FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
CBS' The Class got some good news with Monday's rating reports. While the frosh sitcom didn't deliver Friends-like numbers (11 million versus Friends usual 20 million, or the same number of folks who read this column), it did give CBS its best numbers on Monday night since 2002. Hey, after the quick demise of The Book of Daniel and Crumbs, I'm grateful for any good news about a show with a gay character.

That being said, I'm not wild about The Class. It feels too much like a typical sitcom with too many broad performances. The older I get (I turn twenty-one next month!) the more I believe if a show is truly great, it's right there from the beginning. Last night I watched the very first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer again and all the pieces were there from the get-go—Buffy's alienation from regular high school, the Scooby gang, Gile's mentoring relationship, the really creepy vampires. The Class isn't in the same, well, class.

The Office gave us a gay episode last night when Michael inadvertently outed Oscar. (Thankfully, Oscar isn't the governor of a state who is involved in shady dealings and down-lowing his wife while she's in the hospital after giving birth. But I digress.) Last night also saw Brad make it through another week of Survivor. Check back next week when we'll have more about Brad. But best of all, last night brought us another episode of Celebrity Duets!

Duets is a total guilty pleasure, but with Lucy Lawless, Jai Rodriguez, and Hal Sparks can you blame me? Sometimes I feel like such a bad gay. Instead of going to a disco/nightclub/hip place, I'd rather stay home and play Madden '06 on my X-Box. Even worse, I still haven't seen an episode of Project Runway. But when a blond Lucy Lawless slunk out on stage in that unbelievably tight gold dress with gold glitter eyelashes, my inner-queen finally burst forth causing me to jump up and yell, “You go, girl!” Brent was so embarrassed. Did I mention we were in a department store?

Speaking of Hal Sparks, who would've guessed that going on Celebrity Duets might be as big a career boost as Gale Harold's role on Vanished? Word is that Vanished might do just that leaving Hal with more airtime than his QAF mate. Duets airs again tonight when it's rather likely Cheech will get voted off.

Sunday night brings a new episode of The Amazing Race with boyfriends Tom and Terry. You should also check out Matthew Rhys' turn as Kevin, the gay sibling on Brothers and Sisters. BTW, what's with all the straight British boys playing gay Yanks? First, it was Sean Maguire on The Class and now Matthew. Now that I think about it, Eric McCormack is Canadian, Heath Ledger is an Aussie...hmm, this seems suspicious. Also on Sunday night, Lifetime's Angela's Eyes has a gay episode. Lifetime didn't get me the screener in time to preview, so you'll have to check it out for yourself. I'll go out on a limb and hazard a guess that the gay role is played by someone is who half-Chinese, half-Irish and was born in Bangladesh.

Tuesday is the premiere of Help Me Help You. This is the latest Ted Danson vehicle and includes Jim Rash playing a man who doesn't know he is probably gay. (I think his character is named Jim McGreevey.) Speaking of which, I learned that Rescue Me creators, Peter Tolan and Dennis Leary had so much fun messing with actor Mike Lombardi by making him play gay last season that next season his character, Probie, is going to think he's actually a polar bear. It's all fun and games when Probie just wears a polar bear suit, but it ends in tragedy when he climbs into the polar bear enclosure at the Brooklyn Zoo and is eaten alive. Sure, it's a ludicrous storyline, but that's never stopped Rescue Me before!

Next Thursday night sees the premiere of the final new fall show with a nominal gay character. This time it's Ugly Betty on ABC. The gay character here is Marc who works for the show's villain. I haven't heard much about his character but at least he does know he is gay. Even better, he's not a former governor accused of corruption!

On the big screen this week you can either go highbrow or lowbrow. Okay, you can only go highbrow if you're in New York where Broken Sky, a film from Mexico, opens. Strand Releasing plans to slowly roll it out to more cities during the fall. The rest of you will have to settle for Jackass: Number Two reviewed here by our very own Karman Kregloe. Despite my love of X-Box, wild horses could not drag me to this movie, but three cheers to Johnny Knox for not only not being a homophobe, but for being gay inclusive.

Finally, I had a chance to listen to new CD's by Scissor Sisters, Madeleine Peyroux, Fergie, Neil Cohen, and Audra McDonald. I loved Scissor Sister's Ta-Dah and Madeleine's Half the Perfect World. I liked Fergie almost as much, and both Neil and Audra were fine, just not my cup of tea.

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Gay. Week. Ever., or read previous installments here.
