Best. Gay. Summer. Movie. Guide. Ever. (page 3)
by Michael Jensen, April 25, 2006 August 4th Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby starring Will Ferrell. What's of interest for gay men: Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G) plays a “flamboyant French” race car driver who challenges...um, I stopped caring after typing flamboyant French. Or was it Will Ferrell? Actually, it's nice to see a gay character included in this sort of frat boy flick—assuming he's not just the punch line to a bunch of sophomoric jokes about hot rods and flame-outs. Oh, who am I kidding? August 18th The Night Listener starring Robin Williams. What's of interest for gay men: based on the novel by the openly gay Armistead Maupin (Tales of the City), Night Listener spins a tale about a gay radio host (Williams) who helps a young boy with AIDS. The movie also stars Bobby Cannavale (Will and Grace) playing gay again as William's ex-boyfriend. Yeah, I believe Cannavale as Wiliams' boyfriend almost as much as I believe anybody would spend millions making an action movie about snakes on a plane. August 18th Snakes on a Plane starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bobby Cannavale. What's of interest for gay men: first there were gay cowboys and now Hollywood expects America to believe there are gay flight attendants? That's the crazy notion in Snakes, and get this—the gay flight attendant actually helps save the day. I would assume Bobby Cannavale would be playing the flight attendant, but that's not the case. And who cares as long as he gets shirtless at some point? If he doesn't, I'm demanding a refund. Various Dates: Agnes and his Brothers (Germany). What's of interest for gay men: three brothers come together when they realize their differences are ruining their lives. Oh, one of the issues is that one of the brothers wants to be a sister. Time to Leave (France) What's of interest for gay men: well, there's no flamboyant French race car drivers, so that's a plus, but there is a dying French photographer who decides now is a good time for a spiritual and geographical journey. Those French and their wacky summer comedies. Say Uncle starring Kathy Najimy. What's of interest for gay men: Queer as Folk's Peter Paige plays a gay uncle who misses his godson. Naturally, he starts hanging around a local park, which for some odd reason disturbs the local moms. Hilarity ensues. Or is that tragedy? Race You to the Bottom starring Amber Benson. What's of interest for gay men: That's Amber Benson as in Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which gave us the best same-sex love story ever on television! Bottom is a romance where the complicating factor is that both Amber and her co-star, Cole Williams, already have boyfriends. Wasn't that the problem in Sleepless in Seattle? Actually, this might be an interesting twist on the stale romantic-comedy concept. Now if we could only get a major studio to try something this different for a romance. Another Gay Movie starring four cute boys you've never heard of. What's of interest for gay men: Think American Pie meets every teenage sex comedy you've ever seen and you have this flick's plot about four gay friends who vow to lose their virginity before college. You know it shouldn't be that hard—there are four gay boys, divide by two and you have two gay couples! Maybe they want to fall in love and then lose their virginity. Taking a cue from Will and Grace, the movie has guest appearances by everybody except Vice-President Cheney. Check out their very colorful website here. That's it! There is pretty much something out there for everyone this summer. And if you still can't quit Brokeback, I guess you'll have to stay at home and fire up the DVD player. |
