Best. Gay. Week. Ever.
by Sarah Warn

A weekly column highlighting gay and bisexual men in pop culture

Friday, May 6, 2005

Note: Thanks to all of you who have been sending in news items for me to include in this column each week. Keep 'em coming! The rest of you can join the fray by emailing any relevant info as you come across it each week to editor@afterelton.com. Thanks!

TV ROUNDUP
There was very little for gay men on TV this week, since Eyes is now officially on hiatus for several weeks, and our favorite queer devil Andrew was missing from this week's Desperate Housewives episode. Oh wait: there's still Dan on The Inferno 2, and last week a gay man was killed by a homophobic cop on Law and Order: Trial by Jury. Yeah, it's slim pickings these days.

GLAAD AWARDS
Several popular gay TV shows and movies were honored at the GLAAD Awards in L.A. last weekend, an annual event that honors contributions to gay visibility. Winners of this year's awards included Six Feet Under (Outstanding Drama Series), Jack and Bobby (Outstanding Individual Episode), Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and The Real World: Philadelphia (Tie for Outstanding Reality Series), and Kinsey (Outstanding Film - Wide Release).

At the New York event earlier this year, awards were also handed out to Will and Grace (Outstanding Comedy Series), Bad Education (Outstanding Film - Limited Release), and the Scissor Sisters (Outstanding Music Artist), among others.

YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY
Joanne Peterson, the assistant to former Beatles manager Brian Epstein, alleges in her upcoming memoir There's a Beatle in My Closet that Epstein had an affair with one of the Beatles. She's staying mum on which Beatle it is until the book is released, but my vote is for Beetle Bailey. I mean, in 50 years, have you ever seen that guy with a woman? Think about it.

MTV MOVIE AWARDS
MTV announced the nominees for its annual MTV Movie Awards, and the gay-inclusive Mean Girls was nominated in the Best Female and Best On-Screen Team category. Sadly, it didn't get nominated in the Too Gay to Function category, 'cause there isn't one yet--but there's always next year!

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Gay. Week. Ever. and read previous editions here.
