ALL THE PRETTY HORSES
Gay fans of glam/goth/metal in the U.S. heartland will love Minnesota’s own "transmembered" rock group All the Pretty Horses. This dark, enigmatic band has so far produced four CDs, one LP and several DVDs and VHS tapes of their visually arresting and hard-edged performance art.

The group is fronted on guitar and vocals by transgender performance artist Venus. "I first got interested in being a musician when I saw David Bowie on The Midnight Special, says Venus. "Seeing David Bowie come out with his red hair on end in his little spider costume with his little hands--it was just incredible. I was just a little kid, but I knew then that that was who I wanted to be."

Aside from performing music, All the Pretty Horses has also made a name for themselves in filmmaking and visual art, often from a transgender perspective. They have been active in organizing fetish and transgender-aimed musical events throughout the Twin Cities.

But they don’t limit themselves to just to gay music venues--they perform at straight rock clubs too. “I wanted us to start making the step out into the real world, and have the transgendered community really have the opportunity to be out in the open with everybody, and not in hiding," says Venus. "It's a little bit more risk-taking, but I think it's what the community needs to do."
