FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
It's another relatively dreary week at theaters for gay flicks. This Film is Not Yet Rated opens in New York and Los Angeles, gradually going wider the rest of the month. While The Covenant has nothing explicitly gay, it certainly looks to have a homoerotic sensibility. In fact, so much so that we asked openly gay horror film director David DeCoteau (Leeches, Beastly Boyz) to give us his take on the flick. Check back on Monday for his review.
If you haven't already seen it, then by all means go see Steve Carrell play gay in Little Miss Sunshine. The film's box office take continues to rise each week as word of mouth spreads not unlike another indie smash, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It's unlikely that Sunshine will scale the same heights as Wedding, but I see at least one Oscar nomination (Best Original Screenplay) in its future and maybe a couple of acting noms as well. The whole cast is terrific, but Abigail Breslin who plays Olive is a stand-out. And Carrell made me laugh harder each time he said, "Remember, I'm the preeminent Proust scholar in the country."
Paris Hilton fans rejoice. Not only does she have a film going straight to DVD (or maybe theater goers should be the happy ones), but it's got a gay character to boot. The film is called Bottom's Up and the gay character is played by David Keith. Sadly, it looks to be another entry in the "screaming queen" category. Also out on DVD is Lucky Number Slevin with a rather unpleasant gay subplot. At least it gives us ninety minutes of Josh Hartnett to look at.
The Office also comes out on DVD with Oscar Nunez in a slight gay role. If horror is more to your taste then check out Hellbent. On television, HBO's The Wire launches it's new season this weekend. If you're not familiar with the show, it's gritty, set in Baltimore and stars Michael K. Williams as an openly gay drug dealer. Check out our interview with him here.
Showtime has a new reality series about a therapist helping couples deal with sexual issues. Tonight's episode includes the show's first gay couple, Robert and Jeremy. Also tonight, Elton John hosts Fashion Rocks on CBS which kicks off New York's Fashion Week. Thanks to Project Runway fashion is totally the new black. Or you can watch Jai Rodriguez, Hal Sparks, and Lucy Lawless duke it over on Celebrity Duets. On September 10 Logo debuts WTC View about the aftermath of 9/11 for one gay New Yorker.
And I'll just let his little clip speak for itself.
BTW, I'm actually in Miami for the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. I know, I know--they'll let anybody attend these things, though come to think of it I haven't seen Jeff Gannon here. I'm actually conducting a panel on Saturday all about blogging and its impact on the media landscape. While it's true my hotel is right on the beach which is currently populated by loads of hunky boys sunbathing, I am in my room slaving away over my column. The things I do for you people!
Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!
That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Gay. Week. Ever., or read previous installments here.
