AE: When you came out in 1993 on Geraldo, what other gay men were out?
JS:
It was Elton John, it was k.d. lang, it was Kate Clinton, Lea Delaria, Harvey Fierstein.

AE: Last time I talked to you Coffee Date was just coming out, what have you done since then?
JS:
I did another movie, San Saba, and that's with Angus Macfadyen from Braveheart. He played Sandra Bullock's fiancé in (Divine Secrets of) The Ya Ya Sisterhood. I play an older rich gentleman who is grifted out of $98,000 by a younger (male) lover. It's a drama, it's a wonderful part.

Then I have another movie coming out called Monkey Man where I play this alcoholic lush who owns a vitamin store. And I'm also producing a short film where I play a priest, with Elaine Hendrix called Twisted Faith, which I'm going to be doing in the next couple weeks. Also I have a little cameo in The DL Chronicles. That's going to be on Here! TV.

AE: Are you the one white boy?
JS:
I'm the rude white guy.

AE: What's your dream part that you've never been called in for?
JS:
I'm looking for a part that will change my career. Something like Phillip Seymour Hoffman or Paul Giamatti or Forest Whittaker – all these wonderful actors. That's where I want to be and that's what I'm trying to work towards.

AE: What's your comedy act been about lately?
JS:
A lot of talk about gay marriage, there's a lot of talk about politics in the show. My favorite new joke is about my favorite show, Lost. … “I can't believe they didn't have a gay flight attendant.”

AE: You should play him!
JS:
Oh, I would be running through the jungle and saying, “Please let me into the camp. I found this plant and I can make moisturizer out of it.”

AE: (Laughs hard). That's really funny.
JS:
And I could have sex with Sawyer.

AE: Is it hard when the people who go out with you say, “Make me laugh?”
JS:
Right, it's very uncomfortable. Sometimes when they say it they realize how ridiculous it is and then they're embarrassed and then you have to make them feel better. I've had guys break my heart who wanted to go out with me because of who they thought I was. And because I'm not famous enough, it wasn't enough to go through with it.

AE: It wasn't as glamorous as they thought it was going to be?
JS:
I don't think so. That's why I called my TV special, Jason Stuart: Making it to the Middle. And that's in the midst of being sold right now as a television stand-up special with a story wrapped around it about what it's like to be in the middle, what it's like to be on the road, what it's like to be doing stand-up in the middle of the country. What it's like to be sort of known, but not known.

Stuart's Wisecracks appearance airs Tuesday, January 23 at 2:00 AM and at 12 PM.
