Rupert Everett: from Best Friend to Leading Man (page
3)
by Chris Thomas, March 21, 2005 From all accounts, however, this sensitive-boy-turned-wild-child was still spreading his wings throughout his tumultuous twenties. He even released a decidedly unsuccessful rock album. At one point he moved to Hollywood and roomed with two other uknown young actors, Eric Stolz and James Spader (his future colleague on Boston Legal). Hollywood did not quite bite at this point, and he moved back to Europe, somewhat defeated. A series of bad role choices had squandered his early momentum. He was also still conflicted about his sexuality. "When I was younger I was terrified of AIDS because I'd been such a dog from the age of 15," he told the Sunday Times. "And I felt very depressed, until I moved to France to write and make European films, and then I felt much better. It was then that I realized I was gay and definitely ruled out the possibility of ever going straight. If there was a question mark in my mind, it was no longer there'." He publicly came out in an interview in 1989. About his low period post-Hollywood, he told the Tatler that "the thing is, I never saw my supposed low period as a low period at all. I was kind of pootling along: working in French plays, Russian films. In fact, I really enjoyed my European period. I had a great time. One of the bad things about England is that it is so provincial. If something isn't happening in England, then it isn't happening at all." That was certainly the attitude in Hollywood, as well, concerning the more than twenty movies he made in the 80s and early 90s. Everett's career was reborn with his irresistable turn as Julia Roberts' gay confidant in 1997's blockbuster My Best Friend's Wedding. The director reportedly reedited the movie and shot extra footage to increase Everett's screen time by 17 minutes after test screening audiences raved about him. Everett was suddenly an it boy again, reaffirmed by his acclaimed supporting role in Shakespeare in Love. However, his movies since then have had mixed reception. He garnered raves for Ideal Husband, but he has made some unfortunate choices, like the mediocre Midsummer Night's Dream, the dreadful Inspector Gadget, and the almost career-killing Next Best Thing. However, he has had success in animation, including the hit Shrek 2 and the upcoming The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Everett is probably most famous for being gay and for being Madonna's best friend, though recent rumors hold that her devotion to Kaballah has made the two old friends drift apart. |
