News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Ask the Flying Monkey! (March 11, 2009)

Q: I am a huge fan of anime and am surprised that networks such as Logo have not devoted any of their programming space to any of the great anime out there with GLBT main characters. Does Logo have any plans to devote any block of their programming to anime in the future?  - Sweet, Hudson, NH

A: Well, of course animated characters can have gay faces. Just look at anime. Duh!

Seriously, the problem with anime is that most of it falls into one of two categories: porn or schoolboy/schoolgirl crush. But Logo definitely does air some, on Alien Boot Camp, Fridays at ten. Two of the best are Fake, about gay NYPD detectives, and Winter Cicada, a miniseries about two samurai who fall in love, set in feudal Japan.

Q: Am I the only one who gets the gay vibe from the character of Buzz on The Closer? He’s a minor character on the show, but I have noticed that Buzz wears a wedding ring on his right hand; no mention is made of his character's personal life; and in the season finale he spoke directly into the camera in a gender neutral message to Brenda. On the other hand, it could just be wishful thinking on my part. -- Jon, Cleveland, OH

A: Phillip P. Keene, the actor who plays Buzz, might have something of a gay face (and a very handsome one at that!), but the character does not.

“He's straight,” Keene told OutinHollywood.com of Buzz. “We already did that on NYPD Blue remember? My friend Bill Brochtrup was on that show. We thought it would be kind of weird to revisit that.”

But Keene is definitely gay. “Out!” he says. “I have a partner of 15 years so it's very nice.”
