The
woman is hilarious, not to mention an up-and-coming gay icon.
Her reality series, as well as her stand up special, Kathy
Griffin...is not Nicole Kidman, shows her to be witty,
funny, and best of all, wildly self-effacing. Her riffs on
Oprah ("I ain't gonna be no slave!"), Streisand,
and Clay Aiken will have you rolling on the floor of your
media room.
Even
more fun for me is seeing her "gays", best friends
Dennis Hensley and Tony Tripoli, appear on the show. Dennis
has been a friend of mine for many years and it's great to see
him have this kind of success. Dennis is an accomplished funny
man himself, having penned the comic-novel Misadventures in
the 213 as well as the very funny Screening Room. In addition,
Dennis co-wrote the Antonio Sabato indie-flick, Testosterone.
Dennis is also blogging
about his star turn on Kathy's show or you can read more about
him at dennishensley.com.
MORE
REALITY GAYS
The contestants in the Martha Stewart edition of The Apprentice,
which premieres September 21, were announced this week,
and among the 10 women and 6 men vying to be America's next
domestic goddess are two gay men, according to the New York
Post. Because what's a cooking and decorating show without
some gays in the house?
RYAN
CARNES PLAYS GAY. AGAIN.
This
week's soap
column at TV Guide reports that "General Hospital's
Lucas — the adopted son of nurse Bobbie Spencer and Dr.
Tony Jones — is about to come out. Yes, really! Per the
new issue of TV Guide magazine, Lucas' nosy roommate Dillon
will soon suss out the hunky teen's sexual orientation."
Lucas is played by none other than Ryan Carnes who played gay
in both Desperate
Housewives and the indie gay comedy Eating
Out. This is one straight guy (Carnes is an
avowed heterosexual) who clearly understands the value of his
gay fan base.
I GUESS SIX FEET UNDER WAS JUST TOO LIGHT
Showtime
has signed Michael C. Hall (David Fisher on Six Feet Under)
to star in the pilot for the new series Dexter, based
on the novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay.
Michael will play Dexter Morgan, a Miami police detective with
a quirky after-hours hobby: working as a serial killer who only
offs bad guys. Hmm, I thought the word for that was "vigilante".
I guess after five years of playing happy-go-lucky David with
all those light-hearted story lines, Michael wants something
with a bit of an edge to it.
Showtime
has a second pilot with gay connections, Filthy Gorgeous.
Filthy follows the lives of a group of highly paid
male and female escorts, as well as their clients. Oscar nominee
Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) penned the pilot, drawing, no doubt,
on his own experiences with escorts as documented in his memoir,
Blue Days, Black Nights. I can't wait. And by "can't
wait," I mean, "you couldn't pay me enough to watch
it."
FUNNY
HOW THE ONLY GAY BOY BAND SINGERS ARE IN THE UK...
A member of the popular Irish boy band Westlife--which has had
12 number-one singles in the UK since 1999--has come out. Singer
Mark Feehily told British newspaper The Sun this week
"I am gay and I'm very proud of who I am," adding
that he's happily dating Kevin McDaid from boy band V. He was
already out to his bandmates, family and friends, and said "I'm
not worried about how people react because I'm happy being who
I am." Hear that, Clay?
NOW
THAT'S WHAT I CALL FAMILY VALUES
In an interview this week on the MTV special All Eyes on
Kanye West, hip-hop artist Kanye West spoke out against
hip-hop's practice of making fun of homosexuality and using
"gay" as a put-down. “Hip hop was always about
speaking your mind and about breaking down barriers, but everyone
in hip hop discriminates against gay people,” said the
Grammy winner. He admitted he was guilty of being homophobic
himself when he was younger, but finally saw the error of his
ways when his cousin came out to him. "It was kind of like
a turning point when I was like, `Yo, this is my cousin. I love
him and I've been discriminating against gays."'
WHY
USE THE OBVIOUS EXPLANATION WHEN THE CONVOLUTED
ONE IS SO MUCH MORE LIKELY?
Next
month will bring the release of an officially sanctioned biography
of actor and English Lord, Sir Laurence Olivier. Olivier, one
of the most renowned actors of all time, has long been rumored
to have had same-sex affairs, most notably with Errol Flynn
and Danny Kaye. Not so says author, Terry Granger. "There
were very affectionate letters between them and Larry had a
camp side, but he affected this partly because he was so sure
of his own sexuality," said Granger. Yeah, right. Straight
men love showing their "camp" side.
It
never ceases to amaze me the lengths straight people will go
to in order to deny someone famous might have been gay. The
Greek government threatened to sue Oliver Stone for suggesting
Alexander occasionally got down with Hephaistion. And even though
as president, Abe Lincoln occasionally shared his bed with a
military officer, they were, according to straight historians,
just "bundling", the colonial era practice of sharing
a bed to stay warm. Well, duh! What was I doing thinking Abe's
sharing a bed with a man meant something? Everyone knows the
Lincoln White House never could afford firewood.
