Ask the Flying Monkey! (June 03, 2008)

Q: Last week you mentioned John Lennon. I have this memory of him posing nude. True? Did any of the other Beatles ever pose nude? – Jon, Rapid City, SD

A: Lennon caused a huge stir by posing naked on the cover of Two Virgins, an experimental album he did with Yoko Ono in 1968 (cleverly, the front of the jacket shows him and Yoko nude from the front, while the back shows them naked from behind).

Interesting, long before she was famous, actress Sissy Spacek recorded a protest song regarding the “shocking” album cover, “John, You’ve Gone Too Far This Time.”

John had a penchant for doing controversial things: in 1966, he masterminded the original album cover for Yesterday and Today, which showed the Beatles covered in doll parts and butchered meat; a few months later, he created another controversy by saying that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.

As for the other Beatles, there is no actual nudity, but there is a film clip that exists of them all stripping down to their tighty-whities in a dressing room. The Monkey was certain it was from Magical Mystery Tour, but apparently he was wrong (so this is what it feels like!). Anyone know where it’s really from?

Q: I was wondering why any person in a same-sex relationship on television appears to jump immediately from being straight to gay...what about bisexual? I can understand with As the World Turns' “Nuke” storyline, since Noah appeared to have feelings for Luke fairly early on and appeared to be dating Maddie to simply please his father. However, the “Ollian” storyline on Verbotene Liebe has had Christian go from being in a serious heterosexual relationship one minute with Coco to suddenly being gay the next. This relationship was taking place even before Olli arrived, so why isn't he bisexual for falling out of love with Coco and in love with Olli? – Andrew, Vancouver, Canada

Christian (left) & Olli from Forbidden Love

A: You’re very perceptive! The Monkey thinks the reason is twofold: simple-mindedness and politics. In our dualistic western culture, people think in black and white: gay or straight. Bisexuality, like transexuality or multi-culturalism, has always been difficult for some people to wrap their minds around.

But the Monkey thinks another part of what’s going on here is politics. One of the hoariest and most insidious stereotypes about homosexuality is that it’s a “choice” (and because it’s a “choice,” we’re therefore not deserving of legal protections). As a result, many writers have been reluctant to delve into bisexuality, for fear that ignorant readers will latch onto the storylines as confirmation that their prejudices are true (obviously bisexuals can’t “change” their orientation—their sexual orientation is just as established as a gay person’s—but that nuance can be lost in a storyline that has a character shifting from a same-sex partner to an opposite-sex one).

But times have changed. The Monkey thinks we’re long overdue for authentic, well-written bisexual characters, and that viewers, especially younger ones, would really embrace them.

Q: Two gorgeous, tragic French gay films: at the end of one, two teenagers commit suicide on a motorscooter (I think one of them is already dead?); the other is about an escaped French mental patient and a German soldier. Ring any bells? -- Bud, San Diego CA USA

A: You’re not giving the Monkey much to go on. Then again, since the Monkey knows all (yet isn’t a know-it-all), he doesn’t need much to go on!

The first movie may be Presque Rien, or Come Undone (France, 2000), a depressing, but effective little film with hot sex scenes and lots of motorscootering about (though it’s attempted suicide in the movie, not an actual one). The second movie is definitely Nous étions un seul homme, or We Were One Man (France, 1978).

Is the Monkey good or what?

About the bi's

I believe both Olli und Christian are bi, because Olli was with Coco, but didn't love her, this was extra confusing because he didn't like guys before. As for Christian, he has been explicitly bi, he kissed Coco (and gave her the "shades of grey" speech, too) , which is what started the whole story line. All the bi characters on English TV (outside of Torchwood) are psychopaths, or sexoholics, the only one who appears slightly normal is Kris from Hollyoaks, who is bi, but also happens to be a cross dresser. But there are some good ones, Ianto has had relationships with both sexes, Christian caused massive confusion before the Ollian storyline by kissing Coco, of course Capt. Jack, and finally Kris from Hollyoaks, who is awesome, in my humble opinion.

Olli has always been

Olli has always been bisexual. When he joined the show for the first time in 2001 it was sort of the "hook" of his character that he was bisexual, mostly because it was a major bone of contention between him and his gay boyfriend Tom. With Tom being extremely jealous of Olli interacting and flirting with girls and Olli had to defend his bisexuality to Tom a lot.

There's even an old interview from that time floating around of Jo Weil with eurogay where they talk a bit about the prejudices against bisexuality and about being a rolemodel etc. That said no matter how much time Olli spent explaining and defending bisexuality, it seems that he seems to suffer from spontaneous amnesia in regards to the difference between gay and bi every once in a while and not just since he returned.

There are explanations once might come up with, such as it potentially being a bigger step for people to accept and deal with the concept of "gay" so you might as well acquaint yourself with it (like when Olli accused Christian of having issues with gay people or when they talk about tellling Gregor the truth), but really I think it's mostly the writers using the terms rather lazily.

Also, theories go in the direction of Olli enjoying sex with women, but he seems to prefer men when it comes to who he falls in love with, because he has never had a major romance with a female on the show nor has one been refered to.

You're confusing Christian with Olli...

Christian is the character who is the sports student and boxer and who was with Coco for a period of time as a couple. Olli is the one who kissed Coco one time and whose cousin is Olivia. Olli returned from working on a cruise ship. The same character (and actor) was previously on Forbidden Love several years ago in another gay relationship.

Christian and Oliver and bisexuality

R.J. is correct that Sean has Christian and Oliver reversed in his description.

As for Christian suddenly "turning gay", it's not so sudden as you might think.  There were plenty of subtle signs that Christian was interested in Oliver while still with Coco.  The approach with Christian has been more one of portraying him as falling for Oliver specifically, than one of saying he's now gay.  "Coming out" and not hiding it where Christian is concerned should be viewed from the context of his relationship with Oliver, not so much about his orientation more generally.

