HEY, CARYN! IF IT WALKS LIKE A HOMOPHOBIC DUCK AND TALKS LIKE A HOMOPHOBIC DUCK
The New York Times' Caryn James recently penned an article about Mel Gibson's upcoming flick Apocalypto. The article disturbed me for several reasons, as it seemed to glide past Gibson's anti-Semitism and homophobia. In talking about Gibson's Braveheart, James chastises those gay folks who didn't care for a scene where the English King Longshanks hurls his son's male lover out a tower window. James says critics of that scene were "wrongheaded" and that any homophobia in Braveheart was just depicting what Longshanks felt and had nothing to do with Gibson's own attitudes toward gays.

Gosh, Caryn, exactly how do you know that? Like President Bush gazing into Russian President Putin's eyes, have you stared into Mel 's eyes and measured his soul?

James not only chooses to ignore Mel's own homophobic past (his portrayal of a gay man in Bird on a Wire, his comments about gay sexual practices, his fear people would think he's gay because he's an actor), she also chooses to ignore the film's historical inaccuracies. Gibson's Braveheart depicts Longshanks son, Edward II as effeminate and weak (he wasn't either), and the scene of his lover being tossed to his death is complete fiction. (Perhaps Mel used a psychic to contact Longshanks to confirm this is how he truly felt.) Add to that Gibson's portrayal of Herod Antipas in Passion of the Christ as an effeminate villain surrounded by a male coterie and you really have to wonder why James goes so easy on Gibson.

DING DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD
I swear I'm not going out of my way to be mean to people today, but you'll forgive me for mentioning (must...not...revel...in) the news that Jeff Naff, the Washington Blade's brand new editor, promptly sacked rightwing op/ed writer Jeff Gannon after taking over the paper last week. What were Jeff 's qualifications for writing for The Blade in the first place? Well, let's see. Once he gave up his “male escort” days, he somehow convinced the White House to give him press credentials to attend White House Press briefings where he asked hardball questions like whether Bush calls Laura “mommy” and whether apple sauce or cranberry sauce was his favorite. He also asked if Democrats actually cuddled with terrorists or just wanted to. (I exaggerate, but barely.)

Once the White House charade was unmasked (yeah, Americablog!), Gannon (originally Guckert) started writing rightwing attack pieces that somehow drew the attention of then Blade editor Chris Crain who for some unfathomable reason gave Gannon/Guckert a patina of legitimacy by publishing his rightwing screeds. Said new editor Naff about firing Gannon/Guckert:

“I made the decision...Basically, my concern is that he has a huge credibility problem for obvious reasons, and if a member of my staff lied about their identity, lied about their name, lied to their editors, lied to their sources, I would fire them. I wouldn't publish them.”

Three cheers to Naff for bringing common sense back to the Blade.

SPEAKING OF FAKE JOURNALISTS
Comedy Central once again proves they are the king of letting fools hang themselves.
