Ask the Flying Monkey! (May 14, 2009)

Needless to say, the big-name record labels haven’t exactly come clamoring, but that’s perfectly okay with Gibb. “Who wants that kind of success?” he said a few years back. “It's never good. I think success is having an audience, having people who want to talk to you about your art, that's success. I hate mainstream.”

Indie labels have done Gibb just fine so far – and you can also hear the band in the movies Small Town Gay Bar and Shortbus.

So what’s next for the band? “We are mastering up the new record, Origin:Orphan, on Wednesday,” he tells the Flying Monkey. “Should be out in the fall. And we’re doing a Canadian East Coast Tour in July, playing Halifax Pride July 25.”

Joel Gibb

Since I know that life on the road has its share of embarrassments and ridiculousness, I asked Gibb if he had any stories to share. “I rarely get embarrassed,” he says. But he did mention a certain European tour that got pretty crazy. “Check out these pics of some of the Bavarian choir crowd surfing.”

Could be wrong...

But didn't Gaspard Ulliel play gay in Van Sant's section of "Paris, Je T'aime"? Still not a lot, but more than having played "gayish".

You got it Aaron!

It was one of the wittiest segments in the film. Gaspard visits a framing store with best pal Marianne Faithful (already we're WAY over the "Hipness Quotient") when he spies store worker Elias McConnell (the photographer in Elephant and a Gus fave for screamingly obvious reasons -- he's a Babe-and-a-Half) It's a real coup de foudre as Gaspard pours out his sudden passion for Elias in a brisk and very funny speech -- then leaves. The kicker is that Elias doesn't understand that much French and has no idea what Gaspard just said.

"Vacuous and Compliant"???

Ok, others here are clearly religious about Torchwood, Supernatural, Harry Potter, LOTR, but I'm religious about the James Bond movies: I was even a member of the Official James Bond Fan Club when I was a wee lad. So I have to say that I take offense at the stereotyping of Bond Girls as "Vacuous and Compliant"!

Think about this for a moment: these women, while perhaps intended as male fantasies, have largely been--yes, I'm going to say it--pre-feminist pioneers: they were independent, sexually liberated and strong-willed before the feminist movement of the 1970s came along. Of course, they're also beautiful, but many of them are highly accomplished and courageous.

Soviet Intelligence Corporal Tatiana Romanova risks her life to betray both her country and the nefarious SPECTRE to help Bond smuggle a decoding machine out of Istanbul in From Russia With Love.

Pussy Galore, despite the obscene name, is an accomplished pilot with her own "Flying Circus," a team of women pilots; she, too, risks her life by betraying Goldfinger to help Bond.

Dr. Holly Goodhead is not only a CIA agent but also a NASA trained astronaut who pilots a space shuttle in Moonraker, and initially refuses Bond's advances, but then beds him for her own scheming purposes.

Melina Havelock is an expert marks-woman with the crossbow and has knowledge of undersea diving and submersibles and is seemingly fearless when dragged by Kristatos through a sea of sharks with Bond in For Your Eyes Only. Even she resists Bond's sexual charms until the end of the movie.

Even notorious screamer Stacey Sutton in A View to a Kill is an expert geologist who helps Bond unravel the villain's dasterdly plot.

Etc., etc. To dismiss them as vacuous and compliant is just too, too easy and erroneous. As a young man, I dreamed of being as courageous, independent and skilled as these women were and sharing a great adventure with a sexy spy!

Its All Relative...

Sad thing about canceled shows is that they can never been found when it piques someone's interest. I'll just add it to my list of shows I tried to watch, but was unsuccessful in finding. If someone somewhere can find a link to the videos online, that would be superb!

I've seen It's All Relative on Logo

Logo has shown It's All Relative before, I've seen a Saturday morning mini-marathon not too long ago (not sure of the exact time frame.)  Something to keep an eye out for on there.  It was a good show, shame it didn't make it.

The Vintner's Luck

I'm still waiting impatiently for the release of The Vintner's Luck, as it stars not only Gaspard but my beloved Jérémie Renier as well. So far, the only pics I've found of the film come from a New Zealand Film promotion material from last year's Cannes Film Festival--unfortunately, no pics of Gaspard (since he's playing an angel, I suspect they're keeping his appearance under wraps for as long as possible); but you can see Jérémie on the cover, and on pages 6 and 7, pics of co-stars Keisha Castle-Hughes and Vera Farmiga and director Niki Caro. Charming, but low-key

Joseph, you may be interested to know (if you don't already!) that there are at least two near-ecstatic reviews of one of Jeremie's recent films, "Summer Hours," on the web today.  One is at the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com) and the other at www.salon.com.  Unfortunately for his fans, I have seen the film, and, while it is superb, it allows our boy very little screen time.  The good news is that he's part of an amazing ensemble cast that includes Juliette Binoche and Charles Berling.

Summer Hours

Are you kidding? Some of the reviews I have read look like love poems. The movie must be really good.

Among My Souvenirs

afhickman

Let me emphasize that I LOVE "Summer Hours."  But it is not for everyone.  It is an elegant meditation on the meaning of loss; if it has an analog it is probably Virginia Woolf's masterpiece, "To the Lighthouse," with bits of Forster's "Howard's End."  Only it's a lot more static.  It delights in small ways.  Most of the objets d'art are borrowed from museums (including an unusual panel by Odilon Redon), and the country house itself is a poignant reminder of the belle epoque and of a dilettantish lifestyle that is all but impossible today.  This is a perfect rental.  Savor it at home.

back to the book

Since there's minimal information out there about the film, I'm re-reading the novel this week.

