L.A.'s Fusion Festival Offers Third Year of Gay Men of Color on Film (page 2)
by Shauna Swartz, November 11, 2005

1 / 2 - Home

Saturday evening will feature Is It Really So Strange?, a video documentary about a greater Los Angeles Latino/a community of Morrissey fans. The largely gay groupies talk about their affection for the reclusive British singer-songwriter who once fronted The Smiths, which extends from avidly listening to his music to imitating his clothing and hair styles and longing to assume his persona.

If you find it frustrating to sit through 80 minutes of hearing about Morrissey’s genius without the satisfaction of hearing his songs, sit tight. The screening will be followed by a musical performance from The Sweet and Tender Hooligans, a Morrissey/The Smiths cover band.

Other festival programs:

Walk In The Light
A poignant and inspirational documentary about queer spirituality and the LGBT-friendly Unity Fellowship Church in South Central Los Angeles. The screening of this short video production will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s participants: Reverend Charles Lanier, Cookie Fields, Reverend Patti Dershem, and director M.R. Stiff.

Fusion Underground
A melange of voices and visions from the fringe, presenting shorts films/videos that touch on memory, loss, self-love and bold sexuality. Like the festival itself, this program offers the perspectives of a variety of racial and ethnic communities and a range of gender identities.Telenovelas

An appropriately outrageous and steamy tribute to the Spanish-language soap operas, here featuring lesbian moms, insane girlfriends, hot studs, murderous dykes, and a married man who is sweet on his brother-in-law.
