AfterElton's Fall Movie Guide (page 2)
by Craig Young, September 8, 2006
October Cut Sleeve Boys In this film from writer, director and producer Ray Yeung, two gay Chinese-British men look for love in London. One decides to sleep around, the other cross-dresses to meet his dream man in an all-male production of a beauty pageant. This feels like been there, done that, but maybe I'm just jaded. (Oct. 1) Wrestling With Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner This documentary about the openly gay Angels in America playwright covers the period from 2001 to 2004 while Kushner writes, works on the Kerry campaign, marries his partner and opens the musical Caroline or Change. (Oct. 4) Shortbus John Cameron Mitchell's (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) latest endeavor follows several New Yorkers engaging in real sex (gay, straight, solo, three-ways, you name it). The movie screened at Cannes to fairly good reviews, but it's certain to be controversial. The real question is whether viewers can watch real sex on film without thinking of it as porn. (Oct. 4) Wild Tigers I have Known Executive produced by Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho, Elephant, Gerry), Tigers follows 13-year-old Logan (Malcolm Stumpf, who played Madonna's kid in The Next Best Thing) as he copes with his budding homosexuality when he falls for the popular kid in class. It may sound like retread, but with Van Sant behind the production, you can safely expect something different. (Oct. 4) The Queen, a movie receiving buzz for Helen Mirren's performance, takes a look at how the Queen of England (Mirren) and Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) reacted when the news of Princess Diana's death rocked the nation. Gay because? Not only was Di an icon, but one of her closest friends was Elton John. (Oct. 6) Infamous The second biopic about gay author Truman Capote (played by Toby Jones in this version) is star-packed with Sandra Bullock, Daniel Craig, Jeff Daniels, Gwyneth Paltrow, Isabella Rossellini and Sigourney Weaver. Why should you see this one? Craig, Daniel Craig. Annoyingly, Craig's passionate same-sex kiss in the film has already generated media speculation about how this might affect James Bond's macho image. (Oct. 13) Running with Scissors A young Augusten Burroughs (Joseph Cross) is pawned off by his mother (Annette Bening) to her therapist, Dr. Finch (Brian Cox). The film is a comic tale about a young gay man growing up in the middle of an extended crazy family, and there is already Oscar buzz for Joseph Fiennes' performance as the pedophile who becomes Burroughs' first lover. If the movie, which is directed by Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck), is half as good as the book, you will find yourself laughing out loud. (Oct. 27) The House of Adam In this thriller, a closeted police detective investigates the unsolved death of his lover, Adam, who comes back to haunt him. Is it any good? It's a low-budget, independent, gay thriller. Personally, I am expecting a masterpiece. You decide. (Oct. 27) |
