SHE'S A GIRL AND A FRIEND. THAT DOESN'T MAKE HER A GIRLFRIEND
Concerned readers have written asking me about reports Jake Gyllenhaal is dating Olympic snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler. Relax people. This is the same media that reported Bush actually read Theodore Rex (a biography of Theodore Roosevelt). Jake and Gretchen are just friends. In fact, we had her over for dinner last week. (Jake does a mean lentil soup.) I confess that once or twice I did think Gretchen was flirting with Jake a little too much. So I hired a couple of thugs to break one of her snowboards. I'm sure she got the message.

TYLER GETS LUCKY, SVETLANA GETS EVEN MORE ANNOYING
This week's episode of MTV's The Real World centered around Tyler, the gay roommate, and his one night stand. The episode had pluses and minuses, but I'm happy to say they were mostly pluses. On the minus side was Svetlana's endless gagging about having to watch two people have sex right in front of them. (Maybe that could have been avoided by not spying on them, you perverts.) It was also a bit much watching Tyler talk about, and rate, his hook-up as a side of beef. I'm not saying it wasn't real—but some things are better kept private.

On the plus side, Tyler made it clear he wasn't a hook-up kind of guy, and except for the dimmer-than-Star-Jones Svetlana, the other housemates were pretty laid back about the whole thing. I especially liked the straight boys' reactions that basically amounted to “Score, dude!” Best of all, the show clearly put Svetlana's Neanderthal views of gays front and center as something to look down on.

WAS THE BEAVER GAY?
No, I'm not talking about Jerry Mathers on Leave it to Beaver. I'm talking about Tuesday night's season finale of Veronica Mars. After many twists and turns, it was finally revealed that the show's villain was Cassidy “Beaver” Casablancas. The Beaver caused many gays' gaydar to ping repeatedly, what with his well-groomed appearance, bookish smarts, and inability to get it on with his girlfriend. Our own Brent Hartinger critiqued the episode and the series here, but I've found it fascinating how few straight people are even open to the idea Beaver was gay. I haven't quite puzzled out why that might be. Mostly I suspect that before he was revealed as evil, many viewers sympathized and identified with him. And since they're straight, then Beaver must be, too.

YOUR BUTT AIN'T SO BAD EITHER, JOHN
John Barrowman made his debut last Friday as the bisexual Captain Jack on Doctor Who. While the show quickly established Jack's attraction to women, it also made it clear he digs guys as well. When Captain Jack admired a woman's derriere, a soldier standing nearby misunderstood, thinking it was his bum to which Jack referred. Jack clarified the mistake, then took a look at the fellow's tush, and remarked that he liked it quite a bit, too. Then he patted the soldier's bum, grinned rakishly and took off. Best of all, the soldier smiled a little, as if flattered.

A QUEER DUCK, A CHANGEABLE COVER, AND DAFYDD
No, that's not the punch-line to a joke; just a cheap gag for me to talk about three upcoming DVD's. Up first is Queer Duck of internet fame. I still remember back in the stone age of the internet—that would be 1999—when Queer Duck made a huge splash online. Well, now comes Queer Duck: The Movie coming out on DVD July 18th. Written by an Emmy winning writer from The Simpsons, the DVD includes animated shorts, fifteen new songs, and all sorts of other fun, silly stuff.

Transamerica hits DVD shelves next week (May 23) and the cover is stirring up a wee bit of controversy as it features two versions of Felicity Huffman. Using an overlay that changes depending on how you hold it, you either see Felicity looking more like her Desperate Housewives self, or how she appears in Transamerica. Speculation abounds about who came up with the design and why. It all feels a little creepy like the movie is saying transgendered Felicity is too unattractive to look at for long. Who knows for sure, but I have to wonder if Nicole Kidman (The Hours) and Charlize Theron (Monster) aren't wondering why their DVD's didn't show their miraculous transformations. On the other hand, they did get Oscars.
