Best. Gay. Week. Ever.
by Michael Jensen
A weekly column highlighting news about
gay and bisexual men in pop culture.

YOU MISSED ME! YOU REALLY, REALLY MISSED ME!
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the number of folks who wrote in (or posted) about their concerns that BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER was gone for good having been replaced by that fresh-faced ingénue, BEST.GAY.DAY.EVER. Well, have no fear; there are no All About Eve shenanigans going on here. BGWE needed a little break and went home for Thanksgiving.

BGWE reports it had a wonderful time in Albuquerque visiting with family. BGWE's mom, Dear Abby, was her usual cheerful self, while dad, Towleroad, offered BGWE plenty of advice on a wide variety of matters. (It seems BGWE has a thing for a little column over at Sports Illustrated, but isn't sure if it's gay or not.) Big brother, Queerty, was there for Thanksgiving dinner along with his ladylove Miss Manners. BGWE reports both had a little too much to drink and started arguing about who had a wider readership. Miss Manners finally stormed off in a huff, but not before complimenting Dear Abby on the pot roast, stabbing Queerty with the correct salad fork, and politely excusing herself.

BGWE's big sister Popcandy also drank too much, took off her top and started yelling, “Look at me! I'm the star of Blogs Gone Wild!” Then cousin AskAusiello started making out with his date Savage Love when Savage Love's ex-boyfriend The Ethicist suddenly burst into the house and attacked AskAusiello before breaking down into tears. BGWE took The Ethicist to see the new Bond movie and soon Savage Love was completely forgotten.

I took this joke too far, didn't I? I knew it. I never learn.

Anyway, Best.Gay.Week.Ever. is back and ready to rumble.

EDWARD R. MURROW WOULD BE SO PROUD!
Speaking of gay blogs, the self-anointed Queen of All Media is thrilled—just thrilled —that 3.6 million people visited his website Wednesday. And by what journalistic endeavor did Perez manage to get so many folks to drop by? Did he spend hours and hours digging through data to uncover an important story? Did he work for days on end to convince a source that Perez was reliable and that the information he wanted to publish was vital to securing gay and lesbian rights?

No, he published photos of Britney Spears' panty-less woo-woo as she climbed out of a car.

Give that man a Pulitzer!

In case you don't recall, this is the same man who claims he's making the world a better place. Um, how exactly? The only person I find more contemptible than Perez for publishing these photos (he did the same thing to Lindsay Lohan) is the photographer who took them. Sure, sometimes things get caught on film inadvertently. That doesn't mean you sell—or publish—the resulting photos. And clearly this photographer knew exactly what he was doing as he snapped away like mad.

It's almost enough to make me agree with Michael Medved about the coarsening of our culture. Thanks for that, Perez. On the bright side, Jossip.com reports that Perez's new show on VH1 is a no go because it “sucks”. Aw, isn't that sad?

WORLD AIDS DAY
December is the perfect month for World AIDS day as this is the time of year we're supposedly thinking about our fellow human beings. Frankly, when it comes to AIDS, we're not doing enough thinking, period. The World Health Organization released new statistics this week that show in thirty years, AIDS will have become the number three killer world wide. By 2036, 138 million people will have died from the disease. That figure is simply staggering especially when you consider that HIV is actually hard to catch and easily preventable. Well, easily preventable when you don't have religious and political leaders claiming condoms “don't work” in stopping disease or pregnancy.

Events marking World AIDS Day include the release of 3 Needles starring Lucy Liu, Shawn Ashmore and Stockard Channing. 3 Needles tells the story of AIDS today through different storylines. You can read our interview with Needles director Thom Fitzgerald and star Lucy Liu here.

BET has scheduled a whole slew of programming aimed at the African-American community, which suffers disproportionately from the disease. Programming includes special episodes of The Parkers, Girlfriends, and the special The Down Low Exposed. Visit BET.com for more details.

And Towleroad has four PSAs made by four different actresses as part of the Look/Listen/Love/Respect campaign.

No doubt Perez Hilton will be devoting his vast power to the topic as well. Unless somebody goes out tonight without underwear, that is.
