WAIT! THEY FORGOT TO COUNT PROBIE!
The media was all abuzz this week with the shocking—shocking!—report from GLAAD that GLBT representation on TV sucks. GLAAD's analysis concludes that gays and lesbians make up only 1.3% of all the characters on network television and that only two of those—The Class and Hidden Palms—are lead roles. Oh, and most of those are gay, white men. (I suppose it goes without saying that they're mostly cute, too, or, at the very most, TV ugly.)

This is nothing new, of course. GLAAD has chronicled the gradually diminishing number of gay roles on television since the high in the late 90's. AfterElton has written about it as well. The media mostly did a good job covering the story, though a few did get sidetracked over the fact that GLAAD didn't count The Simpson's Mr. Smithers as gay. One rightwing twit I read did go on about the fact that gays and lesbians only make up 1.3% of the population so we should shut up already. (Most studies put the actual number at somewhere between 3-6%.) Given that the number of old white men dating young white women on television and the movies seems to be about fifty percent of all roles, I don't think we should be the ones shutting up.

BTW, GLAAD did count Probie's role, but under their report on cable shows. I'm not sure whether they counted him as gay, bisexual, or insulting to anyone with half a brain.

AND SUCH A FINE ROLE MODEL, TOO!
Notorious homophobe and erstwhile rapper Beenie Man has been in the news of late. He's been blathering on about not being a homophobe, then naturally turning around and saying homophobic crap. This week he tried doing something else—getting married. Being the paragon of Christian moral rectitude that he is, Beenie married his several months pregnant girlfriend whom he apparently enticed away from another rapper. Beenie and said rapper have been taking potshots at each other including one from Beenie saying that his new wife left the old guy because of Beenie's sexual prowess. Ah, true love! I wonder if that was part of his wedding vows?

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
Last week I failed to mention that Poseidon is now out on DVD. Check out Richard Dreyfuss playing a gay man in a big budget summer movie who isn't the villain, a sexual predator, or have a lisp. Okay, he was suicidal, but still… And for a flick with a well-adjusted main gay character, there is The Conrad Boys starring newcomer Justin Lo who wrote, directed and produced. Okay, there is a hot hustler of ambiguous sexual orientation, but still…

Speaking of bisexual serial killers, the third season of Nip/Tuck is out on DVD as is the second season of Desperate Housewives. Warning! Do not watch if you are sixteen, just coming out and looking for a role model!

Opening at theaters in New York and Los Angeles this week is the Spanish comedy Queens (Reinas) which our own Christopher Soden reviews today. I pretty much agree with everything he has to say, but I'd even recommend it more strongly. It really was a fun, gay flick that didn't insult your intelligence. It doesn't start filming until next month, but I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, one of next summer's more potentially controversial movies, just announced Steve Buscemi and Dan Ackroyd have joined the cast along with Adam Sandler. Stayed tuned for more details as the become available.

In addition to the usual television suspects including Project Runway, Reno 911, Noah's Arc, Designing Blind, and Lovespring, there is a show on the decidedly heavy side. It's Biography's Case Crackers on Friday night which profiles the white supremacist who murdered a Happy Valley, CA gay couple during the summer of 1999.

Don't forget the Emmys on Sunday night. BTW, since Marcellas is off of Big Brother you might want to reset your TIVO unless the antics of the remaining straight boys appeal to you.

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Gay. Week. Ever., or read previous installments here
