Best. Gay. Summer. Movie. Guide. Ever. (page 2)
by Michael Jensen, April 25, 2006 May 26th X-Men: The Last Stand starring Patrick Stewart. What's of interest for gay men: it not only stars Ian McKellen, but the gay subtext that has previously bubbled beneath the surface, boils over this time out as the world attempts to “cure” the mutants. Sounds like Jerry Falwell's fantasy, doesn't it? Sadly, the one gay X-Men, Northstar, doesn't appear in the movie. But there is still Hugh Jackman and Shawn Ashmore to look at. And I bet the X-Men don't end up getting “cured” either. That's some subtext I can live with. June 2nd The Break-Up starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. What's of interest for gay men: we get to see John Michael Higgins (Best in Show) play Aniston's gay best friend who kicks Vince Vaughn's ass. This goes a small way toward making up for Vince 's homophobic Wedding Crashers from last year. June 9th A Prairie Home Companion starring Meryl Streep and Lindsay Lohan. What's of interest for gay men: not a whole lot, but the cast does include Lily Tomlin and being good gay guys, we should support the ladies. Lily hasn't exactly been front and center about being a lesbian, but for her generation, she's been pretty darn good. Prairie Home's creator, Garrison Keillor, hasn't been quite so good, not once including a gay or lesbian character in Lake Wobegon (the movie's setting adapted from the NPR radio program). When asked about that, Keillor said there are gay folks there, but they don't want to be out. Um, sorry, but not buying that Garrison. You don't want them to be out. June 16th Nacho Libre with Jack Black. What's of interest for gay men: it's written by the openly gay screenplay writer/actor who brought us Chuck and Buck. Oh, and Jack Black wears tights. Of course, that's a reason not to see it. June 28th Strangers with Candy with Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris. What's of interest for gay men: the Comedy Central cult classic is transplanted to the big screen with Colbert's gay teacher still in love with the art teacher played by Paul Dinello. The flick has a huge ensemble cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Alison Janney. Can you get much gayer than them? June 30th Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh. What's of interest for gay men: as if a hot guy in tights isn't enough (okay, it's not), Superman is directed by the openly gay Bryan Singer who queered up the X-Men so effectively. Who knows what he'll do with the man of steel? And don't you love how comics are so wide-open to the influence of a gay sensibility? Fortunately, fundamentalists tend to be such literal thinkers, they miss most of the good stuff. July 7th Pirates of the Caribbean starring Johnny Depp. What's of interest for gay men: all those men on the high seas day after day. Just think of the tanning possibilities. Oh, and it has Johnny Depp. July 28th Little Miss Sunshine starring Toni Collette. What's of interest for gay men: Steve Carrell plays gay as a depressive uncle to the titular Little Miss Sunshine. That just screams summer block-buster, doesn't it? Seriously though, it is great to see gay men included as part of the family, especially when they are all equally dysfunctional. And Toni is one of the most underrated actors out there. Maybe this will be her long deserved breakthrough. August 2nd Quinceanera (limited release) starring Chalo Gonzalez. What's of interest for gay men: it's the story of a fifteen year old girl who is forced to go live with her gay uncle and gay cousin when she finds herself pregnant and kicked out by her family. Here is yet another example of homosexuals destroying the family. This independent won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance and is generating a lot of buzz. |
