Rupert Everett: from Best Friend to Leading Man (page
4)
by Chris Thomas, March 21, 2005 He still took the time to defend Madonna publicly, though, against his acquaintance Elton John's public snipe that she lip syncs at concerts. He called John "cranky" and said that "it's none of my business, to be quite honest, but Elton's gone a bit wild in the last few months, I've noticed. Cause there was the Taiwangate airport saga, which I thought was actually genius. I loved him in that. And then the thing with Madonna, which struck me as a little bit unfair, really." Everett himself is not above swiping at fellow celebrities, however, like when he said of Boy George to W Magazine that "Who wants to see that big blob on telly? Too bad there's not a closet big enough for him to hide in." In general, this author of two novels is a highly quotable source of clever quips and sound bites. He plays into his persona as the gay prince of persiflage, but he does so with elan and style. He seems to enjoy his role in pop culture, though his ambitions to be an even bigger leading man are often repeated. There was much speculation about his being cast as either the next James Bond or a gay Bond-type, but he eventually gave up on that dream. "The next step would be to play a major leading straight role in a movie," he told the Daily Mirror of his career plans, but warned that "they would burn down MGM if they got a gay actor to play James Bond." Like many gay men, former model Everett has struggled with vanity and aging. As he said in an interview last year with the BBC, "you become very self-aware after a few years in showbusiness. You are very aware of how much worse you look. I think vanity is quite often about wanting to look better, as much as feeling that you look really good." Some fans think that his response to this pressure has been some rather drastic recent plastic surgery. This past fall, the popular web site Awful Plastic Surgery describes "audiences who were stunned at his new look after seeing him on Ellen this week. I got dozens of emails from people who do not like his brow lift. Hopefully the surgery will settle in and he won't look so startled." One fan on that site asked, "is it me, or does he look really strange?" Another lamented, "ugh, why did he ruin his beautiful face?" Everett has never claimed to be the most emotionally stable person, and he is certainly not the first actor to fall prey to vanity, but hopefully his stint on Boson Legal will prove that Botox has only paralyzed his forehead muscles, not his acting skills or charm. |