Hopefully it will debut at Venice or Toronto, but who knows.

love reading the monkey every week!

as for the underwear, they look remarkably like a pair i bought at h&m about a year ago. light grey boxer briefs with cloth over the waistband, but they were in some weird specialty bin, so i'm pretty sure they're not being made anymore. which is unfortunate, because they're actually the most comfortable pair of underpants i own. all of their boxer briefs are comfy though. and very cute. recommended.

Pairings

I think straigh/gay pairings are quite common. I think it's more uncommon the gay/gay ones, probably because there are a lot less gay actors and a good percentage of them are not publicly out. I remember the Justin/Ethan couple on queer as folk, both actors are out.

It's quite common too, the couples which one of the actors is straight and the other is secretive about his private life or rumored to be gay but not confirmed

"Perks of Being a Wallflower" AND "Geography Club" movies

Quote:
Oh, I guess there is one more thing he and I have in common: we’ve both written screenplays for film adaptations of our novels that will hopefully get made very soon.
I hope those films get made (and made well).

Jamie's picture

Agreed

Geography Club was a great book, I would hope the film adaptation would be done well.  It sucks when a book you love gets turned into a crap movie.

I've not yet read Perks..., but it's on my "pending" shelf.  I'll get to it someday...

Brent Hartinger's picture

I'm cautiously optimistic :-)

But ultimately how "good" it is won't have much to do with me, even if they do use my screenplay. It's all about the producer and director...

After Zac

afhickman

If I were James Bond, and I were tempted to try out a Bond boy, I might take my cue from the AE Hot 100. Passing over the sentimental favorites, I'd be much more likely to go with Luke, or Jake, or Cheyenne, or Jensen, or Chris, and I'd probably even be willing to risk a stint in high school prison and "nuzzle" up to Zac Efron. But, given the present Bond's penchant for Gallic beauties (think Vesper), I might abandon the AE list altogether and look to France for inspiration: a Gaspard Ulliel or Gregoire LePrince-Ringuet, par exemple, or even Jeremie Renier, who is actually Belgian), all of whom were criminally overlooked by AE voters. Il y a toujours l'année prochaine!  Or words to that effect.

Bond Boys should be international

The Bond Girls hail from all over the place: Switzerland, Sweden, France, Russia, Japan, etc. So, too should the Bond Boys. A different Belgian actor could make for a wonderful Bond Boy: Nicolas Gob, who's demonstrated in Les Bleus that he can be buff, gruff and handle a gun, and turn on the heat with another man!

We musn't forget Louis Garrel! In fact there are whole host of Gallic and European hotties that get overlooked. Tant pis.

The Vintner's Luck

Thankyou for the info on the Vintner's Luck, Brent! I am so excited for the movie (its one of my favourite novels). Gaspard Ulliel is amazing, although as for Jeremie Renier, I have only seen him in the minute he was in Atonement for. Heres hoping the film will do well on the festival circuit when it is eventually released.

Jérémie Renier

Get thee to a Blockbuster or Netflix and rent the following films starring Monsieur Renier:

La Promesse (1996); his film début, at the age of 15, and an utterly brilliant performance as a young boy torn between his love for his father and a promise made to an illegal immigrant; directed by the Dardennes Brothers.

Criminal Lovers (2000); early François Ozon film, in which Renier and Natasha Régnier are lost in the woods, captured by a hulking hermit, who proceeds to turn the tables on sexual desire.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001); enjoyable gothic horror film, set during the Ancien Régime; Renier has a supporting role as a nobleman helping battle a mysterious monster.

L'Enfant (2005); reuniting with the Dardennes, Renier plays a callous youth who spontaneously sells his infant child, then regrets it.

A Love to Hide (2005); made for French TV, a powerful if melodramatic tale of a gay couple (Renier, Bruno Todeschini, that's them kissing in my avatar) who take in a Jewish girl during the Nazi occupation of France.

Private Property (2006); Renier and his real-life brother, Yannick, play fraternal twins whose relationship with their mother (the legendary Isabelle Huppert) falls apart when she threatens to sell their country house.

In Bruges (2008); Renier shows off his comic abilities in this marvelously dark comedy-drama; he's supporting, with the main roles brilliantly played by Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes.

And as Afhickman mentioned above, Renier has a new film out in theaters, Summer Hours, co-starring Juliette Binoche and Charles Berling, as well as another Dardennes project soon to hit US screens, Lorna's Secret.

For my money, Jérémie Renier is the best actor of his generation, period.

I'm not saying AfterElton

I'm not saying AfterElton should out people, but whenever I read the "unfortunately, he's straight" thing when no one actually asked about the celeb's sexual orientation, it seems like you're asking for the guy's apologies for citing him on a gay site.

And Channing Tatum and Ryan Reynolds would make PERFECT Bond boys. *drooling*

Brent Hartinger's picture

I'm not sure I understand your point

But for the record, the questioner did ask about the actor's personal life in his question -- that part was edited out (by me) for brevity.
