Interview with Project Runway's Kayne Gillaspie and Robert Best (page 6)
by Josh Aterovis, August 15, 2006 Page 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 - Home AE: Was Vincent as crazy as he came across or was it just creative editing? RB: I think they edited him nicely. Vincent was a nut. KG: Exactly. He really was a nut, like certifiably, and he'll tell you. He slept in the bed next to me, and we'd have long conversations after the day was over, and it was a very hard situation for him. He has an 8-year-old daughter, and he struggled with not being able to talk to her and be there for her, and he questioned his place there every day. Was it worth it for the 49-year-old man with a young daughter and beautiful wife at home? We'd try to cheer him up and make him decide that absolutely, we're all there for a reason. It was a hard time for him, but he was definitely crazy. I'd say to him, You crazy, Vincent. We had that rapport. But honestly, he was one of the kindest souls I've ever met. He wouldn't hurt a fly. RB: I don't know about that. He'd sell you out in a one-on-one interview, as I found out after watching a recent show. He said, I didn't believe in what Robert was doing at all. And I was just like, That's odd. You never told me that when we were working on the challenge. The things you find out in hindsight! KG: Well, there you go. I retract that comment. RB: Needless to say, we're not speaking. AE: Viewers were shocked when Heidi [Klum, host of Project Runway] eliminated Malan over Angela [Keslar] at the Miss USA challenge. What was the reaction of the designers? AE: My favorite recap website calls it the Poopy Dress. KG: I'll just say, that was a lesson for me. Malan was very confident, so much so that for at least a good hour or two the first day of that challenge, he was working on this fabulous and I will say fabulous shrug that she would just never wear. He knew he wasn't making it for her. He just loved the beauty of the fabric. It was beautiful and looked like a flower, but that was two hours he could have lengthened his dress, or hemmed it at least. He wasted time, and it's because he was so confident about making gowns. Robert and I may have looked like we were having fun, but we were cracking the whip on each other because we knew how much was at stake. RB: That's a really good point. You want to think, Oh, he didn't deserve to go. But when you're judging the challenge and what people achieved, when you look at it from that point of view, yes, Angela failed as a teammate, but she wasn't the leader. At the end of the day, gown to gown, I think Malan's was the weakest. AE: What has been the most surprising elimination so far? RB: I agree. That's a good one. KG: That little doggy thing? Come on. A doggy outfit with a hoodie on it? Come on! RB: That was one where I thought, surely I kind of secretly hoped as well they were going to send Keith home. In terms of how they seemed to be positioning it, [it] was if you failed at the challenge, you'd be sent home. He didn't even do the challenge! And then the best thing about it was, he lied! He said he did four dog coats, and I was like, You didn't even do one! And he took a bracelet from the accessory wall, put it around his dog's neck, and said he made it. And they bought it! I was horrified, watching that, whereas Katherine had made this darling little coat for her dog, and her dress OK, it wasn't the most out there or whatever, but it wasn't a horror show like they made it seem. That really was a surprise. AE: Who are your favorite designers from past seasons? RB: I thought Daniel V. was really talented, from last season. I liked his whole approach to everything. He seemed very diligent about what he was working on and very consistent. And of course, I loved that Santino was just insane, like balls-out crazy, and that was all captured on film for eternity. That's got to be fun. AE: Well, thank you both for talking with us and being so candid. RB: Absolutely. |
