Gay
viewers might want to wait for episodes five and
six of Nude Modeling which study "the
gay model as a distinct tool of self-expression,
freedom and discovery, with special attention paid
to the differences between gay and lesbian art.”
Fortunately, I speak fluent “Press Release-ese”
and this translates to “We get to show really hot
people almost completely naked and call it art!
Take that PBS!”
A
VERY SPECIAL EPISODE OF NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Only a soap opera could combine coming out, near
drowning, and a lakeside slaughter of teenagers
that would do Wes Craven proud. Actually, watching
this week's episodes of As The World Turns
had me wondering if Wes had washed up on the shores
of Oakdale. Each day someone in a mask stuck knives
in teenagers faster than you can say craptastic
B-movie (clearly ATWT is trying to reinvent itself).
Add to that Luke Snyder's (Van Hansis) finally coming
out to his bestfriend, Kevin (whom he crushes on,
naturally). And THAT is followed mere moments later
by Kevin's near drowning only to be saved by Luke.
Gosh, why is this called a soap opera again?
Nonetheless, ATWT continues to get high marks for
both keeping Luke's storyline front and center,
and for not pretending all is fine and dandy when
someone comes out. Luke's friends and families struggle
with the news to varying degrees (and some are completely
accepting), but Luke is sure of who he is and doesn't
take any crap over being gay. More importantly,
he doesn't feel bad about it. Now if only someone
would teach poor Van how to mimic CPR more effectively.
The only thing sillier was, well, okay, the whole
rest of the show, but you get my drift.
GRAB YOUR INNERTUBE AND JUMP ON IN!
CBS is continuing to be very queer friendly (well, for a broadcast network), especially on Innertube, their free broadband channel. Right now you can watch clips about the new sitcom The Class, which features the only gay lead on network television. You can also watch The Class' creators, actual partners David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik, talk about their hopes and dreams for the show. I'm assuming that's fistfuls of Emmy's and truckloads of cash–also known as syndication.
Then click on the interviews with the participants of the upcoming season of the Amazing Race and watch boyfriends Terry Consentino and Tom Rock talk about themselves and the show. The clip must not have been edited by the folks promoting Running with Scissors as it starts off right away with Terry and Tom talking about how they met, dating, their life together–you know, things straight people take for granted, but that require warning labels for us ‘mos. I half-expected the clip to portray Tom and Terry as barely more than nodding acquaintances who couldn't bear to sit closer than five feet to each other lest they catch cooties. Hats off to CBS for not soft-pedaling the fact the two men are a couple.
Finally, there is an animated clip up of George Takei talking about his recent troubles traveling to Ireland. I've no idea why it's there, but I highly recommend that any male actor who gets stereotyped in a role that causes his career to wither on the vine just wait twenty years and then come out of the closet. He'll have more work than he knows what to do with.
FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
Not much theatrically this week, but if you're in New York or LA an interesting documentary, This Film is Not Yet Rated, opens. The movie takes a critical look at how the Film Rating Board does its business, including its unfair treatment of GLBT content. Check back on Wednesday for our review. And if you're in Seattle or Dallas, Another Gay Movie arrives. Lucky you.
Premiering tonight is the second season of Here!TV's steamy Dante's Cove. Here! was kind enough to get me the screeners of the first two episodes, but I confess I didn't have time to watch them. Check back next when I'll have more to say. This week also brings us the second episode of The Hill over on The Sundance Channel. Season Four of Nip/Tuck airs Tuesday night and I just checked the listing for the episode which includes this: Christian redecorates his apartment after a troubling appointment with his psychiatrist. Hmm, I can't wait to see what that is about. Oh, wait. Yes, I can.
On DVD this week is the first season of Dante's Cove, the German flicks Guys and Balls and Summer Storm, the English flick Kinky Boots, Say Uncle, the sixth season of Oz, and the wrenching United 93 starring the openly gay Cheyenne Jackson as the openly gay Mark Bingham.
That should keep you all busy for a while.
Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!
That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Gay. Week. Ever., or read previous installments here
