Best. Gay. Week. Ever.
by Sarah Warn
A weekly
column highlighting gay and bisexual men in pop culture
Friday,
June 17, 2005
MOVIE
ROUNDUP
Chris Terrio's
The Heights opens this weekend in limited release. About a group
of New Yorkers in the theater world, the drama includes Glenn Close as
a theater diva, and Jesse Bradford as a gay actor.
Queer
Eye's Carson Kressley plays a gay waiter in the Hilary Duff-Heather
Locklear vehicle opening this weekend, The Perfect Man. And in
case anyone's wondering, no, he's not the title character.
THE
SHOW GOES ON IN VEGAS
Elton John has renewed his Las Vegas show through 2008. The show, called
"The Red Piano," has been playing at Caesars Palace's The Colosseum
since February, 2004. Last year, the show grossed over $40 million, with
tickets averaging around $158 each.
GLAAD
AWARD TO MAPA
This week
at its Media Awards in San Francisco, GLAAD gave openly gay actor Alec
Mapa (Half & Half ) its Davidson/Valentini Award, which honors
an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individual who has made
a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community.
In accepting the award, Mapa thanked the restaurant staff where he worked
in high school. "The staff who worked in this restaurant was gay--and
not just gay, but gay. Gay, gay, gay. They gave me the courage to be the
person that I am. And I thought it would be unacceptable for me to be
in the closet professionally when I'd benefited so much from these men.
So when you honor me tonight, you honor every single out, proud, gay and
lesbian person I've ever known."
TAB
TELLS ALL
The upcoming
memoir by actor Tab Hunter reportedly includes details on Hunter's two-year
affair with Tony Perkins, and his fling with Rudolf Nureyev, and the price
he paid for staying closeted, according to New York Post columnist
Liz Smith.
EVERETT
BEING EVERETT IS WRONG
"Gays
being gay is wrong," Chicago White Sox designated hitter Carl Everett
told Maxim in a new interview for their July issue. "Two
women can't produce a baby, two men can't produce a baby, so it's not
how it's supposed to be. ... I don't believe in gay marriages. I don't
believe in being gay."
Let's just
pause for a moment on the grammatical and logical flow of the statement
"gays being gay is wrong." That tells us pretty much all we
need to know about Everett, now doesn't it?
That's
it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best.
Gay. Week. Ever.
