Review of Another Gay Movie
by Robert Urban, August 14, 2006
Another Gay Movie is director/writer Todd Stevens' new film about four irresistibly cute, clean-cut, college-bound teens who have just graduated from Santorum High School (yes, Santorum). In a quest to be deflowered before they enter college, the friends make a pact to lose their virginity before they go off to school. The film is a gay version of straight male coming-of-age sex comedies. In doing so, it pilfers from movies like American Pie (using quiche Lorraine instead of warm apple pie), Porky's (using a glory hole instead of a peep hole) and Animal House (using a debauched bull dyke instead of a Bluto Blutarsky character). Another Gay Movie stars four young newcomers: Michael Carbonaro as the cute, collegiate Andy Wilson; Jonathan Chase as the buff, jockish Jarod; Jonah Blechman as the effeminate, glammed-out Nico; and Mitch Morris as the nerdy, shy Griff. These eager, up-and-coming actors tackle their onscreen roles with well-meaning relish. However, all their roles really require is for them to be attractive, pleasant and … oh yeah — drop their trousers every few minutes. Theirs is a desperate “crusade to get laid.” The frisky foursome spends their summer wandering all over their hometown looking for sex. They conveniently find themselves at parties with other hot young gay guys in nice suburban homes with lots of available bedrooms. Everywhere the boys go, the opportunity to make it presents itself: at the private homes of various older gay adults; the cruisy world of online chat sites; even public restrooms. But somehow, their attempts to lose their virginity keep on failing due to absurd, comically gross circumstances that interrupt their pathetic attempts at having sex. For example, at a gay, college frat boy-type party, a very drunk Jarod thinks he's found the perfect guy to lose his virginity to. But in the middle of sex, Jarod gets sick and throws up on his partner. Such goings-on pretty much typify the kind of juvenile humor that runs throughout Another Gay Movie. Will any of the unlucky-at-sex foursome ever get to successfully hook up? Happily, at the film's end, they each manage to find a sex partner — albeit an unexpected one — with whom they can go all the way. Despite the crude humor, there are a few good things to be said about this movie. It does at least offer a portrayal of gay teens who are fully out and comfortable with their gay selves. Its lead characters are not angst-ridden or confused over their sexuality; they are as horny and guilt-free in their gay sexual pursuits as heterosexual teens are in theirs. And one might make the case that gay filmmakers have just as much a right to make shallow, vulgar stupid films as do straight filmmakers, and that gay audiences are now as free as straight audiences to opt for mindless movie-going experiences. Another Gay Movie also provides a string of B-list celebrity cameos that do, at least, keep one wondering who's going to show up next. |
