And unlike Rescue Me's creator Peter Tolan, I doubt Bryan (who gave the X-Men movies such a nice gay sensibility) will make a character gay just because it seems like a great way to make the actor playing the gay character uncomfortable.
Another bit of good news for us ‘mos is that HBO is reportedly in talks with Little Britain creators David Walliams and the openly gay Matt Lucas to adapt their very queer-friendly show for the cable network. With any luck, Little Britain will follow in the footsteps of The Office rather than those of the very short-lived Coupling.
Finally, actor Julian McMahon of Nip/Tuck recently told the press that "I've always found Christian [his character on the show] a little gay. Certainly a swinger." And apparently Christian is going to be somewhat exploring his gay side during the upcoming season (we already know he's going to ogle Mario Lopez in the shower). “It always seemed like a natural evolution for his character,” said Ryan Murphy, Nip/Tuck's openly gay creator.
Silly me! I had no idea being a swinger was part of the natural evolution toward being gay. Does that make “swinging” a “gateway” sexual practice much like pot is supposedly a gateway drug to the harder stuff? I guess I'll just have to tune in September 9th when something happens on a couch between McMahon's Christian and Dylan Walsh's Sean. Personally, I'm hoping they just have a belching contest.
WHEN IS HIS INDUCTION TO THE BIGOTS HALL OF FAME?
One of the early harbingers that the pro football season is right around the corner is the NFL's Hall of Fame ceremony where new members are inducted. Leading the pack of inductees this year is the late Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers who died of a respiratory attack in 2004. No doubt sports pages are going to be lauding White for his talents both on the field and off. Sadly, his off-the-field exploits included his often-homophobic work as a minister. That's one bit of info you probably won't be reading too much about.
So allow me to refresh your memory.
White appeared in a series of ads denouncing gay rights and gave an anti-gay speech to the Wisconsin legislature. Among the things White said about gays are gems including we are like “backstabbers and malicious people”, “liars and cheaters”, were “hurting our children”, and that being gay “is a decision, it's not a race.”
There is no question Mr. White knew how to sack an opposing quarterback. Too bad he didn't know squat about being a thoughtful, tolerant person.
