Ask the Flying Monkey! (April 7, 2009)

Q: Who is Luke Macfarlane dating? -- Anonymous

A: Sadly, the Flying Monkey doesn’t know. Luke has been linked with T. R. Knight, Charlie David, and a certain TV actor who is not out. But he’s been very circumspect about his personal life. He’s also declined repeated invitations to do an interview with AfterElton.com

Yes it's "The Man I Love"

One of a series of made-for-TV French gay movies that "Picture This!" has put out on DVD. My fave of this group is As Luck Would Have It starring the late, great Jean-Claude Brialy. It was one of his last roles. And he was a major French film star (go to IMDB and look up his credits) and OPENLY GAY eons before NPH was a gleam in his Daddy's eye.

Why?

Why did Luke Macfarlane repeatedly decline to do an interview with AfterElton.com?
LgH's picture

Why indeed....

For those of us who have followed Luke's career for some time now, his lack of willingness to give interviews to anyone is vexing to say the least. He will talk when he feels he must.. But if given a choice ..... NOT!!

He did the ADVOCATE's 'I Advocate' column for this month's printed issue (not the OnLine.. damn it...) so he might be willing to talk here at some point..... Maybe.

In person he's very quiet, polite, humble.... one of the nicest people I have ever met. I respect that he wants to keep his private life that way for as long as possible .. So far he's been only collaterally hit by the gossip guys ( TR and the 'other actor' being the targets), but as his star rises (as I hope it does), that might change.

Gee whiz, Bryan Fuller. A

Gee whiz, Bryan Fuller. A gay character "next season." Again. That line. I know Fuller is canonized around here, but I think he's a hypocrite. I loved "Pushing Daisies" but, again, he had the ability to include a gay character (and not the guy to ran the morgue -- give me a break!), but he didn't. Among all the "crazy, zany, nutty stuff" going on there was no "room" for a gay character. At all. And yet this guy has the balls to criticize "Queer as Folk" again and again! I'm through with him until he puts his money where his big promises are.

I personally am a great fan

I personally am a great fan of Bryan Fuller's work; Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, and Pushing Daisies all having special places in my heart, so I gotta say his work isn't as gay-inclusive as it could be, but you can't say he avoids it all together.

Wonderfalls (also starring Lee Pace), for example, had an ongoing storyline involving the main character's closeted sister's rather stressed sex life.
Dead Like Me was originally supposed to have a gay storyline involving the main character's father, a storyline which is briefly alluded to in the Pilot, but the storyline was ditched after Bryan left the show. Before he left however, there was an incredibly touching episode in which straight character Mason learns a sad lesson in love when he is called to reap the soul of a gay man who dies in an accident, and then that of his husband who commits suicide shortly after.

And to be fair, Olive Snook was originally going to be a lesbian but they fortunately wrote that out in favour of her being hopelessly devoted to Ned, which was my absolute favourite part of that show. To be perfectly honest, I think the addition of a gay character would have been arbitrary and unnecessary (as I believe the addition of the sexuality of the coroner was), although I would have much appreciated for there to have been at least one case with a gay angle on it. It was disappointing.

I agree his work could stand to be a bit more gay-inclusive, but you couldn't go as far as to say that he is a hypocrite. It's a bit harsh.

I think that's extremely

I think that's extremely harsh and incredibly unfair. Bryan Fuller just returned to Heroes. Would you really rather he immediately stick in a gay character than plan one out and build one more organically into the series' arc? And he says quite clearly here that he almost did just that but then pulled back from it because the character was a villain. I'm frankly getting a little tired of these sort of reactionary responses that seem to breed like crazy here. Just because a show runner is gay does not obligate him to immediately make the show gayer.

Dead Like Me included a gay character--for one episode, till the network made him turn the character straight, which was one of the main reasons Fuller left the show. Wonderfalls had a lesbian, and was canceled after 3 or 4 episodes aired. Not saying that that's necessarily the reason that happened, but I can completely understand Fuller wanting to play it a bit safe with Pushing Daisies when it came to that, particularly because a show featuring bright, candy colors, outrageous costumes, storybook narration, and Kristen Chenowith breaking into song on a fairly regular basis is already very, very gay in sensibility. And not having a gay character is the only way in which PD ever could be accused of "playing safe".

I don't think Fuller is obligated as a gay man to include a gay character in everything he writes. He's a writer, not an activist. I am grateful for the brilliant stories he creates. And if it's between watching a show with the sort of haphazard, uneven plotting as QAF or watching one of Fuller's brilliantly composed and structured series, I would go with Fuller's shows any day of the week, whether or not there are any clearly gay characters.

