Both Guillen and DePetro went out of their way to explain that by "faggot", they didn't mean gay men, but rather, in Guillen's case, men without courage, while DePetro meant "sissy boy". Gee, thanks for clarifying that. I feel so much better.
Let me make this very simple for all straight folks. Much like the "N" word is off limits to white people, I declare the "F" word off limits to straight people (unless you have written permission from your best gay friend). I don't care if gay men are the furthest things from your mind when you say it. I don't care if you intend it to mean super, hot, stud or brilliant editor of AfterElton, you are NOT ALLOWED TO USE IT. Life will be much simpler if you kept that in mind.
And hats off to WRKO for suspending DePetro.
BECAUSE GAY TRAVEL IS SOOOO SCANDALOUS
The Travel Channel recently did a show called Gay Getaways, all about gay travel. The episode touched on where gays go, why we go there, and what issues are specific to gay travelers. And it also included a Viewer Discretion warning tag before the episode and during each commercial break. I appreciate the Travel Channel's doing such a good job on the special, but I really have to question the warning. There was nothing the least bit offensive in the episode, and I'd wager the network has carried shows about spring break a whole lot more salacious.
But what if I'm misinterpreting the Viewer Discretion tag? Maybe it was meant to warn middle-aged straight guys not to watch with their wives lest they realize middle-aged men need not resemble the Pillsbury doughboy dressed like Larry the Cable Guy.
DEAR RESCUE ME: PLEASE DON'T EVER "DO" A GAY CHARACTER AGAIN
With any luck, this week's Rescue Me wrapped up the "gay" story arc for Mike "Probie" Silletti. That would be the storyline dreamed up by series creator Peter Tolan as a hilarious way to make the actor who plays Probie uncomfortable. So that's how you make great art! Yeah, I'm still bitter.
In case you missed it, two weeks ago we learned that Mike's roommate/lover/whatever not only called his significant other "faggot" and tried to beat him up, but was also a complete lying scumbag carrying on with another guy while Probie was working at the fire station.
This week Probie's boyfriend/trick/whatever saw Probie flirting with a woman and told him not to come home if he was cheating on him. Cut to Probie in bed with said woman as he confesses he'd been not having homosexual sex (because Probie didn't "do" anything, you see) with another man. Or something. Who knows? Probie is such a dumb person you have to wonder how he ever passed the fireman's test. What really got me though was the woman telling Probie not to worry about having had a homosexual experience because "I've helped a lot of guys and I'll help you to."
Um, yeah.
The truth is we're getting off a whole lot easier than straight women do in Rescue Me. I mean how dumb is this woman “helping out” guys sleeping with
other guys on the Down Low? This same episode included Dennis Leary's
character getting karmic payback for his rotten treatment of women--including
raping his ex-wife. Just what was that payback? One of the women he cheated
with (and who then briefly became a lesbian because, well, just because)
slipped him Viagra and a roofie (the date rape drug) and then had her wanton
way with him. Oh, the inhumanity!
Only straight men could write women and gay men like this. Oy!
