AE:
Do you hold out hope for the next election turning things around?
ANT:
Absolutely, I mean the country is in pretty bad shape right now and it
was in good shape when he took the reins. And he won’t be the incumbent...so
whoever gets the republican nomination will have a tough road ahead of
him. Good for us.
AE:
You said you have great family support. How about dating?
ANT: You
know I am not a monogamous person so I think when I tell people that it
kind of scares a lot of them away. I don’t believe in monogamy,
I don’t think it exists. I don’t think it’s possible
for me.
AE:
I think there are a lot of people who also believe that; they just aren’t
up front about it.
ANT:
I’m very honest with it so that kind of limits my dating scope because
there re so many people who hold on to that [ideal] of finding somebody
who is going to be monogamous. Well, it’s not gonna be me so good
luck. I think that tends to be an issue. The other thing is when you are
in the public eye, you meet guys who say they love that, they can handle
that and then when it comes down it they can’t. And that’s
sad because it’s comepletely out of my control because that’s
what I do for a living.
I can’t
pick and choose the parts of the industry I want, you get the whole shebang,
the whole enchilada and I realize that going into it so typically when
guys want to go out with me I say to them there's a whole lot involved
here. You’re not just dating me, you’re dating all my fans,
you’re dating crazy people who want to come up and hurt my feelings
about what I do, you’re dating all of that. At first they’re
like, “Oh I can handle that.” And then it always turns out
that they can’t.
AE:
Is it easier if they’re in the industry?
ANT: Typically, yes. I dated somebody who was kind of famous
for a bit and that was fun because they knew what was what.
AE:
How do you like being called the Paul Lynde of the new millennium?
ANT: Oh
my god I love it. Paul Lynde was genius. He was a genius, he was hysterical
and he was one of my role models. I take it as a compliment. A lot of
people might think “Why? It’s so derivative.” Or whatever.
I’m like, you know what, I thought he was a brilliant man. I liked
what he did. He was a role model for me when I was a very little kid.
I felt like I actually knew him. So I take it as a huge compliment.
AE:
What was your favorite TV show growing up?
ANT:
I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. It’s a tie.
AE:
Battle of the blondes?
ANT: Well because of Uncle Arthur on Bewitched. Him
and Aunt Clara were my favorite characters on Bewitched. And
then I Dream of Jeannie because I really thought for the longest
time that I was a genie growing up.
AE:
You did?
ANT: My parents actually brought me to a shrink about it.
AE:
How old were you when that happened?
ANT: I was like eight. I used to literally cross my arms to do
a do and blink and my parents sent to me to a shrink.
AE:
Did the shrink decide you needed to watch less TV or was there some deeper
psychosexual meaning to it all?
ANT: No
the shrink told my parents, it’s okay, he’s a kid, and he’s
living a fantasy. It’s okay when he’s eight. And my mom was
like, “There are no pills we can give him?” The shrink should
have said, “You know what lady? That’s gonna come a lot later
in life and you're gonna wish you never said it.” Yeah, they sent
me to a shrink over it. I also used to pretend I was Sister Patrille in
The Flying Nun. It was a double whammy for my parents. Through
it all they said they had no signs that I was gay growing up. They took
their kid to a shrink because he thought he was a flying nun and a 2000-year-old
genie but they never had any signs that I was gay.