Oliver, while always bisexual, has also seemingly always been more focused on men.

Speaking of Hollyoaks

Speaking of Hollyoaks, there's a lot of evidence that seems to suggest that Craig was bisexual. That's probably where a lot of his problems came from - in his head, he wasn't gay, because he really did love Sarah, and yet he fell in love with another bloke.

David Cook on BWE

I'm not sure that asking a woman out on a date publicly constitutes proof of anything. However, Cook seems like a pretty genuine guy from what I've seen and read about him in interviews.

A few days ago, David Cook appeared in an instalment of VH1's Best Week Ever. In one scene, he is being interviewed about how he achieved his American Idol hair styles. I found the segment pretty funny though it could be argued that the skit promoted a certain gay stereotype.

Hotest Duo

Brent, I think I have to agree with you, the Winchester boys probably are the hotest TV duo I've ever seen! I think they need more shirtless scens in that show...it could only help the ratings! 8) I've been putting off watching that Christian & Olli show for a bit now...I should watch that and get all caught up so I know just what everyone's talking about..

I'm not surprised that

I'm not surprised that there are no current plans to continue the Tales Of The City movies. The last miniseries strayed so far from the book it was based on that it made it hard to continue without furthering the continuity issues.

I'm just glad Maupin's continuing the book series. Michael Tolliver Lives was an absolute delight.

The hottest TV duo since Moose and Squirrel!

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

The Wincest boys win it, hands down. I'd have to travel way back, in the Wayback machine, to come up with anything remotely comparable, and I don't mean Rocky and Bullwinkle! Another great TV duo, better even than Batman and Robin, were Ben Murphy and Pete Duel, of "Alias Smith and Jones." If Pete Duel had lived, Hannibal Hayes and Kid Curry might have beat Jack and Ennis into the tent! Also, congratulations, Brent, on your award! Here's a link to some great pix of Ben and Pete, for those of you who don't remember: www.framecaplib.com/asjlib.htm

tragic French movies

Damn! You're GOOD! (chuckle). "We Were One Man," definitely. I think the other one would have been from around the same time (the 60s or 70s), 'cause I remember seeing "Flesh" and "Trash" at the same "art movie house" in Cleveland OH (!), and I taught school there 1963-1976. THANKS! Cheers, Bud in San Diego

Michael Tolliver

I'm disappointed that Armistead Maupin has "officially" decided that "Michael Tolliver Lives" is now a part of the Tales of the City series. I have always loved Tales of the City, and feel it was important to my development as a gay man and a writer. When I started reading "Michael Tolliver Lives" it felt like my memories and connection to "Mouse" were being pissed upon and dismantled by somebody who clearly needed an antidepressant. I have almost unlimited respect for Maupin, but I had to put that cynical, repellent book down and try to erase it from my memory. I'm not sure what his motivation was, but I'll retain my love and inspiration for the series as-was, and stay in serious denial about this lousy thing.

The James Dean Quote

Originally came from Ghandi "Live like you will die tomorrow, and learn like you will live forever." It has been corrupted over the years and attributed to Dean far too often because of a poster. Were that Dean had been that verbal.

My Dad used to say...

...sometimes it doesn't matter if something is true if it SEEMS true. Basically, we all need our "stories," and all of life is an illusion anyway (my dad could be quite the philosopher!) But that's interesting about the Ghandi quote--thanks for chiming in! Read my books! Explore "Brent's Brain" at http://www.brenthartinger.com

Super obsessive Beatles fan here! *waves*

Not to be a pain but John Lennon didn't come up with the concept for the cover of Yesterday...and Today. Credit for that actually goes to Australian photographer Bob Whitaker. He had a lot of crazy ideas for the photo shoot and the Beatles pretty much went along with it. Otherwise, awesome job Flying Monkey!
Brent Hartinger's picture

Well, yes...

He came up with the concept and took the photos, but they were strictly an "artistic" project. It was John's decision (or so I've read) to use that particularly photo as an album cover--ergo, the controversy. Incidentally, what is your favorite album? Song? Beatle?!? Read my books! According to 'The Beatles'

by Bob Spitz (awesome book, have you read it? Best Beatles book out there, and trust me, I've read them all) the photo was a group choice as a protest against the Vietnam War, but whatever - always nice to talk to another Beatles fan. It just irks me when John always gets the 'badass' title - can you tell that Paul is my favorite?:) As for favorite album/song, I equate that with people picking a favorite child - it's just too hard. I love them all! Even 'The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill." :)

Hottest Current Duo?

My avatar gives away my loyalties. The Winchester brothers are fine, but they've got nothing on Nathan and Peter Petrelli. Whether shooting a scene for Heroes,

or hanging out together off the set,

Adrian Pasdar and Milo Ventimiglia seem to have great difficulty keeping their hands off of each other.

Or, at times, keeping their lips off of each other.

And they're not alone on Heroes - Sendhil Ramamurthy and Zachary Quinto (Mohinder and Sylar) have been known to crank up the heat while working together, especially during this "torture" scene:

A look of breathless anticipation would be my reaction as well, if I had Sendhil Ramamurthy right behind me, whispering "This is going to hurt" into my ear.

John Russell of Finland?John Russell of Finland?Guys playing with boots and saddles seems to be the most common of the male TV couple genres, with so many similar shows over the years that picking just one set would miss the fun that there have been enough for everyone’s preferences. A personal favorite is The Lawman (1958-1962 ABC TV series) staring John Russell as Marshal Dan Troop and his badge buddy Peter Brown as Deputy Johnny McKay. I always thought the similarity between John Russell dressed as Troop and Tom of Finland’s was an interesting coincidence.
