Ask the Flying Monkey! (February 17, 2009)
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country)
Q: I've been feeling Lost a lot lately, mostly because I'm completely enamored with one of their new characters, Daniel Faraday, played by a very unique actor, Jeremy Davies. Can you tell me anything gay about Jeremy Davies? Anything at all? - Lindsey, New York
A: Hmmm, well, I can tell you that Davies, who first made a splash in the terrific indie hit Spanking the Monkey (1994), has made a name for himself playing nervous losers and misfits, in movies such as Secretary (2002), Solaris (2002), The Locusts (1997), and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Some of these characters could, in a certain light, from a certain angle, by certain people, be read as “maybe, possibly gay.”
Davies also played a drama student in HBO’s TV production of The Laramie Project, about the murder of Matthew Shepard, and is sometimes listed as appearing in the indie gay thriller The 24th Day (2004) (though I can’t seem to confirm what role, if any, he plays in the movie).
Other than that, well, he’s got a pretty trim waistline!

Q: Recently after watching Chelsea Lately, I noticed one of her round-table panelists, E News host Jason Kennedy, had a gay vibe. Is my gaydar still functioning or do I have to provide my “gay card” to the authorities? – Chris, Washington, DC
A: Please surrender your gay card immediately: a publicist for E! tells the Flying Monkey that Kennedy is straight.

Q: What do you think Milk's chances are at the Oscars? Do you think Penn can win Best Actor? Does Brolin have a chance against Heath? What are Gus Van Sant's chances for directing and Dustin Lance Black for screenplay? – Msark2
A: Remember the Flying Monkey’s discussion a few weeks back about the subjective nature of art — how there are no objective criteria for judgment, and it’s all basically personal opinion, despite how so many people try to argue otherwise?
This is doubly true when it comes to Oscars, which are mostly about hype, box office success, behind-the-scenes gossip, and just general sucking-up.
One thing they’re most decidedly not about is whether the movie or performance in question is the “best” anything. They’re just … not. At all.
Now that said, and keeping in mind that these things can change on a dime, the conventional wisdom in Hollywood for Milk is currently mixed.
