Ask the Flying Monkey! (May 4, 2009)

Q: I like out actor Cheyenne Jackson. He so charming and smart, and I really wanted to know why he so keep private about his personal life. I know that he’s had a partner for many years, but he never shows up with his partner at any shows. – Sara, Malaysia

Cheyenne Jackson very much taken

A: In our recent live chat with Cheyenne, someone asked him just this question.

“You never see my partner because he doesn't want to be seen,” he wrote. “He says he is like the Amish, that if you take his picture, you take part of his soul.”

“Believe me,” Cheyenne says, “if I had my way, he would be on my arm at every bloody event. He's hunky and hilarious, but he is just private. But if you are really stealth, you can catch him sometimes. Be on the lookout for the 6'4" scientist who ducks out of every photo op.”

Q: I noticed that Samoa has recently banned any screenings of the film Milk. It's clear that the reasoning behind banning it would be because of homophobia, but I have not been able to find an official statement from the censors of Samoa. Can you use your ever present abilities to find out the reasoning censors of Samoa gave to deny the film? – Thom, Auckland, New Zealand

A: It’s not just screenings that were banned; the sale of the DVD was prohibited as well.

The reason? "There are rules and guidelines for these things," said Principal Censor Leiataua Niuapu Faaui, offering no reason whatsoever.

Which is exactly the point, isn’t it? When you give the government the enormous power to ban and censor information from its citizens, they don’t have to justify their actions – almost by definition.

With ceremonial tree climbing and flaming stick-wielding
already popular, perhaps Samoan
Milk censors worried
the island nation was already gay enough.
