azizi's Vince, the Palestinian-American aide to the president. Vince will not only be outed on the Nov 15th episode, but it will be revealed that he’s HIV positive. And in a complete stretch of credibility, the evil Republican played by Donald Sutherland will try and use the information against the administration. Come on—who would ever believe a Republican trying to smear someone?

And over on Everwood, spoiler sources say one of the characters already on the show is going to be revealed to be gay (and no, it's not Reid). Speculation is running hot and heavy that its teenage piano prodigy Kyle. No word on whether or not the evil class president will try and take advantage of the news.

THIS WEEK ON DVD
TLA video has a brand new foreign flick for anyone not currently residing in Wyoming. Wild Side won the prestigious Teddy Award for the Best Feature Film at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival and tells the story of a three-way relationship between a Russian immigrant, an Arab hustler, and a transgender woman. Don’t worry, Sandy, you won’t find any of them in Wyoming.

Now I’ll shut up so you can have the BEST. GAY. WEEK. EVER!

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Gay. Week. Ever., or read previous installments here.