Bryan Fuller's primary job

Bryan Fuller's primary job at the moment should be to make the show good again. Fix the problems with meandering (and plain silly) plots, unengaging characters and an inability to remember th show's own continuity.

Until the show is back on track, I'd rather they didn't introduce a gay character that would just be woefully mishandled and cliched.

Knickie's picture

Because there are already so

Because there are already so many "woefully mishandled and cliched" characters on the show already, God forbid that one of those mishandled characters might be gay! I stand by my comments about Fuller until I see something different. It's always "next year" or "next season" -- if gay creators won't do it, why should we expect straight producers to bother? And yes I'd rather watch five years of an array of gay characters on QAF -- even if the show wasn't always spot on -- than wait around until the turn of the next century to get more than a token inclusion on the networks -- especially from out creators.

The last thing TV or film

The last thing TV or film or we need are more woefully mishandled and cliched gay characters.

OMG!

Brent, did you converse with Sean Maguire over the phone or via e-mail? Out of curiosity, he didn't happen to mention anything about being madly in love with me and too shy to admit it, did he? ;Þ

I chatted with him on the phone. And as a matter of act, yes, he DID mention you specifically by name!

He actually seems like a very nice guy.

I hope fans of Luke do not think that he is snubbing his fans

by declining interviews with After Elton and others. There will be questions that he sees coming at him that whether he remain silent or with a reply of yes or no or decline to answer, would implicate someone he care for. Even if it's not true the speculators would take it and run with it.He is entitled to his privacy and he is entitled to protect people that he loved. As a fan, I enjoyed him on the screen large or small or on stage. As curious as I am about his personal life, if he's not telling, that's his prerogative. We have no right to pry.

Just to be clear....

Whenever I do an interview, I never ask intrusive or rude questions (IMHO). If a question of a more personal question (like who or if someone is dating) does come up in the course of conversation, I usually say something like, "if that's too personal, we can move on." I understand that it's ok to be private about some things, and I respect that. I think most others here feel the same way ( and frankly I think you get a better, more relaxed interview that way).

Luke..

Brent, I agree with you. I guess you DO get a better and more relaxed interview. Like the previous poster said, I am curious about those things too, but frankly it does not bother me a bit that Luke Macfarlane refuses interviews. It kind of intrigues me even. The fact that I am not a huge fan, but just an average fan, may be also a reason why I don't mind.

Big jump, but just to say that there are people out there that are angry with Jake Gyllenhaal who 15 months after Heath Ledger's death has not said anything in public about it all. I think it's just totally totally acceptable that he stays silent and I hope that come the day he feels he has to say something (which might be never) he'll do it because he wants to, not because of a journalist's question.

L'Homme Que J'Aime

Quote:
Is it L'Homme Que J'Aime (The Man I Love), a 1997 movie that first aired on French television, about two men who work at a pool, one gay and one “straight,” and the feelings they develop for each other?

Definitely "L'homme Que J'Aime"! Love Jean-Michel Portal! It's a shame we don't see more of him!

Sean Maguire...

Sean Maguire... if you're one of those actors vain and/or neurotic enough to read their press (i.e. all of them!) know this -- you're talented and a great interview.

Oh yeah, and a-frickin-dorable.

One more plug for "The Man I Love"

It's another film that borders on wish-fulfillment (the "straight" guy who doesn't realize he's gay until he meets the one, irresistable man who awakens his true nature). However, it's flawlessly played by the two leads, with a serious undercurrent/subplot that gives it additional poignancy. The love scenes are scorching, and the last 15 minutes or so is gut-bustingly funny, swoonily romantic, and hard-hittingly dramatic, one after the other (and sometimes several at once).

Dear Lord, I didn't even put it together that that was the same Sean Maguire. He was handsome and winning on "The Class," but in "Meet the Spartans" he is SCORCHINGLY hot. (Yes, it's a terrible movie, but there are worse things than seeing gorgeous half-naked men repeatedly kissing and embracing each other.)

Is Zeljko Ivanek gay?

Curious, as they were contemplating making his character on Heroes gay, and he played a closeted gay character on Damages, wondered if he was in real life?

He also played bisexual...

in the movie Mass Appeal.

I'd say there's a 50/50 chance he's gay. :)

Dream Boy

I loved DREAM BOY and Jim Gimsley is one of my favorite out gay writers. One of the leads is Max Roeg (who is straight) and the son of director Nicholas Roeg and Theresa Russell, who is one of my favorite underused actresses. The film is atmospheric and totally Souhern Gothic.

It is director James Bolton's follow up to his equally haunting film, EBAN AND CHARLEY. He is now in development on a filmed adaptation of THE MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MOON, for which I have high hopes as one of gay fiction's most beloved books.

That's all I am saying...
